Have you heard about the new tea in town? She’s a looker alright: dark, robust, and seductive, with a heart of gold. And you didn’t hear it from us, but she’s even better with a little booze. She’s a luscious black tea, with deep caramel flavour from dried golden mulberries and spicy warmth from orange peel and cinnamon. Take her apple picking. Bring her to Thanksgiving dinner. Sit with her by the fire. You’re going to want her by your side all fall.
DavidsTea is a Canadian specialty tea and tea accessory retailer based in Montreal, Quebec. It is the largest Canadian-based specialty tea boutique in the country, with its first store having opened in 2008.
My boyfriend had to pick this one up, yet here it lingers, unfinished a year later. I find he likes much darker, headier teas than I do, so that’s why I can’t really stand making a cup/pot of this tea when there are others around that I know I will enjoy far more.
It also has a really odd scent to it, considering its name. Caramel Spice? I’d say… Fruity citrusy spice, to be honest. I don’t taste any hints of caramel, and to me that’s deeply disappointing. And I find the spices kind of shock my throat into feeling a little sore – like I’m on the brink of a cold. Not particularly pleasant, and a bit odd.
Also, I’m not sure what redeeming quality mulberries have in teas – I feel like they’re dragging this one down.

First cup, brewed just over the suggested minimal steep and drank clear, was too strong in the flavour to the point where it wasn’t as pallatable as I’d like. Cut with milk and with sugar added, however, and the good points of the flavour were able to come through. Not bad in the end, when served with milk and sugar, but that first cup ruined it for me, I must say.
I might re-try this, keeping the milk-and-sugar knownedge in mind and seeing how it tastes then so I can better understand how the tea tastes when done in a way that compliments it, but my idea of a good cuppa is still one that is great with or without additives. So, this is not amongst my best teas ever, I’m afraid.

It is a very rare tea that has me gifting away my entire bag without even brewing it twice, but this was it. I went in hoping and expecting a slightly spicier version of Creme Caramel and got . . . I’m not sure, possibly a clove patch sprinkled with orange juice and dirty feet water?
The person I gifted it to enjoys it, so it has found a better home. Best wishes to it.
Based on the description, I really wanted to like this one. And yet, I found it totally underwhelming, even a bit off-putting when I smelled it in the store. Anyway, I got a sample with my order, so I figured I should give it a go.
And meh. There really is a strong orange/citrus presence to this one. I don’t know what mulberries taste like (But their leaves are lovely – thanks Mulberry Magic!), but I’m pretty sure they didn’t make or break this tea. I mostly taste citrus with a spice background, and a hint of caramel. Like if I really think about it, I can taste caramel maybe.
So yeah. Not so much on this one.

I love mulberries. It took me a while to work that out, but this is the third mulberry tea I’ve tried recently, and now I’m sure. I used 1.5 tsp of leaf, and gave it 4 minutes in boiling water. No additions. It smells gorgeous, as in “fill the whole kitchen” gorgeous. Rich and caramelly, a little citrussy, a touch of cinnamon. Very seasonally appropriate, although I’d drink a tea that smells this good all year round.
Fortunately, it tastes equally good. It’s almost like drinking a cup of hot liquid caramel. Perhaps because caramel is one of my favourite things, I’ve always found it hard to find teas that replicate the flavour accurately. Maybe I’m a little fussy, but no worries here. This one ticks all the boxes. Caramel is the main flavour, but I can also pick up a citrussy flavour that’s almost reminiscent of clementine, and a fairly delicate smattering of cinnamon in the background. The cinnamon here reminds me of Glitter and Gold, although that’s a completely different flavoured tea overall. The caramel here is definitely the star, and that’s how it should be. A yummy pre-bedtime treat on a cold evening!
Currently drinking this tonight while typing this review. The fragrant notes and the warmth of the cinnamon really work to make this tea perfect for the turn of the season. It was one of my favorites next to Pumpkin Chai from the fall collection. Suffice to say I stocked up on this one. The mulberries really lent well to provide that caramel taste and I loved that fact.
I’ve tried it once…and I’m kind of glad I only purchased 25 g since my first experience with it hasn’t exactly been positive. I steeped it a little longer than expected – the result – bitter, bitter, bitter bleh. Tried to sweeten it but no go. I’m going to try steeping it a little shorter next time but I don’t think this is going to turn into a go-to tea anytime soon. Wasn’t even able to finish off half of a cup.
