Hello everyone! I’m new here. My fiance has been very into tea for quite some time and is very active on this site (among others). I’m hoping I can become as interested as him. Before I can do that though, I need to work on refining my tastebuds, because right now all teas taste the same to me and I can’t tell the difference in quality or flavor.. I think this is why I have struggled up to this point. Does anyone have any suggestions? He and I are currently drinking 4 seasons oolong from IDEStea, and he says it tastes sweet with a floral hint, where as I just think it tastes like tea and have no clue where he is getting sweet or floral from.. It’s good though.
It takes a while to develop a palette for tea so you can pick off specific notes in tea. Just takes time and a lot of tea drinking. I still don’t always get the notes that others get from a particular tea. It is very subjective.

After a fashion there is a trick to it. Drink quality teas. Bad tea you won’t get the notes from because they won’t generally have complex notes. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on tea though. One of my favorite vendors for quality teas is Simpson and Vail. They have quality tea at a reasonable price. Their website is www.svtea.com. You can get better tea but not really better value. If you really want the very best try Whispering Pines. You will pay a lot more than Simpson and Vail but the quality is only somewhat higher, not dramatically higher.
Appreciate it! I seem to like the milk oolongs the best because they seem creamy to me.
Pretty much all your high stuff will be that way whether it’s Jin Xuan, milk oolong, or a fine Shan Lin Xi. I advise buying Red Buffalo when it’s in stock at What Cha, it’s a darker and creamy oolong
