drank Lychee Oolong by Seven Teahouse
4161 tasting notes

Still making my way through these fruity tea samples from Seven.

This one is really excellent, definitely the best lychee flavoring I’ve had. It feels much more dimensional than other versions I’ve had. Generally lychee flavor tends to be all top notes if that makes sense, light and floral and sweet. But this has more depth, a deeper honey-like flavor to it.

Anyway, it’s scrumptious, and of course it goes perfectly with the somewhat floral oolong. Not too floral for me, thankfully, and it has more of a refreshing mineral flavor than a creamy one. Definitely on the list to reorder. :)

Flavors: Dried Fruit, Floral, Fresh, Fruity, Green, Honey, Juicy, Lychee, Mineral, Nectar, Smooth, Spring Water, Sweet

Preparation
190 °F / 87 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

This came out a teeny bit watery, I waffled on the amount of water to use and probably should have gone with 12 ounces instead of 14.

The strawberry here is reminding me of something, not sure if it’s another tea or what. It is quite candylike and a bit tangy, but also a touch floral/perfumey. Can’t quite place it, but I’m thinking maybe it’s those hard candies with the strawberry-printed cellophane wrapper.

It’s nice enough, though the base itself is a bit weak (my own fault). Still has those nice savory notes that I associate with Fujian black teas, plus a touch of the trademark caraway. Would be nice to see more quality Chinese teas being used as a base for flavored teas, they have so much more character than the usual suspects.

Flavors: Artificial, Bread, Candy, Caraway, Floral, Malty, Savory, Smooth, Strawberry, Sweet, Tangy

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 14 OZ / 414 ML

More fruity teas from Seven Teahouse!

For me, it’s hard to go wrong with what I would consider a Japanese-style grape flavor. Here, the tea is Chinese though, so maybe they’re fans of it too ha ha. Here it’s paired with a light yet flavorful shou mei base, which isn’t a combo I’ve had before. It’s lovely though, sweet and juicy on a soft and haylike, slightly woody base. Definitely a dark purple Kyoho-esque grape here, with a nice depth of flavor.

I have one other sachet of this flavor, and I think I’ll have to try it iced!

Flavors: Autumn Leaf Pile, Candy, Crisp, Grapes, Hay, Jam, Juicy, Light, Smooth, Sweet

Preparation
185 °F / 85 °C 2 min, 0 sec 16 OZ / 473 ML

I wonder if this could be the same one I had not long ago from Tin Roof Teas? It was delish!

I think Seven does all of their own teas, but I could be mistaken. I have seen other grape white teas though, like the icewine kind!

Sipdown! (2 | 121)

Finished this one off with sugar and oat milk. I don’t know whether they’ve changed the formula for this tea or what, but I was shocked to see multiple reviews calling the maple subtle? To me, it’s very strong and buttery-tasting, like maple leaf sandwich cookies. With the oat milk, it’s a decadent fall treat.

Probably not one I would reorder, just because I don’t tend to reach for desserty teas at this point. Plus they have other maple teas that I like better.

Flavors: Artificial, Butter, Cookie, Creamy, Maple, Pancake Syrup, Sweet

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 2 min, 0 sec 16 OZ / 473 ML

Really enjoyed this one, even though it seemed like a weird combo at first. But the butterscotch and the lemongrass really do go together well, like some kind of lemon and butterscotch pudding mashup ha ha. The lemongrass also lightens the body up a bit, which makes it more refreshing and suited for summer. Probably wouldn’t order it just because I have Bourbon Brew and I have lemongrass, so could easily mix them myself. But enjoyed sipping through the small tin!

Also, good timing on the sipdown since this was my last tea from the summer box, and the fall box should be shipping any day now! :P

Flavors: Butter, Butterscotch, Caramel, Citrus, Creamy, Custard, Lemon, Lemongrass, Rich, Rooibos, Smooth, Sweet, Woody

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

I liked this one too, but I like the bourbon brew by itself better.

They’re two different vibes for me, I can see this one being ideal for summer since it’s a bit lighter. But agree, Bourbon Brew is tasty!

Sipdown! (13 | 119)

Counting this one for August, as I made the pitcher last night.

Sipped through this as an iced tea, though I did enjoy it warm as well. It’s just so hot here in Austin, and the mint is so nice and refreshing cold. This has a nice balance of sweet spearmint with black and oolong teas. I don’t notice the lemon at all cold, but I don’t miss it. I added a little bit of raw sugar, but probably doesn’t need any sweetener at all with the sweetness of the spearmint.

Not sure whether I would reorder it, as I would probably prefer a green or white tea with spearmint to a black one. But still so nice to have for the summer, so grateful for it being in the June box.

Flavors: Fresh, Mint, Smooth, Spearmint, Sweet, Woody

Preparation
Iced 3 min, 0 sec 8 tsp 34 OZ / 1000 ML

I didn’t get any lemongrass from this one either.

Cameron B.

I remember tasting a tiny bit when I had it warm, but definitely not iced.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Murchie’s definitely seems to excel at black-green blends, which is something I’ve never really liked in the past. This one has a soft smokiness from the Lapsang, which I don’t generally reach for, but here the citrus and jasmine help to smooth it out and brighten it up a bit.

Very nice everyday mindless sipping sort of tea. When I get around to reordering from Murchie’s, I might have a difficult time deciding which black-green blends to get. I think this one is quite similar to the No. 10, which I also enjoyed. But this has the addition of the lapsang and apparently Darjeeling. Will be interesting to see how the loose leaf compares as well, since all the ones I’ve tried have been in teabag form.

Flavors: Acidic, Bergamot, Bright, Citrus, Dry Leaves, Earthy, Jasmine, Metallic, Mineral, Savory, Smoked, Smooth, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 16 OZ / 473 ML

I don’t remember whether I chose this one or they included it as a freebie, but it’s quite nice. I like the Fujian black as a base, it has that nice chew and savoriness to it that contrasts well with the blueberry jam-esque flavoring. There’s something slightly candylike to it as well, a tangy note that reminds me of blue raspberry (my husband’s favorite).

I don’t know that I would go out of my way to buy it, just because I don’t see myself craving a blueberry tea. Plus, I already have a blueberry green in S&V’s Acadia, so I certainly don’t need two. But definitely wouldn’t turn down a cup!

Flavors: Blue Raspberry, Blueberry, Candy, Earthy, Jam, Malty, Savory, Smooth, Sweet, Syrupy, Tangy

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 14 OZ / 414 ML

drank Peach Oolong by Seven Teahouse
4161 tasting notes

Another fruity tea from Seven!

I agree with Kelly on this one, it does taste a bit yogurt-y. It reminds me of a peach yogurt smoothie, or maybe Calpico. It’s nice though, with a sweet white peach sort of flavor on a silky oolong base. I steeped this one just slightly less than last time, and I think it helped cut down on the floral notes from the oolong a bit.

Enjoyed the cup, though not sure I would order this one as peach just isn’t a favorite flavor of mine.

Flavors: Creamy, Fruity, Green, Juicy, Mineral, Peach, Silky, Smooth, Spring Water, Sweet, Yogurt

Preparation
190 °F / 87 °C 2 min, 30 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Next up from Seven! They actually sent me an extra sachet of this one, in addition to the two I got in the white tea sampler. Yay bonus tea! I sent one out in a swap, since I had enough to share. <3

This is just lovely. I like orange and citrus things in general, though often orange-flavored things can be quite sweet and candylike. This is not. It has a very natural orange flavor to it, a nice balance of sweet and tangy. It reminds me of eating a clementine or something similar, and goes so well with the honeyed hay notes of the light white base.

I might try icing the other sachet, as it seems like it would be great cold too. Either way, this seems like a repurchase sort of tea to me… Their sachets seem expensive, but they have a lot of tea inside. I only need one for my 16-ounce mug.

Flavors: Citrus, Dry Leaves, Hay, Honey, Juicy, Orange, Orange Zest, Smooth, Sweet, Tangy, Woody

Preparation
185 °F / 85 °C 2 min, 0 sec 16 OZ / 473 ML

Hi, I’m Cameron!

I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, Korean skincare, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

~ 2024 SIPDOWN CHALLENGE! ~
- November sipdowns: 13
- Total 2024 sipdowns: 156

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

I tend to reach for fruitier flavors rather than desserty ones these days, but I do have favorites from both categories. Willing to try anything once! There are a few ingredients/flavors that aren’t generally my jam, such as coconut, rose, lavender, and chocolate flavoring. But I also have teas that I love with some of those things, too! :)

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
