Tea of the Week for January 4, 2021!
Over the course of the previous two months, I didn’t have a featured reblend – so, this month, I have two! This reblend is a bit unique in that it’s not a flavored blend – but it’s an energizing cuppa that is sure to get you revved up for the day.
Some time ago, I was contacted by a Zoomdweebies customer asking me where he could buy this blend – or something similar. I contacted Frank to find out more about the blend & he pointed me in the right direction.
This is a blend of Assam leaves (CTC & BOP) that will energize you. It is a robust black tea – rich & malty. It’s also remarkably smooth & not bitter (which I love!) Of course, it’s VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free.

Part of me feels a little like producing this blend is a bit like cheating – but I got over it after I tasted it – because it’s really lovely. I had forgotten just how much I enjoy this tea & I think I have a greater appreciation for it now because most of my tea drinking (by design) is of flavored teas – that’s one of the things about this job, right? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE this thing about the job – I love drinking teas all day every day. But I have found that most of my tea drinking is of flavored teas & before I started doing the 52Teas thing, I think my tea drinking was a bit more of a balance between both flavored & unflavored teas. (I’ve always thought the term “unflavored tea” to be a bit misleading because even in an “unflavored” state, the tea is incredibly flavorful.) I quite love the ‘unflavored’ teas, actually – but I do love flavored teas as well & I love creating them.
But I digress. It’s been quite a while since I’ve had this particular blend – I ordered it a few times from Frank when he did this thing but I haven’t had it since. It’s really smooth, not overly astringent & not bitter. There is energy to spare with this cuppa!

The wet leaf has notes that remind me of Yunnan leaf. Slight fruit, but mainly malt and milk. The liquor is a very nice rose gold color. Malty flavor but also cream of wheat and mixtures of different wood types. No astringency. Soft mouthfeel. I need to clean up my tea area…. I don’t want to…

Put off drinking this one for a whole year, mostly because once I received it, I wasn’t really wanting to have high-caffeine teas (not like this is any higher than other straight blacks likely, but still.) Anyhow, I think I oversteeped or perhaps just overleafed – there was an astringency to it that made me think that it was too strong as opposed to naturally-astringent/tannic teas. It wasn’t bad, but I’ll have to try it again paying more attention to the parameters.

It is a blend of Assam teas – it’s one that was part of Frank’s permanent collection while he had one – and I got a couple of requests to bring it back – one of those requests was from Frank! I don’t know if I’ll keep it around for an extended period of time (ie: permanent) – I think it works really well with a drizzle of honey & a splash of milk – a nice breakfast tea.

I had two pots of this today to finish off the little packet. The first, I drank straight. For the second one I broke out my little creamer pitcher and am having it with oat milk. I almost never add anything to tea, so it’s always a fun little treat when I do.
This is a perfectly pleasant black tea blend. A bit brisk, malty, and raisiny as I would expect an Assam blend to be. There’s a nice deep dark caramelized sugar note as well. It’s slightly tannic but not bitter, and takes milk well.
Really enjoying this last pot with the oat milk – I’m trying the Oatly barista blend and it’s quite good. Hooray for simple pleasures on a Monday!
