Silver Jasmine Green Tea (Mo Li Yin Hao)

Its aroma is incredible and really makes you understand why jasmine teas are considered scented teas and not flavored teas. It has a very light flavor, nearly tasteless, but the aftertaste is like sweet mountain spring water. The experience for me in this tea is more in the aroma and the aftertaste than the taste of drinking the tea itself. Still, both make it worth it.

I probably would have given this a very high rating if I hadn’t tried their “award winning” jasmine tea first.

Tea flavor is very mild and smooth, giving way graciously to the beautiful aroma of the jasmine without any bitterness. Leaves a lovely light aroma on the back of the tongue for several minutes after drinking

additional notes: I had to get one session of a good jasmine tea in on a really hot day before I leave. This was such full jasmine, this sealed sample, and then I looked at my tea list and IT IS FROM 2014. wow that jasmine really lingers. 40% off on sale right now… I’m very tempted.

I’m back after taking a trip to Ottawa with my husband for our long-overdue honeymoon. We didn’t anticipate that our trip would coincide with some of the coldest weather experienced in that city in over 30 years, though – what timing!

So yes, our trip, while lovely, was cold. We’d return to the B&B after days spent tromping around museums and side streets, and I’d curl up with some tea in the evening.

This tea was one of the ones I brought with me. The leaf is very light and fluffy, and it was so nice to see whole jasmine flowers mixed in. A sign of quality!

The tea was equally light. However, I feel that I didn’t drink it under the best of circumstances – to really enjoy my tea and feel that I’m getting the most out of it, brewing it away from home where I have no thermometer and the water tastes different is not ideal.

I look forward to finishing up my sample under better circumstances. But I will most likely enjoy it, as I’m a big fan of jasmine.

I enjoyed this, but it pretty much tasted like a standard jasmine green tea to me. Strong flavor though, and it stood up to three steeps easily and was still flavorful at the end. If I weren’t ready to move on, I probably could have squeezed out a fourth.

Part of my Black Friday order. Jasmine green tea is one of the first teas I really loved and it’s really what got me into loose leaf tea about a year ago. I love the smell of this tea – super floral! Brewed up, this is just what I expected, very floral and light. For some reason this tastes more jasmine-y than the pearls version, which to some people might be a bad thing, but definitely a plus in my book :)

I’ve no business adding any more Yin Hao to my cupboard, as I have an ample supply of Tazo’s. Nonetheless, I am taking up this sample from Teavivre today to determine whether it’s really possible to have too much jasmine scented tea!

This variety appears to use a higher quality green tea base, hence the silver leaves interspersed with the other dark green spindly ones. I am assuming that those are not jasmine flowers but tea leaves, though I could be wrong.

The liquor brews up pale green, becoming more golden as it sits a bit, and the flavor is quite rich in jasmine. The texture is also good, but I’m not sure that, all things considered, I’d buy this one before the jasmine dragon pearls, which also offer a beautiful unveiling ceremony!

For a simpler, more puritanical jasmine green, this one is certainly good.

Shortly after discovering Steepster this brand new company offered to send me samples.One of those was Premium Jasmine Dragon Pearls. Until tasting that tea I never liked jasmine but I loved, no, LOVED dragon pearls. Later I got to try Jasmine Silver Needle White. I was equally blown away. Superfine Jasmine Downy Dragon Pearls continued the awesome trend – though for my tastes I actually still prefer the Premium version.

So a while back I ordered the Silver Jasmine green tea. I just got around to opening it yesterday. For the first cup I followed directions and used a lot more leaf than I normally would and steeped for 1 1/2 minutes. It was better than most non-Teavivre jasmine I have had but didn’t quite speak to me. It was a little too intense in floral notes though still natural tasting. Definitely not that fake jasmine perfume that lesser teas taste like. My other thought was it tasted, at first, like a jasmine blooming tea. That taste always makes me think globe amaranth. As the cup cooled or possibly as I got used to it that passed and it smoothed out. It was ok but I was pretty sure it could do better.

So today I followed my own rules by using my normal leaf amount of 1 rounded tsp (half what I used previously) and cut the steep to 1 minute. Now this I like. The jasmine is the main taste element but it doesn’t overwhelm my senses and it doesn’t drift into globe amaranth. Another thing I noticed was how the leaf made my fingers smell of grape Kool-Aid. Seriously, who doesn’t love the smell of grape Kool-Aid? And yes, I can’t help but play with my leaf. It is a very lovely less complex cup for simple enjoyment. I can see this being wonderful with a meal or snack.

Next time I plan to kick it back up to 1 1/2 minutes but keep the reduced leaf amount to see if I can pull a little more depth out of this everyday tea. Looking forward to many good cups out of this. Recommended but you may need to tinker with steeping parameters.

There is a nice balance between the jasmine and green tea flavors in this, but there is also something else going on. Not exactly a buttery undertone – but something along those lines? I can’t quite put my finger on it. Anyway, this is fine, but I think I still prefer Teavivre’s white jasmine tea to this.

Often when I have Jasmine tea, usually from a restaurant, it comes out like I’m drinking hot perfume. With this tea though, the aroma dances in light steps in my mouth, like an expert ballerina. I have also shared the tea with others and they say it does taste like perfume, but they say it with a surprised glee on their face.
