Casey and I decided to go out to dinner last night, and I brought some tea samples with me. (Maybe some will think I am incredibly rude. I only do this at more casual restaurants, and I insist upon paying for the hot water as if they were serving me their tea, and if they don’t charge me, I make up for it in the servers tip. So I’m comfortable enough doing this, although I probably seem like a crazy person, which, well, is accurate.)

I was not expecting to like this at all. Harney & Sons teas are very hit and miss with me. This was really good, however. I also really liked the sachet was translucent enough that you almost couldn’t tell that it was there. It’s always a nice visual treat to watch pearl tea unfurl. I could see making this a staple jasmine tea in my cupboard.

I picked this one up when Yunnan Sourcing was having a sale, I believe it was in December, but hadn’t tried it until tonight. So, so, so good. It tasted like Cheerios and chocolate, both in the best ways imaginable. I’m glad I finally tried this tea. It will be difficult not to drink it up fast!

(While searching for when the sale was, I noticed that Yunnan Sourcing sells tea via Amazon??? Has anyone here ever purchased tea from them that way?)

My Butiki order came in the mail today, and I think I’m going to be the first one to review this! I was worried when I first smelled the dry leaf that the lemon would be overpowering. It smelled very much like those amazing frozen lemonades I used to get sometimes as a kid in the summer which were flavored with nothing but perfect fresh lemons and sugar. Anyway, brewed the macaron is much more apparent. I can smell the almonds, cream, and even though I did not add any sugar to this it tastes perfectly sweet. This is a wonderful new tea and I hope Stacy keeps it around!

The flavors are a little more subtle in this tea, and maybe my palate is just not sensitive enough, but it just doesn’t have as much going on as far as I can smell and taste when compared to Butiki’s other black teas. However, this is still very good and would still be something I might reorder.

I purchased this tea a few weeks ago. I had added it to my order to get free shipping. It has a pretty good rating on steepster and sounded good. I had opened the bag shortly after it arrived, smelled the dry leaf, and knew it was not for me. The dry leaf smells like a pina colada air freshener and movie theater “butter”. Maybe I’m exaggerating, but only a little. The brewed tea is only slightly better. I took only one sip of this. I am relieved to have rehomed this tea today to someone who appreciates it.

This sample was sent to me in a swap by the generous boychik. Thank you!!!

This is very good. It’s a perfect afternoon tea. (I made the mistake of drinking it with/after a big breakfast, which it wasn’t really assertive enough for.) It tasted a bit like berries and vanilla, but after reading boychik’s review I recognized that there was black currant. It is very mellow and smooth. It doesn’t have the over-the-top candy-like black currant flavoring of their tea of that name.

Yum. Now this is more like it. This tea smells like bread, honey, flowers, and fruit to me. The tea liquor has some nice body to it without being tannic or drying (I’m looking at you Thé Blanc Sacré). It has a beautiful creamy mouthfeel. This is definitely something I would restock.

This is my first attempt at brewing this tea, and I followed Mariage Frères’ instructions. Honestly, this tea isn’t really impressive to me. It brewed to a pretty dark color for a white tea, and was proportionately heavy in taste- more body than I think I’ve ever experienced in a white tea. It was also not very aromatic. It was surprisingly woody, earthy, and only a little bit floral and fruity. I had a fleeting moment while sipping this tea where I had a very pleasant aftertaste linger in my mouth, but it disappeared as quickly as I became aware of it.

I will try different parameters next time. Even if it doesn’t improve, at least it came in a cute canister, and now I know I don’t need to be regularly spending too much money on this tea.

This was another tea I bough for Allie yesterday. I really liked it. I missed the puerh flavor in this, though. It might be a good gateway drug for anyone new to puerh. :-)

Here’s another tea I bought for Allie, and tried at her house yesterday. I thought this was a nice enough tea, and the flavors came together well, but the flavoring is a bit too much for me. This was just a little too artificial for me, especially because many of the flavors in this can be found naturally in other teas.

I did not like this at all, eww

Tea means so many things to me, it is so deep and it is revealing new meaning to me all the time.

Tea is a mindfulness practice, and a doorway through which to explore different philosophies, cultures, and historical times. Tea is hospitality and a way of communion. Tea is an art, a ritual, and a tradition. Tea is a complement to the foods I eat (preferably vegan desserts) and is something I enjoy collecting and curating.

I love to swap, or even just send people samples, so if there’s anything in my cupboard you’d like to try, just send me a message!
