A chocolate tea I actually like.

Wait.. what? How is this possible? I don’t care for hazelnuts, but the flavour is so mild here, and they go so well with the dark chocolate flavours in the tea.

First there was a duplicate, now there’s a triplicate. But not when I edit the post. Anyone else see that weirdness?

CHAroma

I see it tripled. Maybe wait a little while and then try to edit later? I had some weird stuff going on with removing teas from my shopping list the other day, but now it’s working fine.

OMGsrsly

Good plan!

TeaLady441

Yeah I see it tripled. I wasn’t sure if you were just excited or Steepster was messing up. :P

OMGsrsly

Both, maybe? I mean… it IS tea.

OMGsrsly

Ahaha. Editing didn’t work again. Oh well!

Chizakura

Oh that’s funny, I thought it was done on purpose to really enforce your point, haha!

Glad you liked it though. :) Chocolate hazelnut… :D I’ve been curious about Harney for a while. Is their shipping to Canada reasonable?

OMGsrsly

It’s $15 flat rate for up to $50. Most of their teas come in tins, and are REALLY reasonable, so the $15 doesn’t seem like it’s too bad. Better if you can share with someone, but I’d pay it. :) I haven’t ordered from them personally yet.

I’ve had a couple flavoured blacks, and I’d say their teas are pretty good, nicely flavoured. Not the “best”, but pretty darn good. And so reasonably priced.

ashmanra

Harney Teas were my first “fine” teas. I still love their Keemun Mao Feng, Ali Shan, Boston, Rose Scented, Huang Shan Mao Feng, and Golden Monkey.

OMGsrsly

So far their flavoured black teas are better than a good portion of what’s available locally. A lot of the local shops purchase from the same suppliers, so they’ll only have a few different teas. H&S also has tins! With shipping, the prices are similar by weight, which is fine with me. I can’t always afford Butiki or Verdant or stuff from the specialty shops (There’s an Assam supplier here, but they only do mail order!).

My mom got us some of this to split in her last Harney’s order. I picked it up last weekend, when we had tea for her and my grandmother’s birthdays. Tea was so fun…had scones, cupcakes, and chocolate covered strawberries! Delicious! We also drank a bunch of my favorites, because my mom hadn’t tried them yet. We had blueberry crumble, ceylon star, and maple pecan oolong! Yum! We drank them in cute little teacups, which, for me, was not enough tea! I need my large 12-16 oz. mug! Crude, yes, but, I get more tea!

So, this tea….I think my expectations were too high. I really thought it would taste like Nutella. My mom warned me that the smell was better than the taste, and she’s right. It was good, but not as great as I was expecting. I’m also finding that I don’t like a lot of chocolate teas, which is a bummer because I really like chocolate! I can taste both the chocolate and the hazelnut, but wish the flavor was stronger. Maybe I need another cup to really appreciate it. I’ll try that! ;)

ohfancythat

I’m with you! Though I didn’t find it very chocolatey. Which was the problem :)

Alysha

Yum that tea party sounds awesome!

Fjellrev

I personally don’t find this chocolatey OR nutty enough. Glad I’m not the only one.

TastyBrew

Sounds fun! What was your mom and grandma’s favorite?

Tealizzy

Well, my grandma can’t drink caffeine, so she drank vanilla comoro, and tried a teaspoon of each tea. But my mom seemed to really like blueberry crumble and Ceylon star….she even asked for another sample of the latter.

TastyBrew

Nice! Your grandma sounds cute.

Also, I’m with you. I haven’t mastered sipping tea, I guzzle, so I’m also a fan of the mug vs the cup. Although for trying a bunch at a time a cups the best way to go. Although I’d still guzzle. My days of chugging beers. I don’t know how to drink any other way :-)

So Alphakitty sent me a bunch of H&S teas during our recent swap, which was awesome since I’m seeing everyone on here raving about them, and I had yet to try any! Also, I’m so taken by the city names… as if I needed convincing to want to try the whole line of such-named teas! Today I have brewed up Tokyo, Bangkok, Florence, Paris, and Boston. I have a SoHo blend too… uhhhh…. yeah, that’s it. Should have brewed that one up too!

I decided to make a game of this and guess the tea flavouring by scent/taste. I’m not actually terribly familiar with what each of these blends is, so this should be fun!!

Florence definitely smells quite like a fruity dark chocolate. The type of fruitiness in particular escapes me, although I could be led to believe it’s cherry, as the aroma reminds me a bit of chocolate covered cherries. I’m fairly certain it is not cherry, though.

The first sip tastes much like the aroma. I’m surprised to find that it’s a bit weak given my 4 minutes of steeping, 1.5tsp tea and 8oz. water, but perhaps it needed that additional minute that was written on the bag. It is definitely chocolatey though, with just a hint of fruity. I can’t taste the black tea base as much as I would like, and there’s definitely no astringency or bitterness, so an additional minute likely only would have helped. Still good though. Not a tea I’d purchase as it’s a familiar flavour, so I think it’s much like one of the teas from DavidsTea (Love Tea #7??), which is much more easily obtainable if I’m in the mood.

And the verdict? I think I came the closest on this one, yay! Definite chocolate, and I can see the cherry/hazelnut confusion (even if the rest of you can’t! Hmph!) One more sip and I’m more inclined to believe that there’s hazelnut in the blend than before, but I swear it’s still a bit like cherries, too :D

Thanks Alphakitty!

Good job testing yourself!

Alphakitty

With milk & sugar this reminds me of a Ferrero Rocher… totally decadent and delicious.

Alphakitty

Oh also I found this the weakest of their flavored blacks that I own, so definitely try with the full 5 minutes.

Kittenna

Mmmmmm, Ferroro Rocher…. haven’t had one of those in a while! They’re a Christmas treat usually, and “Santa” didn’t put any in our stockings this past year.

Sipdown!! (214)

Thank you Cavocorax for the sample of this tea. I really expected to love it but I think I am searching too hard for liquid nutella as opposed to just letting this be its own entity. This is definitely a chocolate tea and I can detect hints of hazelnut but it simply falls short of my expectations and for that reason alone I won’t miss this now that its gone. However, I am definitely grateful to have tried it so once again thank you Cavo!

Also, I added a splash of milk just to see what that did and weirdly it really bumped up the hazelnut flavor. Alas, there still isn’t the nutella balance I am so desperately seeking. The issue I have with this tea really is all on me and not a reflection of the tea. It was doomed from the start :(

Dexter

I love Florence. Somehow it makes me sad that you don’t love it too.
If you are seeking “liquid nutella”, have you thought about Herbal Infusions tea blending kits. Just a thought, but one of the flavor vials is chocolate hazelnut. Maybe that would allow you to control how much goes in so you could find the perfect balance you are looking for.
http://herbalinfusions.ca/products/tea-blending-kits

VariaTEA

Oh no Dex. I don’t want to make you sad. If it helps at all, there are other Harney blends I really enjoy like SoHo, Boston Blend, and Vanilla Comoro. Also I was looking at the blending kits but I think I will hold off on ordering until I get my tea stash sort of under control.

Dexter

“I think I will hold off on ordering until I get my tea stash sort of under control.” – LOL I think that pretty much sums up my situation too. I like Soho and Boston too, but Florance is special for me. Hope you eventually find your special one. :))

sherapop

I have got to try this! I’ll add it to my wishlist at Harney & Sons…

Sample sipdown! I’ve imposed a moratorium on myself that 75 is the maximum number of teas I should have at any time. This brings me down to 73…a few more and I can go shopping, haha!

Steep notes: 12 oz. water, 2 tsp. leaf, below parameters, no additives.

I was worried I’d used too much leaf this time around, and that it would be bitter. The liquor was a dark chocolate brown, nearly opaque actually. It ended up absolutely perfect though: unsweetened, smooth dark chocolate, hazelnut at the end of the sip. The flavoring in this is amazingly well done, and just the right intensity.

I’m late on the bandwagon for this, it seems, but no less impressed. Perhaps my next tea order will be a Harney one then? :)

I keep wondering what my max # of teas should be and I can’t come up with a good number! I was thinking 50, which is full of variety but sensible (for a tea freak!). Alas, I’m at 84 (but some are very tiny amounts).

Sil

oh man. I wish i had that kind of control…

TeaLady441

I am slowly getting to a point where I’ve
a) tried most of the teas in my cupboard (I have a few samples) and
b) know that I LIKE these teas (because I buy a few just to see).

I’ll be happy when I have 70-100 teas that I know I like, on hand for whenever the mood strikes… The problem is that there are always new tea companies to try out, but I want to focus on enjoying the ones that I know are good, instead of my previous situation where I had A LOT of tea and was indifferent to a good chunk of it.

Sil

I’m with you on that rough number cavo….sadly i need drop like 150 to get there.

TeaLady441

You just need to put it into perspective. At least you don’t have 700 teas/samples like… some people here. :P Bwahaha

Also, I didn’t realise you’d been here for less than a year – so I can see your numbers going down and staying down once you’ve actually sampled everything and got a nice rotation figured out. #ideally? (I’ve been her for only 6 months or so but I was definitely victim to what I dub the Steepster Effect – where you have to BUY and TRY ALL THE TEAS. That number has to go down at some point though… Or am I just lying to myself?)

Sil

mmmm i still want to drink ALL THE TEA! My number has actually sort of gone down in the sense that now i can share a lot more orders with Kittenna and Indigobloom and Raritea so that’s helped in terms of volume of tea. i just need to drink all the tea terri sent me – 71 samples killed my cuboard lol

TeaLady441

71 samples? That’s INSANE. :O (insanely awesome)

Sil

cavo…lol yeah. we both sent each other boxes of samples… no idea how many i sent her way but i’m sure it was over 40. we just kinda kept adding things lol

Every time a Steepsterite posts a tasting note about this tea, I have a Pavlovian conditioned response! My mouth waters, and I vow to make it for my evening tea. Now I am finally home and snug and drinking my Florence!! Ahhhh. So sweet and delicious. I love the gentle hazelnut flavor. Thank you PattiM for a most excellent idea :)

What a lovely easy to drink tea! Thank you MERCURYHIME (capitalizing since I don’t know how to bold) for sharing this sample with me! Also thank you for sending enough for a second cup – I really like it! This has been on my shopping list It think since I joined steepster! Don’t know why I have not picked any up yet. Some things just got stuck on the list.
It is indeed chocolaty and I also happened to have a bit of chocolate here to eat while sipping! YAY! Also tasting the nuttiness!
Now I am not saying it is THE most complex tea ever but it is nice, it is exactly what it says it is and we need more of those teas out there in flavored teas!
As for the base, I am not sure what kind of black tea they are using, but it is very light which is fine, I think I would not mind a bit bolder of a black tea though.
All in all – I am pleased with this one!

Missy

I think you use an asterisk on each side.

Missy

Yup or copy and paste the name.

Azzrian

WOOOO FREAKING HOOOOO thank you Missy!!! :)

Lucy

Ooh yummy! Chocolate and nuttiness! Yay for tea! =)

Missy

Your welcome ;)

Azzrian

Yeah I let my daughter have the last of it though I HAD to share :)

Mercuryhime

Glad you liked it!

This tea makes me think of Japan. What? Yeah, I know. Florence. Italy. Europe. Nowhere near Japan. And yet. But perhaps this clarification will help: this tea makes me think of Japanese snacks. Specifically Toppo, a little sweet pretzel-like tube stuffed with chocolate. (It’s basically an inside-out Pocky but (for some reason) so much better.) There was something about that tube that balanced the chocolate so nicely. Which meant that I wouldn’t get sweetness overloaded and would eat way too many at a time.

This tea is like Toppo. The chocolate is balanced nicely with the hazelnut and tea tastes so it doesn’t feel like plain old chocolate. Instead it is rich, decadent, adult-type chocolate. Given the mood I was in when I had the tea (an oh-please-someone-kill-me-and-put-me-out-of-my-misery-preferably-before-I-maim-you mood), I went ahead and added sugar and half & half because I wanted needed the full-on dessert tea experience. And boy did this tea deliver. Delicious! No single flavor is overpowering so I didn’t sit there and think “Oh, this is a chocolate tea” because it is really much more than a one dimensional taste like that. The flavors are so bold, rich and sweet that I ended up thinking it tasted like a fancy flavored coffee. (Is it sacrilege to say that?)

Anyway, enough people have gushed about this little beauty that I probably should have stopped a hundred words ago but I just can’t help myself. Through the power of this tea alone, I will be able to refrain from killing someone today.

Thanks to Doulton for the chance to try this lovely beast!

YUM – a favorite of mine!

SoccerMom

I love this one too. I’m glad it stopped you from going postal.

LENA

LOL…it’s a Florence day for sure. I drank a few cups of it this morning and posted too. I was impressed!

Miss Sweet

Oh this sounds so lovely. I hope to have a fresh bag of this soon to try!

Lori

Hmm,,I am almost finished the sample Doulton sent me and I will need to order this one. It is the best chocolate tea!

Auggy

Yes to everyone – such a good tea that could easily be a favorite! I’m definitely going to have to get some of this. Yay for Florence Day! :)

Ewa

OMG, so this note is from a month ago, but I just have to say…Toppo is the BEST THING EVER. The use of pretzel like crispy outside instead of boring old biscuit makes it superior to pocky in EVERY WAY.

(Just tried Florence and was reading other people’s notes, fyi)

Auggy

Toppo is totally superior to Pocky! It’s awesome-ness in stick form!

Stephanie

Walgreen’s sells Toppo here! I have to try it. I love Pocky!

Auggy

Okay, that is officially awesome. I wish my Walgreen’s sold Toppo!

Ewa

For serious. Fortunately, there’s a Japanese import store right next to Trader Joe’s, hopefully there will be Toppo!

Erin Hurley

Your review made me buy this. It’s brewing nowwwww!

I bought it at a Japanese import store :3

Ashley Bain

Okay I totally want to try Toppo now.

This… reminds me of some smell I used to have in my life several years ago, I’m thinking high school. I don’t remember what it was, but it was either some kind of lotion or some kind of lip balm. It’s got a “fake chocolate flavoring” kind of vibe that should be off-putting, but when it comes to tea, I really don’t mind it. Actually kind of like it.

Just don’t expect it to taste like hot cocoa like the item descrip implies. There’s supposed to be hazelnut. That might be contributing to what makes the flavor a little different.

I don’t know if everyone would like it, but I do.

I am not gonna lie, I was full to the brim with admiration for the tastiness and awesomeness of this tea. It smells DIVINE, it tastes amazing and it is lovely and awesome, although I’m gonna have to find some Toppo and eat it before I can confirm the resemblance. It is a sacrifice, but one I am willing to make.

Anyway, I was gonna wax poetic about every aspect of this tea and how its subtlety was a lovely change form other dessert teas I have tried and how I have to buy a whole thing of it right NAO. But…I got into a particularly bad pug and not even the amazingness of Florence can counter the frustration and general put-upon-ness I am feeling right now. AND the worst part is that I am blowing it way out of proportion because a stupid offhand remark from one of the worst offenders happened to evoke an…unpleasant memory.

I sulk now. But Florence is delicious!

(Note: you will never see me give out a 100 because I will always be all like “but what if some even MORE awesome tea comes up later? what will I give THAT?” Yeah, it’ll probably never happen, but WHAT IF IT DOES?)

__Morgana__

Lol. You never fail to crack me up. I stopped playing WoW because I’m west coast on a west coast realm and yet, every damn guild I was in was made up of mostly central or east coast time players who started raiding while I was still at work. So I was relegated to pugs or filling in when people had to drop out and ugh, what a disappointment. Finally I realized I was stressing over my supposed escapism and I just stopped showing up. The moral of the story is: you should NOT let these bozos spoil Florence for you!

Ewa

Yah, my guild starts raiding pretty early too (6pm) but that’s the only time we could get the majority of our members to agree on. I tried really hard to rise above! But…ugh, it was just an unfortunate turn of phrase. At least I’ll be ready if it happens again.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add this to the note: If you did not understand paragraph 2 because you did not know what a pug is OR think I am talking about a small dog, congratulations! you probably have a life :D

Rabs

LOL! I shouldn’t be congratulated: at the beginning of the paragraph I was like “is that a drug term?” Then I figured out that it’s not and felt extra unhip. Then I read __Morgana__’s note and it all clicked into place. ;)

As for your last paragraph: it put me in mind of the scene from This is Spinal Tap where there’s the discussion about amps going to 11. My personal theory is that if that particular tea rating paradox occurs, then Steepster will implode. foop!

__Morgana__

Haha, that you mentioned the amp going to 11. My BF uses that example all the time for when you can’t get someone to see the logic of a situation. But isn’t is just a 10 crossed out with an 11 painted in? No, its 11. Lol.

__Morgana__

oh and Rabs, pug = pick up group. Defined as an inherently unreliable and disorganized group of players in a MMORPG supposedly trying to make it through a dungeon, usually unsuccesfully and with a lot of annoying behavior and name calling ensuing.

Rabs

It’s been several years since I played Dark Age of Camelot (yes, you WoWers feel free to roll your eyes), so I was rusty on some of the terms. I was part of a dying guild, so I’d only been a part of 2 pugs which were pretty meh. I preferred solo or duo quests and enjoyed being a blacksmith and taking armor/weapon requests.
