From Teavivre

Tea Tree: Yunnan large leaf species

Age of Tea Trees: 70 to 80 years

Fresh Leaves: One bud with 2 leaves

Material of Tea Bag: Corn fiber

This tea bag features its flavor which has slight glutinous rice flavor. It is a good routine beverage incorporated with the essence of “Nuo Xiang” plants grown in Xishuangbanna. The liquid is bright red brown in color and have a typical flavor of Pu-erh.

The tea leaves of TeaVivre new-coming Pu-erh pyramid tea bags are all from Yunnan province, which is the world’s original production place of tea. It chooses Yunnan large leaf species as material, has two kinds of tea bags: ripened pu-erh tea bag and raw pu-erh tea bag. Both the two kinds are strong, fragrant and mellow.

Ripened Pu-erh tea is fermented after pilling, and then the bitter taste is reduced. It is also called Shu/Shou Pu-erh. It tastes smooth, mellow and soft, with rich fragrance, and suitable for daily drinking. Raw Pu-erh does not go through the piling fermentation process, so it keeps the characteristic of fresh tea leaves: astringent fresh aroma, strong taste, and bright golden liquid. It is really a good choice for people who love new teas.

I’m a big fan of rice shou, so I stocked up on this during TeaVivre’s black Friday sale without even tasting it first. Luckily it is a good one! And SO convenient. The sachets are individually wrapped!!! I’m normally not a big fan of sachets or wasted packaging in general but these are going to be SO convenient for travel. Seriously. Awesome.

Quick rinse in boiling water and steeped 7 minutes in an 8 ounce mug.

Brewed color is coffee-like, and smells earthy with the light scent of cooked rice – very fragrant.
Tastes rich and earthy with a hint of sweetness that again would be similar to boiled rice.

Very nice, and I drank it with milk added which increased the sweet taste and added an extra smooth creaminess.
I think this would be an excellent and convenient option to take with you when not at home and craving a nice cup of pu-erh without any fuss.

Thank you to Angel at TeaVivre for sending this sample!

I chose this tea purely out of curiosity. I had heard of rice flavored teas but never tried one.

Edited to add: It is important to note that these are sized for ten ounce portions, which is really handy if you are making a mug at work. They were aware that if you are using sachets you are probably not using a gaiwan or a tiny pot for tiny cups! And you get multiple steeps, plus such a long steep time that it becomes even more convenient for work or really busy times.

I expected a hint of rice flavor mixed with shu puerh, but even the dry sachet smelled strongly of rice – the steeped tea even more so! And there is lots of the glutinous rice flavor in the cup. This tea is the essence of what you smell when your rice boils over a little and the sticky rice water slides down the side of your saucepan and you can smell it all through the house. I am amazed at how much rice flavor is in this. I really want a bowl of rice now!

The puerh aspect is an earthy one rather than a horse-y one. The first steep was quite dark, which isn’t surprising since they recommend a 9 to 12 minute steep for this. By the third steep we didn’t even time it, we just poured it up after finishing one of our school lessons and it was fine. Even my youngest daughter, who just started drinking puerh teas a couple of weeks ago, liked it!

Stephanie

oh I’ve been curious about the puerh tea bags! Good to know!

They are also sized for ten ounces water, which is nice because if you are using a sachet, you are probably drinking a mug of this rather than a small cup. Very convenient at work, and you get multiple steeps that retain their flavor. Now I want to try the rose one and the plain!

Stephanie

That does sound perfect :)

Glad someone reviewed the sachets. I expected Teavivre to do them right – glad to see it confirmed.

Stephanie

I really want some of these rice ones! Please send me some free to review Teavivre!!! ;)

Uniquity

I couldn’t find them on their site after they announced them. Super interesting!

ashmanra

I found them under the main heading “Pyramids.” You could probably leave this bag right in your mug and keep drinking it all morning without even removing the bag.
