I used more than the recommended amount this time for steeping and it’s loads more flavorful. It’s still not perfect and I might not be getting all of the flavors due to my cold. Or it might just be that me + rooibos are not friends.

The first steep was light and ‘barely there’. On the second steep the flavor woke up, and I am enjoying it. It has a light scent of apricot and cut grass. It’s very mild with little bitterness. Still learning to taste.

Having ordered a selection of young sheng to educate my palette, I’m finding the elements I enjoy in a pu-erh changing rapidly and drastically.

The third steep turned out nastily bitter because I accidentally over steeped. The forth turned out pleasant light and sweet with little bitterness.

Gongfu style: 20s rinse, 20s first steep, 15s second, ~20+ third, ~15 forth…

I’ve been drinking this throughout the weekend. Still a fabulous tea, and great for the first three steepings. The flavour really starts to taper off on the fourth steeping. I could probably coax a few more brews out of it given time and testing to get the right steeping time for each successive brew – but it’s easier just to get some fresh leaves!

I really wanted to love. I love mint, chocolate, and herbal tea. However, this just tasted off to me. I’m not sure if it was the steep time, sugar content, or what. I was gifted a whole tube of loose leaf tea, and I will probably keep trying to modify preparation because it is a great idea in theory to tame late night chocolate cravings.
