Dinjoye Estate Assam

Whoa…so…this is not going to be a particularly coherent tasting note since this.is.so.freaking.good.

Like really. I don’t even know what I’m tasting. All I know is it’s addictive. I guess if I had to choose some flavors, I’d say malty with a mellow sweetness at the end like I would expect from maybe dates or figs.

It’s so ridiculously comforting. This is going to be the perfect everyday fall/winter tea for me, which means I’ll need to order from Butiki again to pick up more :) I’m definitely okay with having an excuse to order again!

First tea of the morning! This sample came from boychik. I’ve been wanting to try more Indian Assams, since at this point most of the ones I’ve tried have been Taiwanese. For some reason, I feel the need to systematically “figure out” different regions of tea. :P Anyway, these leaves are somewhat broken, and they’re about half golden and half dark chocolate brown. Dry scent is mild malt with a touch of sweetness. I steeped a teaspoon of leaf for 3 minutes at 200 degrees.

Mmm… aroma. I can smell strong malt and bread with a touch of honey, and something that makes me think “creamy”. Yum, this is a lovely tea! For some reason I’m always intimidated by the concept of Assam, as it’s generally described as strong or needing milk to mellow it. This one’s not overly strong at all! I mostly taste malt and baked bread, but there’s also a definite raisin or fig note to it that makes my mouth happy. A touch of astringency, but not enough to bother me. Also, there’s a touch of honey and some oats, especially in the aftertaste. Yums!

This is the other sample Stacy picked out. Dry, it smelled nicely like malty chocolate. Brewed, I get more of a baked bread scent. The flavour is lighter than expected, with some fruit and sweet potato notes. It does have some baked bread as well. Now it tastes a bit like raisin bread, which I really like. Praise Yavanna!

I had to have a Butiki tea in honor of Stacy’s birthday yesterday! Happy birthday, Stacy! I hope it was a good one. Keep doing the awesome you do! I have some samples to try yet, and this is one of them. Sadly, an assam means more tomato soup for me. I really wish I would have tried these before my tastebuds changed! All assam means all tomato, all the time. There is something special here that makes it unlike other assams though but its hard to tell what that is: a flavor I haven’t noticed in any other teas. Sadly, none of those flavor notes that others have noticed for this tea are making themselves known to my tastebuds, but I feel like they once would have. It’s too bad as this one has all my favorite flavors. Otherwise, there is a little baked bread and a bite to it. I think all of these assams taste like iron to me now. Odd. It’s going to be my mission this week to try a few not-new-to-me assams and see if they are the same. I wouldn’t think this would be a good base for Butiki’s new chocolate blend, but I guess I should try that one before saying that. I should have sipped one of my favorite Butiki teas on the 25th!

This tea is so good ! it is strange because this is an assam but it has some distinctive notes of Darjeeling (to me !)

I screwed this one up too. Sorry Stacy :( I’m taking all your beautiful teas and making them into cups of hot messes. It was astringent and bitter, with perhaps some malt going on and no other flavours really. This was a sample….I may just order an ounce next time, to give it a real chance.

Tea of the morning… yum! I must live in one of the only places in the US where it’s cold in the middle of August. Our summer usually comes around September – October and I am definitely looking forward to that!

Looking for a job is scary, but I have a new motto as of this morning: Fear is only a feeling!

Anyway this is a great morning tea, assams are one of my absolute favorites for waking up. This morning I’m getting some notes of sweet potato and light tobacco. This is good with a bit of coconut sugar. Now off I go to make a phone call I got about my resume :)

Sipdown!!

Thank you Sil for sharing this with me. I have friends visiting for a week from New York and so this morning when a friend asked for plain tea, I have her a choice of a number of straight blacks. This is the one she settled on and tbh this cup is much better than the last which means it is a great way to say goodbye. There is a hint of dryness but once I get past that there is rich caramel and notes of earthy sweet potato. A very nice cuppa to start the morning.

Jummy breakfast! Medium strong assam with a good amount of sweet malt.
Second cup was full of ripe fruit.

One last tea before bed, so to speak. I had wanted a good tea to just sit and sip at while I play a little D3 before bed. Unfortunately this didn’t work out too well. The longer it sat the more bitter it got. Actually, it was kinda bitter at the very beginning. Maybe I overleafed it since I don’t remember it being like this when I first tried it? Probly since I was kinda lazy and eyed the 1/2 tsp from a full tsp. Meh. I probly shouldn’t’ve had tea this late anyway. XD
