So, I’ve spent most of the day drinking good tea and eating delicious food which I’ve mentioned in some tasting notes today; a wonderful, lazy Monday. On top of that, since House is on Netflix now, I’ve been rewatching my favourite season (Season 4 – with the “Intern/Fellowship” Competition). It’d be pretty perfect if it weren’t for the mild, continuous tooth/gum pain. I think I need to go down some more Aspirin…

But anyway, now I’m drinking this as a cold brew! It’s been steeping in the fridge since I got up; so close to ten hours, but now it’s been strained and man is this refreshing. It’s a little more tart than it was the first time around (but it also had a longer steep time for the hibiscus to stew in), but still overall nice and mellow full of plump, juicy berry flavour! I feel like this is going to be gone before I know it.

Add in a touch of sugar, and you’d never know this wasn’t some new, “Berry Kool-Aid” type drink. It also perfectly contrasts the cheese/pineapple Quesadilla that I’m dipping into some red wine infused pasta sauce. Mmm!

That quesadilla sounds really good!

Seriously, that’s it – yummy.

Sipdown (177/179)…

Well, it’s not the sipdown I thought I was going to get in today, but it is a sipdown and I guess I’ll take it. I must say, I’m pretty heart broken this is gone now – it was a really delicious late night option, one I’d hoped to keep around for longer. But, with how tasty it is, this sipdown was inevitable. It simply had to happen.

We’ll be reunited again though; my future (when I run out of Boston) H&S order is building:

- Boston
- Wedding Tea
- Soba Cha

and possibly

- SoHo Blend

Someday!

VariaTEA

I just bought 4 oz of this tea through NayLynn. I am happy to share :)

Supposedly apples are good for cleaning the mouth and stopping gum infection, so I just finished off two – since the gums around my wisdom teeth on the right side are very inflamed and tender, and I don’t think just from them poking through (again). I’ve also been gargling salt water all day, and I’ve brushed my teeth three times since getting up.

Infection be damned!

Anyway, next batch of tea for my lazy Monday off! I added some milk to this (the last of the jug; about a tsp.), so what’s today’s cup of this taste like?

Marshmallow… Check!
Caramel… Check!

Umm, Licorice? Check…

Yup, that’s right – in addition to the other usual, yummy flavours in this blend I’m being punched in the face (well, maybe not punched – more like gently prodded) with some black licorice. Odd, unanticipated, but actually pretty good.

drank Boston by Harney & Sons

Ok, so I quite literally had a dream about this tea pretty recently and that meant that I kind of had to make a cup of it. You don’t dream about a tea (in a good way) and do nothing about it…

Thankfully, this cup (despite the fact I’m drinking the last half of it cold) lives up to my “dream cup” in flavour. It has sweet cranberry, and a smooth nuttiness, and loads of vanilla; and it’s just so rich and wonderful overall. This still reigns supreme as my favourite H&S blend!

Also, you all have to watch this video:

Too freaking cute!

drank Tiramisu Oolong by 52teas
16967 tasting notes

I’ve meant to try this for a couple days now, but sleep keeps derailing my tea drinking. Finally I made a cup of this for the afternoon, though – along with even more breakfast food! Cookie and Cream oatmeal; mmm!

I should mention I’ve only had Tiramisu a couple times, none of them recent. However, every time I have had it, I’ve really, really enjoyed it. That was a huge part of why I wanted to try this; the other part being I’ve never had one of Frank’s oolong blends and I was curious to try one. This had been on my wishlist for some time though, and I had mostly given up on tasting it – but then of course I was totally surprised by Dexter3657 who kindly added a really generous sample into a package she sent me!

So now that this is steeped up; I think it’s pretty fanastic! I absolutely get the flavour of tiramisu from this – to the point where I think I’d be able to blindly guess that’s what this is supposed to be. There’s coffee, and cream, and chocolate, and that spongey liquor soaked cakey goodness! And, for the first time I think maybe ever, I really feel like the marshmallow root is actually adding something to the tea. Usually, for me, marshmallow root gets pretty lost in translation…

Even better, while the flavouring in this is pretty divine, the oolong can hold its own too! Yum! It actually makes me really anxious to break into my sample of Caramel Apple Oolong, also from 52Teas, to see if that one is as amazingly yummy, though that wasn’t part of the line up of teas I made for myself today, so I’ll probably hold off on it…

Thank you Dexter3657 – this was a great treat today, and I look forward to the remaining cups I have left (don’t worry Cavo, I’m still sending you some too).

Dexter

You never know who has what lurking in their cupboard, and I don’t mind sharing when I can. Glad you enjoyed it!! :))

Frolic

Just curious why you marked it “not recommended”?

Sounds yummy.

Roswell Strange

Whoops – it’s supposed to be marked as recommended! Going back and editing that now…

Ok, now this cup is hitting all the right notes!

I really wish this wasn’t discontinued – I’d totally buy a full tin of this. It’s honestly the best black based rootbeer tea I’ve had, ever – and I think I’ve tried a fair number of them at this point. The rootbeer is clear and tasty, and the vanilla “float” part; oh, the vanilla “float” part…

There’s something magical about it; it’s thick and creamy and rich and perfect. This is exactly what I needed today, I just didn’t know it until I’d had a sip…

Ok, apparently I lied last night – when I went to measure out what I thought would be a sipdown it turned out I still had enough leaf left for one more cup, so I’ll finish this one off tomorrow most likely, for realsies.

Anyway, while this is certainly a step up from last night’s botched disaster – I still feel like this is kind of a let down for me. I mean, I get most of the tasting notes others are describing; spices like cinnamon, baked bread or pastry, a nuttiness, maybe a touch of butter – but regardless of that, this just seems a little bland. For my tastes, I think I’d like it better if it was richer. And all that said, there’s still something alarmingly familiar about it; I swear I’ve had another tea practically identical to this (but I want to say better, even though I can’t place what I’m reminded of).

It always sucks when you don’t love a Steepster favourite.

Oh well, like I said I still have one more cup so maybe that cup will really surprise me and turn my opinion around!

its OK if you dont love it. can i suggest 1/2 tsp of maple syrup? to bring out the flavs. also as it cools the flavors become bolder.

Stephanie

To each her own :)

Courtney

Aw, at least you got to try it. Apple Cinnamon Coffeecake from S&V somewhat reminded me of Brioche. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking of?

Tealizzy

Not my favorite either! You’re not alone!!

I’ve awoken from my deep slumber and now I want nothing but cup after cup of tea and delicious breakfast food, such as the poptarts I’m currently devouring.

I made this up as a matcha soda since A) we’re out of milk again and B) when I opened my matcha box in the freezer all I could smell was this one, despite it being double bagged. It was delicious enough that I instantly switched my decision of having Watermelon soda to making this one.

Prepared the usual way; except this time I didn’t add sugar because my right leg is all crampy, and I didn’t want to have to strain it getting the sugar out of the top shelf of the cupboard. You know what though? This still tastes AMAZING – it doesn’t need the sugar one bit to have an intense, yummy flavour.

Mmm! Perfect start to my morning/afternoon.

drank Birthday Cake by DAVIDsTEA
16967 tasting notes

Sipdown (178/180)!

This is backlogged from last night/afternoonish (sometime in the two hour time period I managed to wake up from my deep sleep, before collapsing back into it).

Well Birthday Cake, it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride – and you will always be a significant tea to me because you were my introduction to loose leaf tea, the first cup of loose leaf I ever tried, and this tin I’m finishing off was the oldest tea I happened to have in my cupboard. However, tastes change and lately you just haven’t sparkled as much as you did in the past.

At least I discovered you’re a fair bit better cold brewed (sorry for getting you hooked, VariaTEA) because that made these last few cups more enjoyable – and at least we’re not departing on bad terms anymore; just neutral terms. I feel like I’ve accomplished quite a lot in sipping you down though, and it’s a good feeling. Furthermore I’m excited that I’ve freed up your tin space and can now fill this tin with DT’s Creme Brulee which, in my books, is SO much better!

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
