From Cuppa Geek

Oh what a treat this blend turned into. . . black tea, dried cranberries, dried blueberries, dried cherries, peppermint leaves, natural cranberry flavor, raspberry leaves and natural cream flavor. Refreshing, tart, with a touch of sweetness.

This was a little bitter and meh without milk, but once I added it, the flavor transformed. It totally tastes like berries and cream (I wish their actual berries and cream flavor had been more similar to this!) The milk brings out the creaminess, and there’s a light berry flavor there too, though it’s hard to tell what kind of berry. The berry could have been stronger and more authentic. Overall, it’s probably not something I’d choose again over other choices, but it’s good.

gmathis

I flipped back to my review of the same blend to compare notes with yours … it appears, across the board of reviewers, that milk is the magic that makes this one better.

AJRimmer

Yeah, I add milk to 99% of my black teas because it basically always makes it tastier to me!

Not sprays of twigs with red plastic berries at the end, festooned with plasticized snow and glitter. Not a cranberry scone with a drizzle of glaze. Rather, the visual of a light layer of frozen rain glistening on the tiny red cranberries lining the boardwalk of the kettle bog, a hidden pocket, a remnant of Ohio’s glaciation. The same glassy glaze on the highbush blueberry of higher ground. Thick piles of sphagnum moss in impenetrably dark water, pitcher plants, tamaracks. I like when tea reminds me of my roots, and, at the risk of sounding like an old person… the good days, memories of which, in this moment, are now heavily relied upon. Lightly flavored, let it cool a bit. Throw in a little nostalgia from childhood – play-doh – and consider me lost temporarily to better times.

Thank you for the care package, ashmanra :) I’m down to the last few teaspoons, so I’m off to place a small order for me and Kiki.

Nice! New Jersey, famous for cranberry bogs, is the state next to the one where I grew up. The NJ Pine Barrens, night trips there to catch a glimpse of The Jersey Devil and the bogs are some of my good memories from another time.

ashmanra

Awww, this is a lovely tasting note and I am so glad you enjoyed it! I placed an order last night for a few favorites and I really shouldn’t have ordered some of this one but I am ordering again as soon as the Valentine’s special is available so I will get it then! You should be a writer, derk. Well, you already are, but I would love to read a whole book of you waxing poetic!

derk

White Antlers, I’m happy you were able to return to your place. What’s the Jersey Devil anyway? While I love it here, I still do not experience a strong sense of place. Planting native plants around our yard helps to firm it, though, little by little. Giving myself to the land. That was today’s therapy, at least.

ashmanra, thank you. I have no idea what I’d write a book about. It would probably be too similar to Annie Dillard with a lesser vocabulary to have a unique voice. I placed an order today, too. Didn’t tell Kiki. It’s addressed to her :)

mrmopar

Ah the Jersey Devil, that thing has been around for ages….

White Antlers

mrmopar I am delighted you know of the Jersey Devil! LOL

derk Heavens, I cannot say what bliss it is to wake up every morning and know that I am finally home. It’s been 6 years since I moved back but every day is filled with the quiet joy of finally being back to where I came from.

Rather than write a long tale, I’ll send you a link. He’s sort of the Sasquatch of the Northeast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil

gmathis

Our local Sasquatch is a little more ethereal: https://www.joplinmo.org/575/The-Spook-Light

ashmanra

Gmathis – our local boo is a lot like yours! My father saw it in his youth, but said he could not call it a ghost, just a light. There are two nearby, actually, Vander and Maco. It is likely methane or electrical discharge as your article states.

derk, you could too write like Annie Dillard! Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is one of my favorites, though has been a while.

CuppaGeek Advent Calendar – Day 7

I really liked this one. I didn’t get any bitterness like Sil did. It was just sweet cranberry flavor that is reminding me of the Cranberry Pear tea by DAVIDsTEA. It made me happy and went down real fast.

ashmanra

This is one I want to order!

Day 2 Advent
I wasn’t a fan of this when it was hot. There was a bitter edge to it that made me make a face. That being said, after it had cooled a bit, i was better with it. the bitter edge flattened out and it became a tea that i’d drink. However i’m not really getting cranberry from this and as a result it’s nothing special to me. Not a BAD tea, but just middle of the road.

Still glad to try it and am loving this advent! Also…at least it only took me two days to realise the stickers are scratchable hahahaha

ashmanra

Sil SAME! Ha ha! I know it said to scratch off the stickers, but I sort of scratched and didn’t see anything happening so I thought we were just supposed to pull it off. So that’s what I did. Today it would NOT come off so I gave scratching a better try and realized she really did mean to scratch it off!

gmathis

(oops) I peeled, not scratched.

Sil

i didn’t even realise shed said scratch…you just have to try and catch the right spot or it doesn’t scratch.

Ever since gmathis said this was more “Berries and Cream” to her, I have wanted to try it. The name Frosted Cranberry didn’t appeal to me much because I drank a LOT of cranberry juice years ago for health reasons and not for pleasure. I just found it too tart, so I was afraid this tea would just be tart and hibiscus-y.

When my advent from Cuppageek came, I pawed through all the packets and noticed that a few letters of the name peek out from some of the stickers, so I could tell what this one was.
Yes, friends, I cheated on the first day of advent and instead of randomly pulling out a packet I chose this one because I just couldn’t wait to try it.

I LOVE IT! I used my Kamjove and made the first steep and poured off a tiny bit to taste full strength, then made a second steep right on top of what was left in the Kamjove so the two combined.

This is sooo good, so sweet and smooth. It does have the ever so slightest hint of briskness at times so you know your are drinking TEA and not a bunch of flavorings. The cream flavor is reminiscent of Parker’s Blend (not the Evening version) but where PB has the betgamot going on this has fruit and berry! Oh so good. I made my husband smell the empty packet which was cruel since we were out. He liked.

It was so good that this afternoon I made a third steep and it was STILL good. Yes, it was muted, but still flavorful and well worth my time to make and drink.

I used boiling water at 3 minutes if anyone is interested in how I made my three steeps.

Must have more.

Courtney

Berries and cream, yum!

Lexie Aleah

You know it must be good when your making someone else smell an empty packet of tea haha. I’ve definitely done this before!

derk

You funny lady, you.

VariaTEA

Looking forward to trying this one now!

Martin Bednář

You cheater! Haha. I am glad that you liked it as I did. I also checked the Kamjove and now aI think I need one of those pots. Hopefully one day!

gmathis

I love the “rules don’t apply” approach to this advent batch. Glad you like it as much as I do.

Sil

haha this was my tea today too randomly!!

ashmanra

Martin: I use the heck out of my Kamjove! I love it! I hope you can get one.

Gmathis: Even before 2020 I pretty much threw rules out the window! I am a tea renegade.

Mastress Alita

There are rules? I bought two matcha advents that I immediately ripped open back in… October? November? just to get all the samplers for my smoothies. I always do badly at the “must drink this tea this day” thing anyway… (I don’t know how y’all do fifteen of these things a day when I have trouble finding the time to do one)…

Martin Bednář

ashmanra: I can imagine why… it’s perfect tea pot for one!
*Mastress Alita: * Rules? That’s so 2019!

gmathis

I don’t know how y’all do fifteen of these things a day and accomplish anything other than trips back and forth to the water closet ;) (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)

Martin Bednář

Just stumbled across this song: https://www.jamendo.com/track/1733595/rules-don-t-apply-remastered/lyrics

RULES DON’T APPLY; isn’t that right this year?

White Antlers

Ok-here’s a great 80s song that tells us ’the rules do not apply…"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0XjezfWXu8

ashmanra

White Antlers: Me like! Reminded me a little of New Gold Dream by Simple Minds for some reason. My husband asked what I was listening to, said it sounded very 80’s. I told him it IS 80’s! Spot on. He liked it, too.

White Antlers

ashmanra Jerry Harrison was originally with Talking Heads. As far as I recall, that track is from his only solo album.

Today morning I was craving for something fruity, but not caffeine-free, so I decided to brew this one. Dry leaf isn’t much cranberry forward, but certainly doesn’t smell like straight forward tea. Certainly I can see some green leaves in blend but haven’t seen any of the fruits.

Anyway, used maybe only one teaspoon, though heaped a bit and brewed for four-five minutes. I see now it is suitable for multiple steeps, but I did just one.

In taste it was way more cranberry like. Indeed tart as expected from cranberries, some creamy and sweet notes and some menthol. Overall it works well together, the base is present in taste as well (that’s something I highly enjoy!).

Well done! I look forward to finish my sample from derk, or it’s from White Antlers actually? Doesn’t matter — thank you both!

derk is the one to thank for this.

Courtney

The name is this one is intriguing. It sounds pretty tasty too.

Martin Bednář

White Antlers: Well, I thought so. But wasn’t sure…
Courtney: It is tasty, especially when you want something fruity, but as well with caffeine. This delivers both.

Courtney

Love that. David’s (used to?) have a Cranberry Pear that was quite good with a black base.

derk

It’s actually via ashmanra <3 I like this one and was excited to pass some to you. Glad you enjoyed it.

Martin Bednář

Oh well. That is unexpected plot twist :D So, thank you ashmanra!

gmathis

That is on my CuppaGeek want list.

Martin Bednář

gmathis: it’s indeed nice tea. I hope you will get luck getting it and enjoying it afterwards!

Checkmark on the light mint and checkmark on the cranberry-like red fruit note. However, I still strongly feel like the third unnamed but definitely main flavour here is this fondant/icing sugar creaminess that can come off a little pasty when combined with the mint. It’s still a good tea and I like how robust and tannic the black tea is, but I can never really decide if I’m excited to be drinking it, y’know?

Milk alchemy! I misjudged leaf-to-mug ratio and steeped this stronger than desired this morning; however, milk and a magic sprinkle of sugar not only toned down the nippiness, it pumped up the peppermint, which I knew was in the blend, but hadn’t really noticed before. It’s like getting a whole new tea!

Hope you have a minute as the year ends to stop and count some blessings that came your way in 2020. There were some. This year, you just have to look.

Martin Bednář

You are right, even this year looks like complete disaster, there are a few things that I am grateful for. It could be passed exams (in my case Algorithms and programming), or that we are still all in family, even though Covid struck our family too; or just small things that made us smile, for instance a tea-mail :)

gmathis

There you go! (And a special happy dance for passing your courses. I just barely squeaked by my college programming courses … ahem, … just a few years ago. I’m sure they’re much more difficult now.)

Shmiracles

Haha I just barely squeaked by on my programming course this semester too!
I’m grateful for the reminder that I’m a horrible student and that, for me, it’s best to learn in other ways …. I’m grateful the class is over : ) hah

Veronica

Absolutely! This year was a tough one, but there were still blessings. My little family is healthy, I was able to surpass the goals set for me at my job, and I enjoyed reading a lot (a whole lot) of books this year. I also loved all the time I got to spend with my husband and kids this year. We have so many inside jokes now, and I know they’ll make us laugh for years to come.

tea-sipper

YES there will never stop being the little things to appreciate.
