A really odd combination.
The dry leaf aroma is very candy-like … reminiscent of what I might experience if I opened a bag of runts or nerds. Or any other fruity willy wonka candy, which seems appropriate since I know that here on Steepster, we’ve called Frank the Willy Wonka of teas.
And it tastes very candy like. Unfortunately, we’re talking my least favorite two candy flavors: I really dislike grape flavored candy (or sodas, or ice pops, or just about anything grape flavored. I don’t even really care for grape juice. I like the fruit. And only the fruit. And I guess … there are some grape teas that I like.)
And as much as I love banana flavored teas … I’m not crazy about this. I think that the sweet, candy-ish grape-i-ness together with the candy banana just … wasn’t … making me a happy tea drinker.
So, this one just may go down in history as my least favorite 52Teas blend. I guess it was bound to happen, right?
That said … it wasn’t horrible, it just … wasn’t my favorite tea. It wasn’t making me want to do the happy tea dance. But this tea is not horrible, I like the way the earthy notes of the shou mei seem to “ground” the candy-like flavors just a tad, making it a little less candy-ish.
A fair representation of banana and grape, but, just not my favorite cuppa.

This tea is just silly. It has a nice fruity and sweet white tea base with nice notes of (you guessed it) banana and grape. The dominate flavor to me is the grape with banana lingering in the aftertaste. The flavors are more on the candy side but light enough to where you can catch the white tea in action. I like this tea because it is different. Banana and grape are never in the same boat.. Which is disappointing becuase their obviously good friends!
I was looking forward to trying this new blend as good grape teas are hard to come by. The aroma of the dry tea screams both grape and banana and really speaks to the quality of the blend. Once brewed both these flavors continue to have a strong presence but work very well together and almost make a bubble gum or cotton candy like flavoring. Using the Shou Mei as a base was a great touch as it adds another fruitiness layer to the brew while cutting through some of the sweetness. The overall result is a wonderfully refreshing fruity tea that is great both hot and over ice. (… and I am so glad I snapped up a few extra pouches as this one is not going to last long in my house)
This is an old Frank era 52Teas blend – I got in a stash sale a while back from Starfevre I believe, and the bag was still sealed. I cracked it open today to transfer into a tin, and the smell was still pretty fresh and strong so I decided to make a cup of it.
It’s certainly not a pretty tea – this grade of Shou Mei is ROUGH to look at. However, it doesn’t taste too shabby – especially for being probably like five years old!? It’s all kinds of artificial though; like if someone mixed a grape and a banana scented Mr. Sketch marker. They would have used like twice as much of the banana, though. If you get past the intense artificial quality of the fruit notes, though, I think the banana is still quite delicious.
52Teas banana flavours have always been brilliant, regardless of whether or not Anne or Frank was the one blending…
