I have been loving the teas that I’ve been getting from the Satemwa estate in Malawi. The Zomba Steamed Green Tea is one of my favorites. It’s a sweet, crisp tea that is flavorful on it’s own so I thought that it would take nicely to a simple recipe. Something straightforward like blackberry.
I blended this single estate, fair-trade, Rain Forest Alliance Certified steamed green tea from Africa with organic freeze-dried blackberries from the Pacific Northwest. The result is a simple yet flavorful cuppa. Green tea meets blackberry. Simple, straight-forward and delicious.

This is a nice and pleasant fruity green tea. I’m not specifically tasting blackberry or even berry. I was expecting a bit of tartness but there’s nothing like that here. I’m sure this is due to the fact that this tea is nearly four years old. Still quite enjoyable though.

This tea was delicious. Drank it a bunch at work and thoroughly enjoyed it. It got kind of bitter when oversteeped, but when made properly, it was delightful – this is an excellent green tea for a base, and it carried the blackberry well. Could have used a bit of cream, but I know that wasn’t the intention here. The blackberry had faded a bit for this cup, but I did still enjoy it.
The blackberry flavouring in this is delicious- like some fresh creamy pastry bought and eaten right at the berry farm. A possible downside of this is it makes me wish it was one of 52teas’ full blown “Danish” blends instead of “just” a berry green tea. It tastes so close.
The Zomba works really well here by not intruding into the berry deliciousness with any strong veggie notes. This base does seem to pair deliciously with fruit flavours; I’m down for liking 2/2 of 52teas’ Zomba blends I’ve tried so far (more on the way)!

Love the scent of the dry leaf. It’s bursting with juicy blackberry, and it’s nice to experience real blackberry and not artificial juice crystals I get from a lot of fruit-flavoured teas. The tea leaves are an unusual, beautiful dark green, twisted and fluffy.
Steeped, this is absolutely lovely. The base is sweet, mellow, with no trace of vegetal notes whatsoever. And that blackberry flavour is consistent with the scent of the dry leaf. There is a layer of cream going on too, I swear. Like a heaping bowl of berries ‘n’ cream . Not sure whether that was intentional or not.
