Mint Humbug Matcha

That charcoal-infused matcha really put my GI through the ringer today, so tonight I’m sticking to mint and ginger… and saw this mint-flavored herbal tea powder sampler. The last rooibos-based tea powder I tried from B&B I really didn’t like, because I didn’t like how the rooibos flavor came out in powdered form… but I blended this up in vanilla oat milk and it just smells very sweet and minty, like peppermint candy from the blend of the vanilla and mint aromas.

Mmm… I’m happy to say I’m not tasting that strong rooibos taste here! Maybe using a sweet milk is cutting through it, or maybe it’s just from the flavorings, I’m not sure. Minty and sweet; I do pick up the sticky sweetness of licorice root, which I know is one of those flavors a lot of people hate (I am not one of them, though). There is a little bit of a nutty flavor here as well (which I assume is probably from the maca/rooibos base) but it isn’t coming off as particularly earthy or herbaceous. And the powder frothed up nicely in the cup, too… Every now and then I’ll get a sip with a slightly powdery-feeling texture, but it isn’t really unpleasant, and definitely not that really awful sandy/gritty feeling I was getting from the Black Magic Matcha.

Redemption. I am really liking this one! If B&B’s tea powder tins weren’t so expensive, I would consider adding this one to my cupboard.

This one is quite popular based on the couple of people that rated it and to be honest I can see why. I mixed it into hot frothed milk and there is a lot of sweet peppermint here. However, I think I just don’t like rooibos “matcha” because I’m not loving this one. It’s the flavor beyond peppermint that I am not liking. This got tossed into the swap box.

Wow, this was incredible! I frother it up straight in some cold milk and it got so light and airy; almost like hand whipped cream! The taste fits perfectly – it’s really delicate, soft mint and creamy vanilla, with a hint of honeyed rooibos. I often struggle with mint flavours in matcha (green tea type or not) but this is one I think I can really get behind! Bit of a bummer it’s a holiday exclusive…

Bird & Blend Matcha Advent Calendar – Day 23

I’m not familiar with mint humbugs, so I had to look them up. Apparently a humbug is just a hard candy with stripes. I was surprised by the color of the powder – it’s paler than the other rooibos "matcha"s I’ve had from B&B, so I wondered if it’s made with green rooibos instead of red. But rooibos is actually the second ingredient in this powder (the first being maca), so I guess it’s just diluted.

It’s quite tasty. The mint flavor is sharp and refreshing, like a candy cane. I can taste a little bit of the rooibos woodiness. Otherwise it’s sweet and creamy. I have no idea what maca root tastes like, but I’m not really getting any other flavors here.

It’s lovely as a creamy candy cane latte. I would consider ordering some if it were actually matcha… :(

The Bonne Maman spread for today is Strawberry-Verbena (Fraise-Verveine) spread. I’m not sure how I feel about this one. It has an almost minty herbal flavor. I would expect it to taste more lemony. Anyway, the strawberry is nice but I’m not a fan of the added verbena flavor here.
