Bumping up the rating on this one a little as it was nearly as bitter as the first time i had it. pretty sure i just over steeped it the first time. A decent assam but given all the others i have, I don’t think i’ll restock this once its finished. Not a bad tea but nothing special that warrants a permanent spot in the cupboard.
backlog!
I had this last night while friends were over. It’s an average cup of tea, nothing to write home about but it was a nice complement to the meal we had. I’d drink this again but it doesn’t need to be a staple in the house. I’m happy to have tried it though.
Oh wow! This might be my new favorite tea. I gave it a sip bare and decided that a bit of cream and turbinado sugar might nicely enhance it. It was such a complex but smooth cup. On first sip I caught hints of cocoa and spice which led to vanilla lingering on the palate. Entirely smooth with no acidity or bitterness. I gave it a second brew and I noticed I didn’t enjoy as much as the first. The second tastes more like a Ceylon. It is much lighter and smoother than the typical assam I’ve had, but I think it would be enjoyable anytime of day.
Preparation
SIPDOWN! yes that’s right…until i have to leave we’re going to see a bunch of these lol I planned out all my teas last night so that i can get to 190 or explode trying haha
Dropping the rating on this one a little since the last time i drank this as there’s an astringency here that i don’t like that much especially when comparing it to the other black im also drinking (just for you whatshesaid)
I really like the aroma of this tea and the initial sips, but then there’s a taste in the back end that isn’t all that wonderful and ruins the sip for me.
I have to say though, that this is why i love upton samples. They’re great value since even me and my giant cups can get 2-3 cups out of them and while the packages aren’t resealable, they keep the smells out very well with just a bit of tape to hold them closed. While i don’t love most of their flavoured teas (the tisanes are ok) i really like that i can try out a HUGE list of straight teas. I also love that they put the packaging date on the lable AND if you’re doing a shared order you can add the names to the labels so that when they arrive you just put the teas away according to the name on the label :)
Yeah, their website kills me, but the samples and the labeling are awesome. I love ordering like 20 samples and getting that big box in the mail. It’s like christmas since I normally have forgotten what all I added to my cart so each time I pull out a a tea I’m stoked all over again.
haha yeah their website is pretty old school ghetto but it’s great AND not sure if it’s still the case, but their brew baskets were the cheapest out there since they’ve been on sale since like christmas?
Hee- planning your samples is exactly what I would do. Hope you make it! It’s been fun watching your numbers drop.
lol well i aim to amuse. If i wanted to cheat, technically according to my steepster cupboard i’m at 186 right now…but there are 10 teas that i’m not putting into my steepster cupboard because they’re randoms from china…so 6 more to go!
Wow, I just visited the upton page, & I see what you guys are talking about. It’s really kind of overwhelming!
I had this today as well. I’m still suffering from jet lag so after my dr’s appointment this morning i opted to just work from home so that If i needed a short nap, i could take advantage of the beds in my place :) I tried sticking to blacks today to help keep me awake but i’m not sure it’s helping. I’m about ready to go to sleep for the evening – have been since about 1pm lol
Still enjoying this tea, still a relatively decent black that I could have whenever. It won’t be a permanent in my collection but it’s still been a nice tea to drink.
Wheee! First review! I’m enjoying this cup today. It’s not an overly strong cup of tea but it has a really nice range of flavours happening. There a touch of malt which turns into a soft rich black flavour with a hint of sweet at the end. Reading the description which refers to wine, i can see where that’s coming from.
So I have to say, nothing says YES PLEASE! Like a cup of cold brewed tea after a work out. It’s one thing to have water while i’m working out, but i really like getting to come home and pull whatever i’m cold brewing out of the fridge to have as an official end to my gym time.
This one is better cold than hot in my opinion :) I’ll have to remember that in the summer
Preparation
This is a bit of a weird tea. I’ve got a cold brew of the steepings going to see how that changes things but I don’t think i need to order this one again. It’s a neat mix of the blueberry and strawberry but that semi results in a vague “berry” like flavour that is neither one nor the other. There isn’t much astringency in this one, which is nice but i almost want the flavour to be sweeter, or stronger. maybe both. Still, glad to have this to check it off my list. only 12023978120938109283 more upton samples to try! :)
I’m still working my way through the first batch of sample packets I ordered from Upton; I’m thinking I like their black teas much better than their fruity ones.
I’m probably with you on that one. So far I am loving a lot of their black teas while their flavoured teas leave a bit to be desired. Still have a bunch to go through though before i’ll let myself order another box. I was pretty happy to get to pick up 3 brewing baskets with them on super sale though since it gave me an excuse to try a bunch of teas haha just wish their samples were resealable
tired and long day tomorrow..so keeping it quick tonight..i hope. This was early morning delicious tea and it was nice to revisit. Bumped the rating up a little because it as much tastier this time around than i remembered….that being said, i tried this a long time ago, and i know my tastes have changed.
SIPDOWN!
Looks like i should go through my upton samples since i could likely get through a few of these on the weekend to help lower my stash. And yes..I managed to get to less than 200 yesterday! Though I suspect i overloaded my system with caffeine because i had to stop drinking it later because i had chest pains lol.
This is a nice sample, your basic tasty black tea. While lovely, nothing i feel the need to re-stock. Instead I’ll maybe try some of the other samples and see how they fare. it’ll take me a few years to get through all of the upton blacks lol
I usually get to a point where just the thought of another cup of tea is a turnoff. But I try to not let it get that far, or else I need to lay of the tea for atleast a day!
While this is a nice cup of tea, it’s not up to my preferences for an unflavoured black. It’s certainly got a really nice smooth finish to it, but the overall cup is a little boring. I’m not picking up as many notes of flavour as I do with some of my other blacks. Now, this may be that it’s because it’s a yunnan, which i haven’t had much experience with, but i’ll passs on restocking this one. It’s a good tea, but there are others out there i’d prefer to drink. Would i pass this one up if offered? hell no :)
I’m upping my rating. The first time I tasted this, it was so different that I didn’t know what to think. But the smokey flavor has really grown on me over the last two weeks. I’ll definitely be ordering more of this to keep on hand.
Preparation
Very interesting. This is my first try and I’ve never had a tea that tasted smokey like this. When I took a whiff of the tea leaves, my first thought was that I mistakenly opened a package of beef jerky. The smell was very strong, so I decided to steep on the short end of four minutes to not overwhelm myself on the first cup.
I expected the taste to be unenjoyably strong, but it’s nice. The smokey taste is there in the back, but it’s not as overwhelming as I imagined. Next, I’ll give it a try after a five minute steep.
