drank Passion Berry by Teavana

I wish Teavana hadn’t discontinued this one. It’s got lots of berry flavour and it’s tart, but it’s the good kind of tart that has a lemony note to it, instead of the blah sour water hibiscus tart that I find in so many fruit tisanes and generally dislike. There’s also a very nice cinnamon note that comes out.

I’m almost out and I’ll be sad when I hit the bottom of the bag.

Drank this in the rain, in the woods. Tasty as always, even with lake water. I definitely needed a hot cup of tea.

This was my morning opener after a wet night in the woods in a hammock. Boiled lake water and powdered milk was not the kindest to this tea but it was super satisfying none the less.

Oh this was such a lovely way to end off a day of fishing. Even lake water didn’t take anything away from this beautiful tea.

Mm delicious as always. No milk this time, since I’m out, but it still tastes nice and creamy and I’m not missing the milk.

This was the perfect way to start a ridiculous, stressful day. Sometimes you just want a reliable, familiar standby, and this is it. Very bold.

drank Orange Oolong by Bulk Barn

I used to drink this tea all the time and then I got distracted by all kinds of other lovely tastes. I’ve had this tea sitting in a not very air tight bag for quite a long time, so I think it may have lost some of its complexity, but even still, it’s lovely.

Earthy, nutty, a bit vegetal, and fresh, distinct orange notes, that give it a tiny bit of tang without it being tart at all. Not at all bitter or astringent.

I missed you old friend. I’m glad we’re back.

drank Maple Bacon by Man Teas

Oh wow, I’m surprised by how good this is. The black tea is the dominant flavour, but there’s distinctive smokey, sweet bacon flavours there.

I tried it straight and it was good. I added half a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt and it’s even better.

Thank you Dexter, for this sample!

drank Masala Chai by Cornelia Bean

Well. I bought this chai thinking I would be trying something new, but then I looked in my cupboard on Steepster and there it was. Then I looked in my physical cupboard and couldn’t find it. Eventually I found an empty bag tucked in the corner, so I guess I must have liked it before, and I like it this time around too.

Of all the masala chais I have right now, I think this one is my favourite. It’s heavy on the fennel, cardamom and coriander, and it’s a bit peppery, which are some of my favourite notes for this type of tea. The dry leaf smells strong, complex and spicy, and while I think I catch a hint of cinnamon, it’s not a dominant fragrance or flavour.

This one is also very pretty. In amongst the CTC tea fannings there’s a lot of orange peel, fennel seed, coriander seed and broken green cardamom pods. A little sparser is cinnamon bark pieces, whole clove, broken star anise and ginger. I don’t actually see any peppercorns, but they’re definitely there in the flavour.

I drank this with milk and quite a lot of sugar. I steeped it for 7 minutes, at which point it was quite strong and definitely had some bitterness and astringency which needed mellowing out. I used more sugar than I usually do to soften the bitterness, but it didn’t end up overly sweet tasting.

Yum!

Profile

Bio

I grew up drinking jasmine green tea with meals, but really fell in love with tea on a trip to Britain in elementary school. My first great love was Earl Grey, and I still adore it and all its variants.

I discovered the beauty of loose leaf tea much later, when, on impulse, I picked up a few teas that were on clearance at a home store. My introduction to loose leaf teas were Masala Chai and Provence Rooibos by the Metropolitan Tea Co and an unknown brand of kukicha and gyokuro (little did I know what a precious treasure I’d stumbled onto with that.)

At the time I was lucky to live in a place with multiple tea shops and several places to have afternoon tea, which is a delight I still miss.

Tea is part of my daily ritual and a nice, affordable way to appease the collector in me.

I enjoy distinctive whites, greens and oolongs, flavoured blacks, and herbals that are heavy on the citrus, lavender or mint.

Rating rubric, to give myself some consistency:
0-15 Yuck, not even drinkable.
16-30 Disappointing, not really inclined to give it a second try.
31-45 Disappointing, but maybe there’s potential? Worth one more try, prepped differently.
46-60 Mediocre, not terrible but not memorable.
61-75 Not bad. I’ll definitely finish what I have and might buy again.
76-90 Very enjoyable. Tasty, complex, it’ll keep me coming back.
91-100 BEST! I love everything about it and I will drink it forever.

Beyond tea, I’m a sex educator, polyamory activist, and radical queer. I love backwoods camping, abstract painting, baking & cooking, nail polish, cats, ceramic sculpture, and home nesting.
