From August Uncommon Tea

Japanese green tea with rich barley

Tastes Like: hot crusty bread, sweet grass, macadamia nut
Feels Like: refuge from coastal winter elements
Comfort from the hearth while gazing at fog as it gently drifts over the sea. The odor of warm buttery country bread rises to your nose, tenderly warming your face. A faint note of macadamia and bits of crust browning on a brick oven floor linger on the tongue. Hints of sweet grasses spring forth to brighten and balance the thick, chewy texture. Come in from the cold.

Ingredients: japanese sencha tea, german barley malt
Contains gluten from barley malt

I’m reviewing another tea from the Here’s Hoping Traveling Teabox! (It’ll probably take me another week or so to finish typing up all my reviews from my notes.) I’m definitely not getting the “artichoke” flavor that others have mentioned, but that’s okay because I don’t think I go in much for vegetable flavored teas. What I mostly noticed about this one is that the green tea flavor is set off nicely by the grain, which adds a sort of nutty note even though it doesn’t really taste like nuts so it’s kind of difficult to explain. It’s quite interesting and really good, though! And I don’t think I’m just saying that because I’m hungry. :P However, I only steeped it for two minutes rather than the recommended five so maybe I wouldn’t like it at all if it was at full strength. Who knows?

Here’s Hoping Traveling Teabox – Round #5 – Tea #41
I can’t wait til this one is out of the teabox so I don’t hear that Cure song every time I see the name of this tea. :D Anyway, this is a nice green with a sweet nutty flavor that I was expecting to be stronger, like being hit in the face with an ocean wave. But it’s more like sweet macadamia nut. I had it a couple days ago, so not much else to say, but a fine green tea.

From the Here’s Hoping TTB

This was pretty good. I liked the rich nuttiness that you got in each sip. It worked really well with the green tea’s buttery smoothness. I could easily see getting more of this tea. Off to make another cup!

thank you beelicious this is an intriguing brew. I think it falls in to the category of not for me, but this is unique enough that i’m SUPER glad to have tried it. there’s a cooked bread, artichoke feeling to this one…i almost feel like i should be adding a pinch of salt to it..it feels much more like i should be eating this rather than drinking it lol.

thanks for sharing beelicious….it’s a unique tea, just not for me haha but for sure interesting to taste.

Fresh roasted artichoke hearts! Not getting much reminder of the sea— more like appetizers on my grandma’s patio in California farmland. So good that it is a struggle not to gulp it down. Wow. AU teas keep surprising me. I need more of this!

Second steep is artichoke leaves— the fleshy good part that you scrape off with your teeth. I don’t know why but this is making me so happy right now! Is this what tea drunk feels like?

I love artichokes, but in a tea? Very unusual. Obviously it works for you! I was curious about this one – I have to say the name and the description was intriguing, but not enough for me to go for it.

I would never have thought artichoke tea sounded good either! To be fair, others may not get an artichoke flavor— I think AU bills it as bread and grass. Definitely savory.

I never liked the idea of a tea tasting like vegetables, even though I love artichokes, spinach, etc. :)
