New tea!!

This is one of two new teas from what is essentially this year’s Feel Good collection. There are also a handful of returning teas as well including a renamed Reishi Recharge (now Reishi Relax) as well as an update to Happy Kombucha so that the tea is now naturally instead of artificially flavoured.

This, however, is my favourite of the collection. I feel like at this point it’s safe to say that in general I tend to really love DT’s cherry flavoured teas – Cherry Lucuma is one of my all time favourite DT blends and I also enjoy both Hibiscus Splash and Cherry Berry Punch quite a lot too. However, as the name kind of implies, I find this to be the cherriest of the cherry teas! It’s intense, y’all!

I find the flavour quite punchy and vibrant but also sort of sour! During the summers spent at my grandmother’s house as a child, we used to love getting cherry slushies from the local icecream shop. We would always add a pump or two of the ‘shocker’ – which was essentially a malic acid syrup that made your slushy more sour. That’s what the taste of this tea kind of reminds me of – especially when I drink it iced or cold brewed. About a half year ago I took home a little over 50g of this to drink while I waited for it to launch and I’m down to about a cup or two left (I’ll be restocking though) now. I went through a ton of it in the summer months, in particular. Probably for the aforementioned association.

But taste aside I also find the ingredient list is kind of interesting. It’s on a green tea base (though you don’t taste the base at all) which means you get the benefit of it having some caffeine – which I appreciate since currently the only ‘core’ cherry tea is the caffeine free Hibiscus Punch. It’s also the first time DT has released a caffeinated blend that has moringa in it. I don’t really talk about wellness benefits because it’s not my primary reason for drinking tea, but people who do drink moringa tea for it’s purported health benefits will know that it does not taste pleasant. So what I love about this tea is that the really saturated and punchy cherry flavour completely covers up and off taste from the moringa itself. The other weird and interesting ingredient… tomato!?

Look, I know some people find tomato in tea kind of strange. However, I actually own several teas with tomato in them – it’s a cool ingredient because tomato actually has more of a tangy sweetness than I think a lot of people like to acknowledge them for. I mean, there are technically a berry after all! So, the tomato is mostly adding a nice natural supporting fruity sweetness that helps build up and layer that rich cherry flavour.

I’m really excited to see what people think of this blend – it’s such a vibrant and intense cherry tea that I think is really deserving of the name Very Cherry. One for the cherry lovers, for sure!

I don’t think I’ve ever had tomato in a tea that wasn’t one of those soupy/brothy savory teas but I can kind of see it working. I’ve had some dried tomatoes and tomato sauces that were pretty sweet.

One of my favourite blends with tomato is actually a tisane that also has cucumber and orange in it. It’s quite naturally sweet and juicy with a refreshing vegetal note from the cucumber.

I don’t think I’ve ever had tomato in a tea that wasn’t one of those soupy/brothy savory teas but I can kind of see it working. I’ve had some dried tomatoes and tomato sauces that were pretty sweet.

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.
