First of all the name of this company weirds me out just a touch as it sounds more than just a little dirty – like you’re being molested in a dark room or something…. 0_o

It’s worth mentioning that bakeapple isn’t an apple at all but a type of wild berry related to a raspberry. I orginally thought that this was a loose-leaf tea, but when I got it I was disappointed to see that it’s actually a set of tea bags filled with fine tea dust (Boo!).

The taste started out lightly fruity and berry-like, but then WHAM the bitterness hits at the back of the mouth. I’m all for buying stuff from small, local companies but I wasn’t terribly impressed with this.

hmmm…I can’t say that I’m a fan of the company name either. shudders

teaplz

Woooow. That’s creeptastic, Jillian. I felt dirty even typing that into Google to do some research on them. Their website is so bright and cheery and web 1.0-esque! That make me even more suspicious…

takgoti

After asking myself why in the name of Zeus would you name your company that, I had to google, too. From their site:

“Our name. A ‘tickle’ is a narrow channel which in our case is dark because it is surrounded by high hills. It is also the area in Griquet where we are located and as represented by the picture in our labels.”

But still. If I decided to name my company “Rear Channel” because of where I was located, tell me you wouldn’t think of something else…

I guess it’s memorable, though. Probably not going to forget that one for a while.

Auggy

@takgoti: I’ll be doing my best to forget it, thanks.
;)

@Auggy You won’t be able to when I start making creepy comments on all of your tea posts. Daaaaaark tickle! Daaaaaaaark tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiickle!

Let me just start out by saying how refreshing it is to try an “apple” flavored tea WITHOUT cinnamon as an additive. Thank you! It’s nice! Spread the word to other tea companies.

This tea is a very mellow and smooth black tea with just a smidge of apple behind it. Apple is not the main focus, but it is harmoniously playing in the background. It’s there when you want it to be there. I’m also getting that bake-y taste.

The sample I received in my teaswap was in bagged form. For my 1st cup, I removed the bag after about 5 minutes. I tried to resteep, but ended up with faintly apple-flavored hot water. For my 3rd cup, I used another teabag and left it in until I finished my cup. No bitterness…just a little more apple…or bakeapple. YUM! I added just a faint sprinkling of Splenda and it was wonderful. I bet it would be lovely iced. It’s light and thirst-quenching.

Daaaaark Tickle! shivers

Edit: OK, so there’s no actual apple in this. WTF am I tasting?…the word apple? LOL! I’ll stand by it though. I tasted a dry/tart (Granny Smith apple) kind of taste.

Auggy

BAKE-Y!!! Whee!

LENA

oh you know it!

Jillian

Except…there’s no actual apple involved. Bakeapple is a type of wild berry related to the raspberry.

Did you get this from TeaEqualsBliss? I know I sent her a bunch awhile ago. :D

LENA

That’s freakin’ wild! Maybe it’s that dry/tart taste (kind of like a Granny Smith apple would taste)…or simply the power of perception. I really liked it though. Yep, TeaEqualsBliss hooked me up with 2 teabags. I’d love to try the bakeapple beer or liqueurs that Wikipedia talks about. MMM!

Ricky

Whattt bakey apple tea without the cinnamon!??! Count me in! Haha bakeapple aka cloudberry =] Ohhhh, it has a nice name to it.

Jillian

@LENA: Awesome isn’t it? Here’s a picture of bakeapple/cloudberry: http://www.berryscotland.com/cloudberry.jpg
And here’s the company’s website (if you dare): http://www.darktickle.com/
Although I didn’t actually buy the tea from them, but from a Canadian company that sells unique food items. I also bought a jar of their crowberry jam which I haven’t tried yet.

@Ricky: Stop trying to mooch more teas from me! Jeez! ;P

Ricky

LOL! What!?!? This is Lena’s post, so if anything I’m mooching from Lena. You know what! I’m just going to fly over to Canada and haul away your cupboard one evening while you’re not around =P

takgoti

Don’t forget apple sencha for apple sans cinnamon tea! You sent that to me! Though, that wasn’t very bake-y. I do like bake-y. Hehe.

Another Jillian Tea…YAY! YAY! LOVE the name of this company! Altho…and you are going to laugh…when I first looked at it I thought it said Dork Tickle! LOL – either way …LOVE it!

As for the tea it doesn’t have much smell or flavoring in the actual tea taste. It’s not bad but it’s not very strong and I over steeped. The reddish black tea color was cool – I would try this again because it wasn’t bad just not very strong…

Jillian

This is one tea that’s REALLY improved with some milk added to it, IMO. And ‘Dork Tickle’ sounds less dirty than the correct version of the name, lol. XD
