I finally got a box of this last evening. So though I typically like to brew a pot of loose leaf tea on weekend mornings, and I just got several other fun teas from Tealuxe, I was excited to start the day with this one.

So now begins the experimentation to determine how I like this brewed. I started with a 3 minute steep and I’m having it plain. The flavor is exactly what I want out of a breakfast style tea, but stronger than I expected. I’m probably going to experiment with a shorter steep next time. I will definitely be experimenting with the milk/sweetener as well.

Yay for tea related projects!

I’m firmly convinced that PG tips can do no wrong. I tend to lean toward the strong and unleaded side, but I know that you’re watching caffeine a bit, so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with a short steep.

rabbysmom

Glad you finally got a box! I think I have you to thank for my now addiction to PG Tips in the am:) I’m now on my 2nd box. I do 8oz to a tea bag, add two sugar cubes and milk for a great flavor. Usually 3 to 4 minute steep, but just depends on if I loose track or not, lol. Usually I’m making 16 oz with 2 teabags to put in my big mug for the drive to work. This turns into a pinky brownish liquid, which makes no sense, but I have come to love that color because it indicates one good cuppa to get me going in the morning :) Are there Bi-Lo’s in NC? They are always putting PG Tips on sale for buy one get one free.

gmathis

I am absolutely envious of the grocery stores everywhere else except where I am … PG Tips only available (rather pricey-like) at health food/specialty import store. Tazo and Republic of Tea is as exotic as it gets around here. Sigh.

laurenpressley

@gmathis: I’m looking forward to the strong and unleaded version in the future!! I didn’t start seeing PG Tips in our groceries until somewhat recently… maybe they’re coming? If not, you can get deals on PG Tips through Amazon, even through the Subscribe and Save program (where you set it up to send you a recurring order for a discount): http://bit.ly/duEJrW There’s also a current special at Amazon: Save 25% on PG Tips when you enter code TIPSPG44 at checkout. Hope this helps! :)

@rabbysmom: Haha, I didn’t realize I was spinning off addictions! I might be late to it in the scheme of things, but I think I’m going to be right there with you. :) Awesome steeping/milk/sugar information, too. I’ll try that out next! I wonder what the pinkish color is about. It’ll be fun to see in person. There are a few Bi-Los around, but none near me. I was able to use a Harris Teeter VIC card to bring down the price a bit, though….

backlogging. So, call me crazy, but somehow I had never had this before. I went to a friend’s house last night and had several fun options. This and something from my shopping list, included. The other one required a specific brewing time and temperature (as best I recalled), and I couldn’t believe I still hadn’t had this, so I gave it a go.

Good stuff! It reminded me a lot of my precious Brattle Street Blend, and was a good strength. I think I’m going to get a box of this as my go to tea bag option in the future. (And will probably replace my Twinings with it.)

rabbysmom

Your not the only one- I have never tried this. Would this replace Twinings Irish or English breakfast? I’m trying to judge how strong the tea is.

laurenpressley

Hmm… I’m not a fan of Irish, all that much, so I haven’t tried the Twinings version. I was thinking of my English Breakfast….

rabbysmom

Ooooh, I love the Twinings English Breakfast so I MUST go get this tomorrow. I’ve also noticed a lot more PG Tips in regular grocery stores here in SC- they must be expanding their market in the US

laurenpressley

Ooo, if you do, I’d love to know what you think… I’ll look for your tasting note!!

Dan C

You liked it so much you gave it a 41? Bizarre.

Something I’d drink every morning, here it’s so easy for me to get these it’s very usual to drink it. It’s just a nice cup of tea. Don’t steep for too long, it is perfect for around 1 min.

Back home in Liverpool, a box of PG or Tetley (or both!) are in nearly every household. In a pinch, I’ll take it if Tetley isn’t available. I love my tea strong, dark and bitter so the milk and sugar blend well without overwhelming the brew. In my house, PG Tips can’t do that with only one bag. Tetley, with their ingenious pouches, do just fine. The PG Tips taste is famous across the pond, but I haven’t purchased it in years because there is so much more tasty tea available in the Great White North.

This tea is simply superb, It has a smooth taste, refreshing and can be taken at anytime of the day…I have searched high and low for stock and there is simply none about… PG or is it UNILEVER appear to have replaced this with their new range of Fresh Teas…unfortunately they come a poor second to special blend… I have now reverted to Twinnings 1706 blend which is detailed as a strong traditional tea… we find this blend quite delicious . PG / Unilever have failed to support their customers, they could have given us warning to stock up on Special Blend, or offered it on line through selected retailers .. but to remove it completely sends out the simple message – we do not care about our loyal customers !!! If any of you are Unilever shareholders write immediately to your chairman .. and demand Special Blend’s return.

Definitely NOT cool that there was NO WARNING!! Have been getting it from World Mkt for a few yrs now, and suddenly ……. !! :( :( :( Regular PG TIPS is NOT the same … more bitter. :)
BRING IT BACK, PLEEEASE.

As far as I’m concerned this is the best tea that pg tips has ever put in a little bag! Why oh why did they stop producing it?
I’m at a loss to find a suitable replacement. Is there any body feel the same as me? Any recommendations on a good substitute?

I agree, I just found out about this. This is my favorite tea and the only one I drink in fact. I’m very upset about this.

This is my favorite basic black tea. I use it for morning breakfast w/ milk, sun tea with herbs, and anytime I need to add a black tea to a drink. Being from the South (US) and having grown up on Lipton and Luzianne, I get flak for drinking a commercial English black tea. However, it is superior in many ways. It makes great sun, iced, or hot tea. There is no other basic black tea like it.

PG Tips. Again. Seriously. We buy it in boxes that are bigger than my head. Where does it all go? Where has the last year gone? In between the 65+ hour workweeks, the trip across country for my grandfather’s funeral, the new job, the trip across country for my brother’s wedding, there is a steady rhythm of caffeine jolts that keeps everything moving.

That’s PG Tips: not fancy, not delicate, but reliable: quick to steep, able to stand up to an omelet (even an omelet covered in tomatillo salsa) consistently delivering needed energy.

Let’s hear it for the “best supporting actress”, the janitor, the viola player, and PG Tips: all those who make life better from the background.

This stuff is solid. The flavor is very strong, thick, maybe a bit heavy. The caffeine punch is stronger than the other teas I’ve got in the cupboard. It stands up to milk, sugar, and probably bullets.

I think this is the Lipton of England. On the one hand, its incredibly easy to oversteep and is somewhat bitter. A three minute steep is definitely too long unless you are adding cream and sugar. On the other hand, it delivers the goods: specifically, caffeine. It also has a robust, Assam like flavor that stands up well to heavy breakfast food.

You really need to use boiling water with this one. Using 195 degree water just makes the tea laugh at you and taste like wooden stirrers. Great with (lots of) milk and sugar.

Amazing! Truly an excellent everyday tea- easy to make and doesn’t steep for too long, so it’s easy to throw in a mug and go! It’s a bagged tea with the expectations of a loose leaf: it’s got a great flavor, but you have to respect the tea- not like other bagged teas that you can leave in a mug for hours. I’ve found that I definitely have to keep an eye on this tea as it’s steeping (I’m usually pretty good about using a stopwatch, which helps!), but if brewed for the right amount of time it really delivers! Definitely my favorite black tea :)

I drank this at home before visiting London. It’s a good, strong black tea. In London, mostly I found Twinings or Lipton. I did see it sold at a convenience store with a sock monkey, and really wish I bought it! So cute.

Just a quick note on my experience of this tea.

I do enjoy this tea. It is similar to America’s Lipton but stronger in character and flavor. This is definitely a morning cuppa. This tea is malty and assertive; it has a full mouth feel and lingers awhile as an aftertaste. PG Tips can most certainly handle milk and sugar even though I do not use either (may try it someday). This is one tea that I will reuse the teabag knowing that it can stand a second infusion. I feel the next time, the flavor will mellow somewhat but none less enjoyable.

The color of the liquor is a deep amber brown.

If you like your tea strong and want something to wake you up in the morning other than coffee, than PG Tips is the tea for you. I would recommend this tea.
