Egyptian Licorice

And here it is, Sipdown No. 100!
I’ve enjoyed Licorice teas for about 30 years, & I still do. Licorice root has blood sugar balancing qualities, & I love the sweet aftertaste.
And with that, little terri’s Sipdown Extravaganza! draws to a close, ending with 330 teas.

I tend to get a bit of a dry cough at night time and this helps soothe my itchy throat sometimes. I was somewhat surprised to find only two tea bags left when I went rooting through the tea cupboard looking for this. Not bad for a tea I initially didn’t care for. ;)

I’ve been reading a lot about the health benefits of pau d’arco and want to try drinking more of it this winter in the hopes it will perk up my immune system. Unfortunately the taste of it is enough to make me gag, so I keep trying to find things to mix it with. Tonight I tried this spicy licorice tea with a bit of coconut oil. This is definitely a spicy concoction but I think I prefer the pau d’arco with plain licorice root which more effectively masks its flavor. If anyone has a good pau d’arco tea blend please let me know what it is. :)

I really hate licorice, but Kristin sent me a bag of this, so I sucked it up and tried it. It reminds me of the tea they give out free samples of in Aveda stores and sell loose. I actually used to enjoy that tea. I DO feel like the licorice is fairly strong in this, with an herby, peppery undertone to it. The taste of this could certainly be relaxing for a lot of people, so if you like chais (although this doesn’t taste like chai), or like anise, do try this. I feel like my dislike of it is really subjective. Oh, and this really really reminds me of one of Yogi Teas’ medicinal blends- perhaps throat coat? I can’t remember, but the taste is super familiar and has a strong cinnamon component. It’s one of the ones that I try to get through when I need it for health reasons.

This licorice tea is pretty great. The aroma is soft but the flavor is delicious. A sweet black licorice flavor with a very pleasant after taste. It’s very smooth and is a great relax time tea.

I recieved this one and 2 other from Yogi today, I decided to try this one first since it was the one i thought i wouldnt care for much, I was very wrong this tea is very good it does NOT taste like a black jellybean the way i thought it would, it tastes wonderful slightly spicy with more of a cinamon taste than a licorice taste, i will buy some of this.

Hubby had already raided the tea bags josiejade sent us and decided to try Tazo’s Passion tea. Not my speed, especially not hot, so I went for something different.

After looking at a couple of reviews here, I decided on this because many describe it as spicy and sweet… much like my favorite teabag from Good Earth teas (Original Sweet & Spicy). This was my first experience, to my knowledge, with licorice in tea. I have been one of few in my family to actually enjoy a black jellybean now and then, so the name didn’t scare me. I have to admit when I opened the bag I was a bit underwhelmed by the fragrance. It was earthy w/no spice. Upon steeping, I felt the same way. I expected a bit of a sweet scent with either licorice or cinnamon coming through.

First sip, mild flavor, not spicy… not like I had hoped or the name suggested. Hard to pick out any distinct flavors even after a few sips. Then I began to notice after I swallowed, a mild bit of spice in my mouth and the sweetness. The sweetness would linger for quite a long time. As it cooled, the flavors didn’t intensify or become distinct, but the sweetness did.

Not really sure how I rate this one yet, but glad to have tried it for the experience of the sweet aftertaste. Luckily there is one more teabag in the box so I can try it again. :)

The thing that stands out to me the most is the aftertaste, it’s unlike any other licorice tea I’ve tried! It’s so sweet, and the overall flavor is something I never get sick of.

There’s the licorice! It’s at the back of my throat as I swallow a modest sip (as opposed to gulping it down yesterday) and take time to taste it.

The scent is still cinnamon, with cardamom underneath. Tasting is sweet sweet sweet, with the licorice blooming on my tongue if I don’t rush it. I added a lot of half-and-half, which I think is drowning the pepper and ginger.

This is GOOD. Bumping up my rating even higher. I wonder whether I’ll find the orange peel next time?

This is one of those herbal teas I enjoy more for their properties than the taste. Don’t get me wrong; this one tastes good but it is not “the treat” I contemplate whilst sipping. This is my company to reading, working and just when feeling cold and needing something to warm me up.
The aroma of the tea seeps deep, strong and I need no to very little additional sweetener since the cardamon&liquorice combo has some very welcome natural sweetness and hint of heat. Tasty, simple and warming!
