an idea to improve steepster

is anyone upset about steepster being down a lot?

i have an idea:

why not pay 5$ month to have better upkeep service?

I know most will not like my idea but are there really any other options?

I’m on a site that charges $1 per month, I’m not opposed to that. However, for me, $5 sounds a bit steep…that’s $60 per year which can be a lot to some.

If you don’t mind me asking, which forum is that?

There could be a donation button?

+1 Every board I’m a member of has a Paypal button.

I am all in favor of a donate button!

I was actually thinking something similar. The monthly tea subscription is a bit steep for me (and I don’t live in the US), so I was wondering how else I could help support the site.

it’s a double edged sword: if we are forced to pay, people will stop using the site. if we allow donations, not everybody will donate

I don’t see how that’s a “double edged sword”. The success of social networking sites relies on a large, interactive user base and user generated content. I don’t think it’s possible to charge a monthly fee for a social networking site. You’d alienate a huge chunk of your existing userbase, deeply discourage new signups and the loss of community activity would likely drive away a lot of people who would contribute financially to the site.

I think donations are a fine idea. Of course not everyone will donate – donations are by their nature voluntary. Many people can’t afford to donate or don’t get enough value out of the site to want to donate, but there are those who will. And even people who never contribute a dime to a site still add value by being part of the community and creating content.

What do our administrators think? Would that make a difference with the spamming problem? I would be willing to pay a $1 or $2 per month.

+1 Me too! Especially if it stops the spammers. $12 a year sounds very reasonable… especially considering what most of us spend on tea. :-P

Seems the main issue is more of a server problem that spam might exacerbate (memory or process locking issues). I’d happily donate but I fear requiring payment for membership would scare people away. Steepster has been a great resource for me and I’d want to keep it free for everyone. :)

if this forum becomes pay-to-use, I’ll stop using it straight up.

Me too. I like my social networks free.

As much as I love it here, I’d have to say the same thing.

I didn’t want to rain on the parade, but I wouldn’t pay either. Even my use has decreased in recent months with the spam attacks.

Same.

Since it seems like part of our issues involve spammers, would it be possible to implement a CAPTCHA for new accounts creating threads and/or posting under x weeks old?
