Spiced Carob (Organic) (Formerly Dr. Chocolate)

I found this tea to be really confusing. I didn’t really get a chocolate taste out of it. This tastes like Chinese five spice powder, which I don’t like unfortunately. It has the licorice, sweet, spicy taste that tries to make up a chocolate taste. My tastebuds unfortunately don’t like it and it’s not going to be a repurchase for me.

Made for me at a DavidsTea store.

I sniffed this one last week and found it dusty; I blamed the cinnamon. I also didn’t like th elook of it; dark oolong generally doesn’t appeal to me. And the former name, Dr CHocolate, irked me because the blend contains no chocolate. See? mbh, the tea bitch.

It’s got a pleasant ginger bite which balances well with the cinnamon and carob. Inoffensive. But I detected no oolong at all. I’d drink this medicainlly, but I doubt I’ll drink it for pleasure.

Dr. Chocolate. I always looked at this tea online – oolong tea with chocolate and carob? hell yeah! Carob brings me back to my vegan days! But I’d get scared off by the other stuff in it – cardamon and ginger. Uggg cardamon, I always tried making my own chai teas with it and cardamon is expensive plus I found it added a horrible flavor to my teas.
When I was in store, I can’t remember if it was another sales gal or a customer that said this tea is good. Ehhh.. why not?

Dry leaves smell – spicy with a hint of chocolate. Not bad. Please this taste like super chocolate punch to the face.
Steeped – smells like chocolate and yeah.. cardamon. Steeps a light brown.

Taste – DAMN YOU CARDAMON. That flat spice of cardamon hits me right at first sip! However, the lovely part of this tea is the ginger zinging you at the end with an aftertaste of chocolate and carob. Definitely reminds me of a chai tea. However, I’d have Chocolate Chai teas (Adagio Tea) that I found was nicer in terms of more chocolate flavour, but weaker in spice. I wish that tea and this one would combine (with less cardamon). However, Dr Chocolate lacks that deep earthy flavour of stronger black tea to make it more chai-like, setting it apart.

With that said, I’m going to try brewing this as a chai next time, add some milk. Overall, I’m not going to buy more and I might unload it on someone. I would like to taste more chocolate or have a creamy element, like a vanilla or white chocolate.

If you like spicy tea and something different than a black tea, give this one a try. Unfortunately not very chocolately or caroby though to my liking.

I was expecting this one to be a little bit more chocolatey… but I’m still enjoying it. I love that there’s a slight spiciness to this one, and when I steeped it at home I broke up half a cinnamon stick into the basket and let it steep with the tea. Fantastic.
I take this one clear with agave. But I’m thinking about trying it as a latte at some point as well.

Chocolate, Spice, and Everything Nice

I really enjoyed this tea on my first try. I smelled the unsteeped tea in the store and was immediately drawn in by the spicy chocolate aroma.

Much like the Super Chocolate from DavidsTea, Dr. Chocolate has cinnamon and chocolate flavours, however Dr. Chocolate has the wonderful additions of spices such as ginger and cardamom. Once steeped, the other spices in the brew really come out and it smells even better than before. I didn’t think I would like ginger and chocolate together, but the smell is oddly comforting and the flavours are all very complimentary. This tea is delicious, it has a great nutty chocolate taste without being the overbearing chocolate taste that can be found in other chocolate teas. The spices are really nice together with the carob (what gives the tea its chocolate flavour) and the cardamom isn’t overpowering like it is in some other teas.

Overall, I really enjoyed this tea and will definitely be going back for another try.

I’m warming up to this tea each time I drink it it grows on me.

It tastes EXACTLY like taking a bite out of dark chocolate(which I am not actually a big fan of)It has the perfect bitterness and smokiness of dark chocolate with no sweetness.

Not an everyday tea but when I get a chocolate craving I’m going to reach for this instead.

This isn’t a bad tea, it is just not my cuppa. It reminds me too much of super chocolate, which I am also not a fan of. I guess I can’t like every single tea from DAVIDsTEA :(
I just found that it was too much spice and not enough chocolate.

Tried this for a second time and it is good, but not my favorite. I think I am realizing that certain chocolate teas are not my favorite types. After the second buble cup of tea, I wanted something different so I went to one of my more favorite teas.

All in all good, had bought 25 grams to taste and will most likely not buy it again.

also, cardamom is the main ingredient that you taste. Then there’s the cinnamon and ginger. They all combine to make this beautifully balanced spice mix that makes your taste buds go WILD.

This is the perfect example of how branding can influence your preferences. When this was known as Dr. Chocolate, I was head over heels for it. My original notes on this one say, and I quote, “Tastes like chocolate and ginger! Lovely and warming. A favourite.” I loved it. So guess how happy I was when I learned it had been rebranded as Spiced Carob? Soooooo happy!! I’d always avoided Spiced Carob, because I hate carob (or, as I like to think of it, IMPOSTOR CHOCOLATE) with a burning, blinding, aggressive, sinful passion. But, as they say, what’s in a name, roses, sweetness, yada yada yada… so I gleefully procured myself a cup of Spiced Carob, and… enh. The thrill is gone.
