French Toast

Older tea, one of Frank’s. It was…okay. It had way too much cinnamon for my tastes. I guess that’s just not the way I make french toast. I wanted more eggy and less cinnamon, really. Meh.

This tea tasted different every time I tried it, and never quite like french toast. That said, I would happily sip it while watching a Toronto Maple Leaf ice hockey game, traipsing through the Yukon territory, or practicing my français in Montreal.

Well, the heat and much of the power has been off for the past several days chez nous— don’t ask. Today, finally and thankfully, a couple of lovely electricians just an hour ago resurrected that the bits and ensured that the furnace is now at full blast. Good thing too. I am quite sure that it is going to take me a week or more for my hands, seat, and thighs to thaw from this most serious deep freeze within.

So, tea, but of course. This cup is full of maple and custard. And gratitude.

I’m going to preface this by saying I hate French Toast – I’ve had multiple french toast teas and they’re really hit or miss, it depends on which flavors come out from the tea.
This one has a mild chai taste, I’m not getting much baked bread flavor but the black tea base is heavily apparent, not that I mind. It reminds me exactly of what I interpret the end of fall to taste like, a little Christmassy with the cinnamon and nutmeg flavors. It almost tastes like eggnog without the creaminess. Overall I actually like it.

Not rating as to not screw with those who actually like French Toast flavored teas.

I adore maple flavors in tea, so I had to give this one a try! Unfortunately, I think this sample must have been old and/or contaminated…the flavor was barely-there cinnamon with maybe the barest touch of maple on a flat black base. Withholding rating, since I don’t think I was tasting this tea at its best!

This tasting note is for the newer version of this tea (ingredients: black teas, cinnamon, calendula petals and natural flavors). I’m getting mostly cinnamon on a light base. Any toast notes are minimal, at best. I added a touch of sweetener to see if any of the other notes were amplified. Unfortunately, they were not. Maybe the toast notes were lost in the reformulation?? I’m happy to have sampled it. I do love black teas, especially in the morning, but I think I’ll be passing this particular blend on to someone else.

I’m not sure if this is from the reblends, as I don’t actually know what the new packaging looks like. Whoops. Sorry, 52Teas! But if the new packaging doesn’t look like the old 1.75 ounce pouches, then this is an old one. The flavor is okay. I wouldn’t necessarily think it is french toast. It might be a REALLY old pouch though, because it doesn’t even seem like the newer old black tea I don’t like. Even the cinnamon was barely making an appearance. Maybe it’s just the way I brewed it.

My first impression of this tea was not very good. All I tasted was black …Ceylon? I’m not very good at identifying black bases. Kinda bitter. As I let it cool down I experienced more of the flavors but not as much as I thought I would. I’m going to try this again tomorrow with some …honey or something added and see how it changes.

This morning I had to decide which of my new teas to have with breakfast, so why not one that already sounds like breakfast itself?

The dry blend smells like maple syrup, cinnamon, and sugar. It does remind me of a slice of French toast with all the trimmings! After brewing, I could already smell a strong, clear black tea base, which was a good sign. The flavor of the tea leans more heavily toward cinnamon and brown sugar, more like a snickerdoodle cookie than French toast, but I’m not complaining. The tea base is quite nice—with a bit of peachy sweetness and a strong, malty-bready undertone, giving it more of a toast-like quality. Thanks beelicious for the opportunity to sample some of 52teas’ creative blends!

I think I need to try some of these teas, particularly black blends, with milk…I’m not a big milk drinker but maybe almond milk could be nice!

Fourth tea today. Because I’ve come to the realization that I have too much tea in my stash now, I’m trying to try at least 4 teas a day. More if I start early enough or it’s something that I end up not being able to drink because of reasons. Lol.

Dry I get a cinnamon, spicy, vaguely reminds of french toast. But since I only put sugar and cinnamon on my french toast, I don’t associate maple with it. My Mom puts maple syrup on her’s though. Lol.

So maybe my palate is broken. Or just had it with all the tea I’ve had today because I don’t get french toast out of this at all. All I get is a cinnamon-y, maybe some other spice, tea. No bready/eggy/maple/whatever sort of flavors. I added some brown rock sugar since I felt it might’ve gone better than my usual Truvia and all it did was make it a bit sweeter cinnamon tea. Lol!
I don’t know what to think about this. /frowns/ I’ll probly end up tossing this in my swap/sell bin since I just don’t think this tea is for me.
