Eggnog Matcha

Another tea that was nearly to the bottom of the bag and a friend helped sip it down! I found an unopened bag of this about two weeks ago (August 19ish). With the weather changing and Fall slowly making its entrance, I decided it was best to make this my daily drink. I knew that this was sitting in the cupboard with enough for two iced matcha’s, so I topped it off during Labor Day!

This doesn’t really taste like eggnog, but it does taste really good. I get more of a sugar cookie vibe from the flavor. It’s sweet and desserty and very lightly spiced, just like eggnog. It’s missing the egginess, but it has everything else, so I’d really call this one a success. The matcha flavor was totally hidden beneath the other flavors, which I was okay with. It was so creamy and nice that I didn’t even add whipped cream to the top, like I usually do.

I used flaxmilk for this cup and I’m uncertain if that was the right choice. It didn’t froth up which was a bit of a disappointment. I used two spoonfuls because one wasn’t a rich enough flavor. I guess this tastes a little custardy, but I don’t quite get eggnog. I don’t taste any nutmeg and creamy nutmeg is prime eggnog flavor to me. I don’t dislike this, but it’s not what I expected from the name. I pickup a light warm cinnamon. If the cinnamon was stronger it could pass as an horchata matcha which would be fun. I suppose I could add either spice to future cups for the desired effect.

As it is, this cup is now gone and there is a syrup tasting experiment going on in my kitchen that I need to attend. One of the tiny roommates bought an overpriced bottle of Aunt Jemima high fructose corn syrup and in an effort to educate about the difference between that bottle of cancer and pure maple syrup (by now you can see my elite maple syrup snobbery shining through clearly) we are holding a taste test before the poor auntie gets tipped down the drain and real maple syrup once again reigns supreme in this house. So say we all!

My tastebuds are doing all sorts of crazy today because a lot of this latte was custard-y/eggnog, but some of it tasted like popcorn. That’s not right and that’s on me.

…and, for now, we’re at the last of the new teas.

I feel like it’s been a minute or two since DT last put out a new seasonal matcha flavour and truthfully I’m a little surprised we’re only just now getting an eggnog matcha. I still have some of Matcha Outlet’s Eggnog Matcha that I’ve been slowly finishing off as lattes, so it’s nice that I can now really crush that sample and have a fallback eggnog matcha because they’re honestly just so good.

I really like this one a lot – it has that thick and rich custardy flavour that an eggnog inspired tea just needs to have no matter what the base tea is, and the spice notes are perfectly present. Hints of warming nutmeg and cinnamon that really don’t overtake the focus on the velvety creamy custard but that instead add depth and contrast.

I forsee myself making a lot of this matcha as indulgent lattes this winter!
