A few months ago, David tried a fruity dessert tea that knocked his socks off. It was subtle and refined, delicately floral and slightly sweet. He was intrigued. He had to have it. But what was the secret ingredient? Cranberries. Normally associated with a neon red holiday sauce, these beautiful berries really sing when paired with rich, floral black tea. Here we blend them with big pieces of pear and apple for the fruit and black tea blend you won’t believe you ever went without.

I had this brewed over ice last summer while visiting DAVIDs on a whim with a friend. That time, the flavors really pulled through, and I was moved to buy a couple ounces. Now, drunk hot, I hardly hear any notes other than the acidity of the black tea, the less dimensional pear, and the artificial flavoring. Bummer.

I’m having a remarkably craptastic week (it’s only Wednesday!) so I made a tea cocktail when I got home yesterday afternoon. If I had cake or cookies or ice cream or any sort of sweets at home, I would’ve eaten them for dinner. Seriously, so bad.

Cranberry Pear (steeped as you would for a latte) + brown sugar + Bailey’s + almond milk, over ice.

Sweet merciful heavens, I die.

So that’s why my tea cocktails always turned out poorly- I never steeped it strong enough! Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I’d definitely experiment. I made a big drink (a bit over 16 ounces), and it was essentially a latte with Bailey’s added so that’s why I steeped it the way I did. YMMV, especially if you’re using a really strong tea to begin with (like a chai). But this is mostly fruit with a a fairly weak black tea base, so I figured stronger would be better. :)

oh man, I love this Tournament of TEAS idea.  It goes right along with my beloved Morning News Tournament of Books (that I’m really behind on the reading for… I’ve only read 9/18 books for….) so I’m already behind on one tournament so why not be crazy and DO A BRACKET WITH 32 TEAS.  Let’s do this thing.  I’m going to do one of the tea days in the brackets whenever I feel up to it, otherwise I will miss the funsy choice days.  So the brackets will definitely skip those days.How did I choose the teas?  I had two ‘random number generators’ up on google.  One for page number and one for the number of teas on each page (18).  I may have skipped adding a couple of the results to the bracket for one reason or another but it was already fun creating this bracket!!!  SO the first round of this tea tournament will take longer than 16 days, drinking the teas side by side in round one, but then after that some of these teas might be sipdowns, so I might just make quick decisions after that unless I want to revisit some tough decision future matches.  Thanks for the idea Mastress Alita.  If anything, it’s a great way to get some of these long lost teas out of the back of the cupboard.  And some of them that popped up I have been meaning to drink soon anyway!  

March Mad(Hatter) Tea Tournament!
Round #1 – Match #1    Davids – Cranberry Pear  VS.  Butiki – White Rhino

So a question: should I be judging these teas on how I remember them tasting over the years, as some of these are realllllyyy old? Or should I be judging them solely on the cups I’m steeping that day?
For this match, a tough one!  But not really.  The Cranberry Pear has always been consistent but also consistently old.  I’m not sure I’ve ever tried this tea fresh, but I would love to!  The pouch was probably old when I got it, and now it’s GONE.  I do like the idea of Cranberry Pear… it’s sweet, fruity, I love that it has vanilla. It’s amazing for an old tea.  And so much vanilla in the dregs of the pouch!  But what tea can really match up against White Rhino?   White Rhino is EVOLVING people.  It looks like a golden black tea now. Mostly gold leaves with hints of black.  You’d never guess this was once a white tea.  The flavor now is fairly starchy.  It’s not as good as it once was.  But the longevity both within a steep session and in how the tea ages over the years gives this tea points. Does it help that both teas are probably the same age?  It sure seems fair.  This was an extremely tasty sendoff for Cranberry Pear (probably the best cups I’ve ever had and I will raise the rating from a 73), and I’d love to stock up on more in the future, but the  winner here is…White Rhino.

Hahahahaha. I could do this exact matchup, as I have both teas in my cupboard. I’m pretty sure Cranberry Pear does have vanilla flavouring… or something delicious and creamy. It’s not quite as creamy in the new batches IMO.

Holiday TTB

This one was nice, but it didn’t knock my socks off. Could be the age of the sample, but I’m really not picking up any pear flavor…just a nice, smooth black base with a bit of sweet/tart cranberry layered on top. Nice, but forgettable.

I must admit, i wasn’t a fan at first. As others have mentioned, the tea base itself is a bit on the weak side. Preferring more tea flavor and less fruitiness I almost put this one away.

Glad I didn’t though, i’m actually really enjoying it. May experiment with adding a stronger tea to create a blend of sorts. Either way, i’m giving it a solid 85.

I find myself having to breathe out through my nose in order to actually taste anything. It has an oddly sweet, vanilla-type flavour that pairs in an almost sickly way with the light pear notes. I think it could be pleasant to drink while surrounded by piles of shortbread cookies, but otherwise it gives the feeling of overindulging in an entire plate of desserts.

I love flavored blacks, and aside from some grocery store bought teas that are rather tasty, this is the best black that I’ve been able to find. It surprised me that I liked pear flavor! I didn’t think I would. This is the tea I drink when I want to be ultra soothed, and can handle the caffeine – even though the caffeine is supposed to be low on this one.

Love having this tea iced, it’s surprisingly light and refreshing for a black tea. At first, it sounds like an odd combination, seeing as cranberries are generally tart, but it’s a surprisingly good combination and sweeter as opposed to tart.
