Tea Buying Hiatus Support Group
I’m going on 7 hours! David (from Verdant) just HAD to go to China! I couldn’t resist picking up some teaware (more than I should have). Don’t worry, I left some for the rest of you!
I’m just so excited when he goes there as I know the wares are authentic. Now I will just need to go and work 24/7 to pay for it! LOL
uuughghghg….I’ve been really struggling to NOT buy one of those amazing teasets…the one way I’ve rationalized myself out of it is realizing how small they are. The teapots are the same size as a 4oz gaiwan, so the cups are teeny tiny…2 oz at best…but they are so beautiful!
I was waiting to pounce as soon as I saw their preview pictures. Well, it’s happy-birthday-to-me sort of present.
Confession: I also bought a couple samples of tea ._.
I’m so jealous of everyone buying teaware… I really want a gaiwan but I am holding out to find a bird one. Fish are so tempting though!
@Dustin – REALLY? Teaware doesn’t count? I’m off the hook for all my guilt then! I did have to order 2oz of the chocolate Laoshan but hey – only 2oz!
The teaware is just so beautiful – more like art to me. I got a gaiwan for everyday use. I know I’ll never be able to find a partial glaze set again on my own. Will just tell hubby I don’t need a mothers day gift.
@darby – teaware doesn’t count but any of that black stuff you added to your cart does grin :)
Urgh, I’m really struggling you guys. I already reached my allotted ordering for the month of May, but I loaded up a cart on Verdant, and I’m so tempted to click ‘check-out’… I keep telling myself ‘not until June’ but I wants them NAO. D:
The worst part? We’re only in the first week of May! I don’t think I’ll be able to hold back that long! :(
You can do it. Hang in there. You will feel good when you get to the end of May and you haven’t gone overbudget.
You’re right. Yes, it’ll be a nice reward in June instead of hanging my head in shame when the Visa bill comes in.
I think I better take a step back from the laptop for a few minutes until the initial buying urge is gone.
you can do it chizakura! If you’re worried about teas selling out, just keep an eye out on the low stock. Give yourself until June to earn enough points at verdant to get 10$ off your next order!
If you’re going to do it, do it right and order teaware! I can’t wait to get my new wares from David’s recent trip.
Think of a great tea you already own and drink that for a treat. Who needs new tea when you already have so many good ones?
I HAVE to stop. Right out of control. I have FOUR orders in the mail (Red Leaf, Verdant, Mandala, and Fusion Teas). I’m moving this weekend and I don’t have time to be shopping for more teas. Yet Bluebird is calling my name. I would really like to support a new company that seems to be really listening to what it’s customers have to say. Someone please remind me that I can still buy tea next month…….
Don’t worry. Its happened to all of us. You can always buy tea next month, and the month after, and the month after that. But within reason though, right?!?
the nice thing about bluebird? they will still be here next month. And that will give you lots of time to read the reviews and plan out what you want to purchase you can do it!
Right!!! Reason, right!!! How much is too much?!? I’ve packed all my unopened packages, making myself only drink what’s opened. I’ve done good, my cupboard number is coming down. I’ll make lots of iced tea with fruit tisanes once I get moved in. I will drink the tea. Need to limit the buying splurges.
You’re right, you’re right, I know you are right!!! Sorry Bluebird, you will be my first order once the beast is under control!!!!
My problem is I want to try everything, and the more I try, the more options there seems to be, and it’s just a vicious cycle. Maybe someday I will find my 50 (?) fav teas and then try a few new ones here or there. That is the goal. Yeah right :))
Hang in there Dexter! We’ve all been there!
I think starting in June I’m gonna order from 1 company per month. It will be hard, because I’m a binge orderer. If I place 1 order, I’ll place 2 or 3 or more, usually within hours of each other. It’s like I go temporarily insane & have to have ALL the TEAS!
So if I allow myself to pick one company to go nuts over each month…
@Terri, that is SO exactly what I do. And your new rule is pretty much the same rule as mine. I’ve told myself I’m allowed one big Butiki order per month, and one small order from a second company. Having a routine will help keep it in check I think. This is the first month of my new rule though, so I’m warring with myself a little to uphold it.
Dexter, would it help ease the pangs at all to have a taste or two of some Bluebird teas to tide you over? I have the Rhubarb & Custard rooibos (very nice), Nearly Nirvana (ditto), Honey Bee Beautiful (confusing! Overwhelming taste is of licorice w honey notes, but I still kind of like it), and would be happy to send you some of any of those to try. Also have the Great British Cuppa (not strong enough for my taste) and a sample they sent of Cocoabana Coola which I haven’t tried because of the hibiscus.
Chiza – That was sort of why I joined Verdant’s TOMC initially, to give myself a package to look forward to each month, in hopes that I would be less inclined to go off the deep end. It worked for awhile, but like all the brilliant ideas that Ms Theresa comes up with, (usually in the forms of bribes like, “if you & little terri help clean the office, I’ll let you set up a special tea making area, just like ‘real’ offices have”), it was doomed to failure. We were all good until the end of march, when I placed an additional order from Verdant, 3 orders in 2 weeks from Butiki, an order from the Tea Spot, picked up a bunch of tea from the frontier bulk bins at the store, bought 3 rooibos blends from the Farmer’s Market…I think that’s everything, LOL. Oh, & I bought a tea canister from Verdant. Luckily Ms Theresa woke up in time to keep me from buying the awesome porcelain & clay tea set! Whew! She pointed out that it’s only 4oz, & the cups are probably only 2 oz. “But it’s SO beautiful,” we whined.
“Go clean the office” She commanded.
So now we’re not allowed to buy tea until:
We FINALLY clean & organize the office (please don’t ask how long we’ve been working on this project, because it’s been years. We get sidetracked, things get piled up in there, tax season comes…the only really organized part is my calendar & the file drawer where I keep track of my gigs).
We sipdown to 200 or less
June or later…now you know why nobody likes Ms Theresa…
Thanks all. Helps to know that this “I have to try everything” part of the journey is just part of the cycle. I also try to negotiate with myself. LOL the part that wants the tea usually wins.
Hallieod: That is very generous of you, thank you. I have started following you. I am in the process of moving, I’m not sure where certain teas are at the moment. I also have 2 of the Verdant teas on your shopping list “in the mail” to me. I would love to work out a swap with you if you will give me about a week to get moved to my new place and to let my orders come in. Once my cupboard is updated, maybe you can find something you would like.
Swaps are so awesome! I’ve gotten to try so many teas I would have never tasted thanks to awesome friends like Bonnie, Azzrian, Ysaurella, Sil, & others. Thanks!
Dexter, you have all my sympathies with a move coming up! I’ll PM you, but no worries about sending anything in return at the moment. I can pass on *Sil*’s generosity in offering to send me tea while I had little in my cupboard of interest. :)
Everyone’s doing pretty good! Minus a few slips :)
I don’t post often but I read everyone’s updates! I can proudly say I haven’t ordered anything yet so far this month, as I solemnly vowed. 8 days FTW!! Haha.
It helps that I’m still getting tea I ordered last month and some swaps as well. Nice to have something to look forward to!! The problem with swaps is that I list stuff to get rid of it and then I end up with more tea to replace it. I just need to start randomly mailing samples to people on the cheap. Is that acceptable??? Haha. Tea newbs, come to me!!
I can’t drink as much tea per day anymore so it’s hard to get through all these samples.
And there are teas I definitely don’t need as much of these days, changing tastes and all. Hoarding tea isn’t super successful in the long run because it’s only fresh for so long. I have definite hoarding tendencies. And the door to my tea cupboard is not quite shutting tightly these days.
My husband opened it the other day and said “I think this is getting a little out of hand now, don’t you??”
He’s the responsible one and I’m the fun one. ;)
Has it already been 8 days! Lol I kid of course because its hard. There are already teas I’m desperate to try and pick up ASAP. Still though it helps that I’ve got incoming swaps as well as a couple orders that I just received. Lol
I know what you guys mean. I still want to do that Verdant order I mentioned a couple posts ago, but I’m staying strong. xD Haha. It helps that I have a Butiki and a Teavivre order to look forward to. The Butiki has some of my favorites as well as several new things to try, and everything from Teavivre is new to me, so having those to look forward to and the excitement of trying each one should help tide me over until June before more ordering.
(but now I’m hovering over an order on Chapters … Dangit. If it’s not tea, then it’s books!)
chiz…sooo bad time to mention chapters has a lovely white tea exclusive for mothers day from sloane? lol
April 30th was my last purchase date. I’m wondering how long I can go without ordering. Like how strong is my will power? I know I have enough tea to last me a couple years at this point. Stupid amount of tea to own! Should we have a contest to see how long we can each go? Would that help with the hiatus motivation?
Right now I’m finding having tea in the house frustrating, so that helps me not order more. I had sinus surgery and can’t smell or taste anything which is super torture at the moment, especially with new stuff I’m dying to try. The upside is I can eat normally lethal amounts of wasabi. I’m living through my husband’s tea drinking, asking him what he brewed, how it tastes and all. It must be annoying, but not as annoying as not being able to taste it myself so I’ll keep bugging him. >:)
I think we should all relapse the first week of June, order a bunch of teas, then have a contest to see who can go the longest ;)
Wait, what happens the first week of June?! Is there new tea coming out in June?
Totally in rehab. :)
Dustin – June is the arbitrary end of the month we’re trying to go without buying teas….well June and at least for Terri and I, gt down to 200!
I see. I fear that if I let myself relapse in June, I won’t be able to get back on the wagon! Now I’m trying to brainstorm what I’d let myself buy… this already isn’t good!
Sil: Ms Theresa added one more criterion to my own personal requirements – I have to finish cleaning my office. I’m at that place where the end of the job is starting to approach, & I can already feel little terri losing interest & trying to sabotage completion, mainly for fear of not knowing what to do with the remaining crap. Also, this is the point in which I usually get sidetracked & then I throw a teaparty, piling all the piles of junk from the downstairs rooms in my office, closing the door so nobody will see the mess. That’s how my office got trashed to begin with.
terri…soooo i’m over 300 teas again with 3 swaps still incoming. lol and i get to place my order from the steap shoppe since that was excluded from my june order thing because they were fixing an issue i had in may when i went to order.. heh
I almost bought tea today. I really want peaches and cream from sloane but the Individual tin is 15 sachets. And for double the price, I could get 4 times as much tea (and in loose form)..but I hate the other 3 tins of tea. So I didn’t….but it’s haaaaarrrrd….
When I was checking out the Sloan page, I swear I had drool dripping off my chin…ok, not really, but at least in my imagination. Some of those teas (including the peach & cream) sound so tasty. Hang in there Sil, there will be another day.
I really want to place a Butiki order, but I’m going to make myself wait until June. pout
I have to constantly remind myself that many of the teas I’d want to buy will still be in stock even after I finish my hiatus. Constantly. 52teas’ blends makes this a little hard.
It does, but there are usually a few people who don’t like each blend and are willing to trade what they bought. I just need to stop looking at the 52updates and stop the temptation from the get go!
Some blends just sound so good xP It’s hard to not peak at the updates – for any company. But there’s no way I’m embarking on a hiatus from visiting this site.
I broke my hiatus…. but it wasn’t my fault, someone here made me do it. I won’t name names whistles
We split on the VIT’s & I order 5 other 52teas blends.
No guilt though! or shame haha
