Today is my husband’s birthday – Happy Birthday David!
I spent the morning making this:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6504932
and then made us a nice pasta lunch. After lunch I showed him the finished cake and he insisted we have a piece right then and there!!!! One must always listen to the birthday person!
I made a pot of this to have with it – I love the way vanilla tastes with chocolate cake. It was so perfect. A creamy dreamy vanilla taste, good tea, and a trail of vanilla beans in your cup afterwards ♥
Preparation
Had a delicious breakfast of this tea taken plain and a slice of pumpkin pie! HIGHLY recommended pairing :) I am surprised how much I adore this tea sans additions. It’s a good tea flavor and excellent vanilla (not too sweet! this goes sweet and creamy with milk and sugar, but plain it’s true and balanced).
We are having a food day at work today to celebrate our Interim Registrar becoming our Registrar! I made French yogurt cake with a Cointreau glaze – I’m thinking boozy = afternoon. ;) I wonder if Earl Grey de la Creme with the cake is too over the top? Nah!! I’ll report back this afternoon :)
Preparation
No! That does sound good! I don’t think I’ve had a marshmallow in a decade! Do you make marshmallow creme from marshmallows or do you buy it? (I know – I live under a rock!)
So unfair! Maybe this means you should make another for this weekend. That is what it would mean at my house.
I think I am moving on to molasses cookies today :) We are supposed to go on a hike tomorrow and I think they will pack well for the picnic!
I wonder how this tea compares to Harney and Sons Vanilla Black. Have you had it? I have some, and it doesn’t taste like Vanilla Comoro to me. It seems like this is a little less caramel flavor, but it has been a long time since I have had it. Since I have a whole tin sitting there, I guess I should brew some tomorrow!
I haven’t had Harney’s but I’ll send you some of this so you can do a Scientific Test :) I don’t think this GM one tastes like Comoro – the tea flavor is more pronounced and no caramel flavors. I think Kusmi’s Caramel tea actually tastes more like Comoro but alas, caffeine!
One more day of vanilla ♥
I brought this one into work to try plain and oh! swoon!
The tea is rich, smooth, and perfect. The vanilla lends sweetness and creaminess without milk or sugar. I am in complete and total vanilla happiness! Pairs beautifully with breakfast (multigrain bagel with cream cheese).
Second steep weak but drinkable – note to self – try a pinch of fresh leaves to see if it will liven it up.
Preparation
An almost-afternoon tea break to top off a big home cooked brunch of poached eggs with savory parmesan, oregano, and black pepper popovers. This is one that both I and my husband love, but isn’t that popular on Steepster! I find the tea and vanilla well balanced, and with a little half and half and sugar it’s a great treat…almost like having yet another baked good!
Preparation
Happy May Day :)
I was craving this one tonight. It’s the gentlest, quietest of the vanilla teas in my collection. The tea itself is very mellow, and the vanilla is creamy and sweet. The tiniest splash of milk and a scant half teaspoon of sugar makes it dreamy. I find it delightful, especially in the evening, surrounded by books, a cat and a dog :)
Preparation
After my asparagus trauma I needed a tea that was, well, vanilla! I picked this – the most gentle vanilla in my collection. It did not disappoint. I drank it sitting on my couch with graham crackers like I was 5 years old and never knew there was such a thing as a tea that tasted like asparagus. It is also very forgiving – I oversteeped it a minute too long because I had to wash my cat’s feet* and it tasted just fine – definitely perfect at 4 minutes but very drinkable at 5. Not bitter, just strong.
*My cat Marty is 20 (!!!) years old and is a bit senile and he has the strangest things stuck to him sometimes!Preparation
Morgana – Yes – it’s amazing. My household is all geriatric animals – a 20 year old cat and 14 year old Beagle doggie. They are both the best old men!!! I love them so much. They cuddle each other on the couch!
mrawlins2 – I hope so too. :) They are so mellow and loving when they are old.
I currently have 3 cats. One is 7 and the two others are 6 (litter mates). Hard to believe they’re already as old as they are, seems like just yesterday I could hold one of the younger ones in one hand. They grow up so fast [insert sappy, sentimental sigh and sniffing sounds here ;-)]
Y’all are making me sad that I don’t have cats yet. Morgana, if you want a perpetual dose of kittens, may I recommend the IBKC? http://www.theittybittykittycommittee.com/2009/07/bathtub-ping-pong-ball-kittens-hours-of.html
Tea Bird – what an adorable site! As a person who visits Cute Overload every day
it is much appreciated!!!!! :)
Both those websites are SO cute. The little kitty in the pumpkin looks like my cat when he was a baby…awww!
Aw, poor kitties with odd things stuck to their feet! My 19yo has the same problem – except instead of odd things it is usually gross things. But we won’t think about that!
Tea Bird – Thanks for sharing that adorable site! The bookmark for it is going right next to CO for those rougher work days where cuteness is required!
Auggy – Marty is sometimes gross too! Last night it was leaves and fluffy spring seeds that the dog brought in though, thankfully (Marty is 100% indoor cat). He stopped grooming himself and he has food on his nose every single meal time. He has to eat wet food because he only has 5 teeth! The worst though is when he is not careful in the litter box. I bought him a special one with lower sides which makes it easier on his old back legs but some days are better than others.
Creamy vanilla and good tea combined for a comforting sunday evening cup. I feel like I could drink cup after cup of this one (but I limited myself to two!) Delightful with Pepperidge Farm cookies – I can’t decide if Brussels or Geneva is my favorite. :)
Preparation
Mmmmmm! I really like this one! I love the creamydreamy vanilla they used and the taste is a great balance between the vanilla and the tea. I would definitely love a tin of this. On the site it says it’s great with buttered toast for breakfast, and I really wish I saved my sample to use for exactly that purpose. Now that I taste the tea, it sounds like an absolutely perfect pairing. Ah well, I will have to suffer until I get a tin!!!
Preparation
So where would this one fit in the cupboard? WIth Jackee and Thomas or with Florence and Marco Polo?
Florence has hinted at Madagascar Vanilla being her lady-in-waiting when she comes into the cupboard. MV is so nice and gentle and agreeable – it looks like a done deal!
Sample 4!
After the smokiness of Jackee Muntz this morning, I felt the need for something with some sweetness, and this sounded good to me. I was a bit worried about the strength of the licorice taste, but I do like licorice. I just wasn’t sure I’d like drinking it. :P
The leaves smelled nice and licoricey and sweet, and perfect for the mood I was in.
Thankfully, the tea itself had just a hint of licorice flavor combined with an overall freshness and sweetness.
This kind of tastes like pizzelle with anise, but a bit less bakey. :P I like!
This isn’t a tea I would drink regularly, but it’s great for today! :)
Preparation
I got my grandmother’s pizzelle iron when she died but it was already rusted from not being used for a few years. Once I master her ravioli (ravioli – 2, JacquelineM – 0!), I will have to get a pizzelle iron so I can make her pizzelles! They were so good and I miss them.
Ooo raviolis! Yeah, they’re hard. :( My mom’s got a pasta roller attachment for her mixer that we’ve had success with, though. That and LOTS of flour so the dough doesn’t stick to everything in sight are our keys to ravioli success. (My great grandmother’s awesome, awesome recipe! So much work, but sooo worth it.) Pizzelles can be a pain too, but also worth it, and it’s been a while since I’ve had them, so I miss them too!!
GM Sampler | Tea 7 of 31
White Ginger | http://bit.ly/cScCEi
All Together Now | http://bit.ly/cHWS3X
I drank this the other day amidst a rather frenzied slew of schoolwork and…it was a really strange tea. It could be that I should have let it sit longer, but reading the other logs I’m not sure that would have done much.
The flavor was there, though it was extremely light and it was almost more…textural than flavorful. It felt like the ginger was trying to shout, “I’M HERE! I’M HERE!” but it showed up with a lost voice and a box of tissues.
The feeling it created was almost on the way to tingly, but it was softer, not unlike ginger ale that hasn’t quite gone flat. I’d call the sensation shimmery, and the swallow was clean and fresh. It would have been fully enjoyable, if a bit devoid of taste, but then this mucky aftertaste that followed it. The aftertaste, while soft like the rest of the tea, killed the diffused sparkly quality of the body of the tea like it was splooting [technical term] it with mud.
I was able to pick out some notes of hay that I believe were coming from the white tea, but that was pretty much all I was able to get out of this tea other than the weird smothered ginger taste. It wasn’t horrid by any means, and if it weren’t for the bummer-inducing aftertaste I’d consider getting more, but I won’t be buying this one.
Preparation
No. 3 of my sampler! I was REALLY excited to try this, ’cuz it just sounded sooooo good.
The leaves smell sweet and caramely, but not overly so. There’s still definitely the scent of earthy tea under there. The combination smells really yummy.
The tea itself… has an odd, slightly bitter aftertaste. It’s possible I steeped for too long. The package said 2-3 mins, and I did 3, so this could have been my own fault. But aside from that, it has a nice, lightly sweet flavor that I really enjoy. The caramel/sugar flavor does not overpower the oolong, which I’m really happy about! I’m definitely a fan. Overall, I’d have to say it tastes earthy but sweet.
Perhaps I’ll have to add this to my collection (and not oversteep it next time)! :)
Preparation
Second Golden Moon sample!
The leaves of this tea smell like pear and flowers. I didn’t really get a honey sense from it. In any case, the scent was so strong, I was a bit afraid of what it would taste like!
The tea itself tastes mostly like pear juice. The black tea gets hidden behind that flavor, though it does temper the juiciness, I’m sure. Still not really getting honey from this, but the pear really comes through. The flowers, which I thought were a bit strong-smelling in the dry leaves, are just a hint behind the pear. This is also a very sweet tea.
Overall, I’m not wowed by it. It tastes a bit too much like juice and not enough like tea for me. :\
Preparation
I was visiting my mom today, which meant coffee, coffee, coffee!! Now that I’m home, I wanted to relax with a cup of tea, but I’m already climbing-up-the-walls-caffeinated. I thought this sweet and mellow tea would fit the bill. Ahhhhhh. Exotic elixir! Where are the peeled grapes ;) I just love the melon flavor mixed with the almost buttery white tea. A real afternoon treat.
I have to hustle on to some chores after this hot cup, so I put the used leaves in my pitcher with a pinch of fresh leaves and some water for a cold brewed iced tea. I know this one is good for multiple infusions and I just hate to waste em! I think I’ll give it a wee bit of honey when it’s ready to drink.
Preparation
I liked this one a lot and am planning to purchase a full-sized canister once I am off my tea lock-down. It resonates in my memory. Que de delicacée!
Cofftea – Hmm – maybe I’ll add a few cucumber slices next time if I wind up liking it iced. I keep hearing how refreshing cucumber water is, and this would be even better!
Doulton – This is one I had to buy a full tin of too :) Very unique! I’m not a huge fan of white teas, but this one, and 52 teas black currant are my favorites.
Pouring rain, sick husband, paper to write. All things pointing toward choosing an afternoon tea on the sweeter side, and capable of multiple infusions. We are on #2 right now. Both full of gentle white tea flavor with no bitterness, and a light melon deliciousness. I love it! I want to try this iced once it gets hot out.
Preparation
I couldn’t figure out what kind of tea I wanted today! Well, if truth be told, I would have wanted Sugar Carmel Oolong again if I had any more! But since I do not – I thought I’d give another Golden Moon sample a try.
1st steep – 3 min. Delicate and delicious!!! It seems I’ve found a white tea that I love! When they say it’s flavored with “sweet melon nectar” they are not kidding! I feel like I am drinking a rare nectar of the gods. This tea makes me feel as if I should be laying on a chaise lounge being fanned, and offered peeled grapes and such, not sitting at my desk in snowy Philadelphia!!!! The flavor is not cloying or overly sweet – it’s absolute perfection to my taste buds.
2nd steep: 4 min – Less melon, more white tea flavor. Still a great cup of tea. I’ll keep to 2 steeps though.
Golden Moon Getting a Tin Scorecard: White Persian Melon, Kashmiri Chai, Sugar Caramel Oolong
:)
Preparation
Interesting, interesting.
Mine are Coconut Pouchong, Sinharaja + Honey Pear, but I wouldn’t mind getting a tin of the first two. Haven’t had the last one yet so I can’t say for sure. Now I’m interested to know what everyone else wants a tin of (from Golden Moon).
Ricky – I keep reading everyone’s notes after I log each sample and it’s so interesting to see who loved what, who loathed what, etc. This sampler is just too much fun!
This one didn’t do it for me, mainly because I hate the taste of melon. Although it really came close to being delicious, regardless of the melon! Both chais are awesome in my book. :)
My Golden Moon sampler came! Yaaaay! :D I’m drinking this one this morning, because I need some caffeine. :P
This smelled so good when I opened the bag! Unfortunately, I’m a bit disappointed by the tea itself, as I like the aftertaste more than the tea. Based on the scent, I was anticipating a much richer taste, but I do enjoy the sweet vanilla aftertaste.
Preparation
Very nice for a Ceylon (but I have to say I did like Andrews and Dunham’s Ceylon better – it had more pizzaz despite it being a Ceylon. I keep wanting to type Cylon – but I won’t go there!!). This could be because I like milk and sugar in my black tea, and this tea just didn’t stand up to it in the way I like. I guess that’s why I am an Assam and Panyang Congu type of gal!
Oh! and this is tasting note number 100 for me :) Neat!
Preparation
This is actually what I just finished in my own cup, actually. The more I drink it the more the molasses and berry they tout seem to come to the front for me. I tend to only ever use turbinado or rock sugar anyway, but using the turbinado definitely beats out any other sweetener with this tea, for me…it underlines some of the flavors already there. Also, the cylon thing made me giggle.
Ha! yea I have been saying it Cylon for a bit now….not sure how to break the habit (the tea leave look like humans now?)
AmazonV – I looked in my tea cabinet and said – OMG! Is Marco Polo really a Cylon!?! Is Florence a Cylon? Are Jackee Muntz and Thomas Sampson actually Cylons coming into my tea cabinet to wreak havoc and
- WHO IS THE FINAL CYLON!?!?!!?
and what was Starbuck(s) !!?!?!?!!?
:) the final Cylon is lurking in your cabinet!!!!
Man, other than Starbucks the green siren of coffee I couldn’t tell you what she was, the ending broke my poor little brain…
I just had this one Iced today I didn’t care much for it hot. I know it won best ICED tea so I kept that in mind and since it’s nice and sunny I decided to make a pitcher of this iced and wasn’t disappointed of course when I make iced tea I add sweetner (in this case agave nectar) and I enjoy this tea much more! Yea!!
Okay so I read all the reviews and was impressed by it’s award and decided to order Golden Moon Coconut Pouchong I was so excited to get it in and when I opened it to smell it it smelled wonderful. I will start by saying I have never had “pouchong” I love me some oolongs and I love coconuts so I thought hey I can’t go wrong. My first sip and I think buttery and almost a salty taste to it and as I continue on I realize that what I am drinking tastes just like movie theatre popcorn. I find myself disappointed I was looking for a sweet coconut feel but this is more hardcore like unsweetened coconut water but I just can’t stop thinking that it tastes just like popcorn with butter on top. Not my cup of tea. I have read other reviews on GenMai Cha (I think) and they describe a popcorn taste well it never appealed to me and now I am left wondering if Gen Mai Cha tastes like popcorn how does this too not taste like popcorn? Hmmmm…..
Having a very quiet afternoon in the office – the quiet before the storm! Tomorrow is Commencement, and one of my jobs is to give out diplomas each year!
I thought some tea would make the down time enjoyable, plus I could go for something sweet :) This is hitting the spot. Carmel corn date tea. Two nice steeps today. Now that I’ve had some naturally sweet oolongs, I think I prefer them to this (and I was crazy about this when I first tasted it!!). I’m going to lower the rating a bit – I think it’s now a solid 85. Delicious, and I’ll enjoy every curlywavycrazy leaf, but I rather have an Oriental Beauty or Dragon Ball!
Preparation
I was trying to arrange my tea tins into some semblance of order, and my husband came over to sniff at the tins. He loved the smell of this one, so I made a pot. Mmmmmm. Yummy oolong and burnt sugar. In no way cloying. I usually have this one at work, but I’m finding it’s a great lazy sunday tea. I am going to keep the leaves in my teapot and keep brewing throughout the day!
EDIT: After writing this tasting note, I realized that I had two papers to finish – no way was I having a lazy sunday! So I threw some water over the leaves and cold brewed it until dinner time. It’s very tasty cold! Sweet and a little nutty, a little floral. I prefer it hot, but if I ever get busy and can’t do more hot steeps, I will certainly do this again! This tea is too good to not take advantage of the multiple steeps :)
