From Camellia Sinensis

This black tea comes from the luxurious gardens of Jeju Island, located just a few kilometers off the Korean coast. Formed by volcanic eruptions, Jeju is prime location for the Osulloc tea farms.

Leaning towards the more « atypical » side of our selection, the Jeju organic bears rich scents of dark chocolate. Its woody and mineral body (tree bark, forest floor) reveals fruity undertones and a finish that really steals the show: with its briny seaweed-like aromas, one can almost feel the maritime breeze.

Cultivar: Yabukita
Producer: Ferme Ossulloc
Altitude: 200m
Date of harvest: April 19, 2021

This is like a black tea mixed with salad greens. There is a lovely underlying sweetness as well. A very unique cup.

The description notes seaweed notes and maritime briney-ness, but I don’t get that. I recently had Coastal Oolong from MS, so perhaps that has swayed me since that was very ocean-esque. Though, this is my second cup of this one and the taste profile has been the same both times.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a Korean black tea before, and this is quite interesting.

It is surprisingly floral and sweet- like lilacs and honey.

There is a bit of a wet tree bark thing happening, which actually works really well with the soft floral notes.

I’ve been on the fence about this one with every CS order I’ve placed. Now I’ll be adding a sample in my next order!

Tea Travels: Greece. San Antonio Summerland, Mykonos. Good hotel. Weird location. Terrible tea. Couldn’t make it through my first cup. When we had some time later I steeped something better. This. The leaf is small to medium in size. Twisted tightly. Dark brown. The liquor color is amber and clear. We look out on donkeys grazing among the dry plant life. They have the most unique flowers here. Double and triple colors blooming on the same plant. It fills your mind with wonder like this tea fills your mouth. Smooth with astringency after 3 minutes. Smoky flavors along with ripe bark and roasted squash. And yet it is lighter than other black teas. Mykonos is a party island. It’s a lot of fun but to be honest my favorite part was visiting Delos. If you go you must visit Delos.

Gongfu Sipdown (2658)!

I’ve really enjoyed the different Korean teas I’ve tried produced out of Jeju, but the black teas have been particular favourites. This one starts a little more mineral and vegetal in its top notes, with a bit of a nutty and spinach-like flavour. However, I do find those leafy green notes pretty fleeting. The nuttiness, on the other hand, gets a bit thicker in the mid sip with undertones of cacao, dark and exotic woods, and a heady but sweet floral note that all slowly crescendo into a rich and nuanced composition of flavours. I would definitely buy this tea again, though it also inspires me to seek out new Korean black teas to experience as well. If anyone has some favourites, I would love the recommendations!!
