2019 Year of the Sipdown Challenge
I think my first sipdown goals will be to drink all of the Oolong group buy teas from 2016!
1. Koubi Shiage Miyazaki – Yuuki-Cha
2. Kagoshima – Yuuki-Cha
3. balled oolong – unknown
Ooh, I should participate here for accountability. I have a goal of 365 sipdowns minimum this year. Everything counts, including separate packages of the same tea acquired at different times (individual tea packets acquired simultaneously don’t count, e.g. oolongs). I’m currently averaging closer to 2/day, but I’m trying to make sure at least one of those is something fairly old/badly packaged, because those teas really need to go. My tea stash is quite out of control.
I will note that I have a LOT of small samples, so would likely be able to handily hit this number with only drinking one cup of tea a day. However, I’m planning on drinking multiple cups per day so I make progress on other things, too!
23 teas sipped down already! But as I said, I more or less just have to drink 365 cups of tea in order to reach my goal, so it’s not as insane as it sounds :D And being at home on mat leave, drinking that many teas is not proving to be terribly difficult.
I have finished off two more, one from Sampler Sunday, but the bigger accomplishment (glad to have this one out of my house!), a much larger sized and not great very artificial flavored chocomint rooibos (that flavor stained my infuser so I had to give it a bath yesterday, grr!)

Working on another box of bagged tea in my work thermos now… those boxes take up too much space and I’m not that big of a fan of them anyway. I may make some big strides in that particular cupboard.
I had to stop keeping a kettle at work because for some reason I simply couldn’t figure out, it always made the water taste “metallic” or “rubbery”. I brought water from home, so it wasn’t even the water source. I took the kettle home and used it at home, and it made tea fine at home. Something about using the kettle AT work makes gross water. So I can’t make tea at work. I have to make my tea at home and take it to work.
Hello all! I should be doing this, too. Since I’m subscribed to Sips by, my Cupboard needs to be thinned down regularly. And samples totally do count, Morgana, haha!
So, since New Year’s Day, I am up to 4 sipdowns. I’m trying to do at least one a week, but I also don’t like to drink the same tea two days in a row, so this might be good challenge. But, I go through at least a gallon of tea during the work week, so… we’ll see how that adds up.
Nice job, Tabby! I could never do a subscription service at this point in time, my cupboard is already too out of hand!
I’ve added three more to my sipdown count, so my January total is now at 7. I actually managed to rearrange my herbals cupboard and it isn’t so messy/awful up in there. Am still working on trying to make some space in the “teaware” cupboard which got overrun by tea instead some time ago, which is where most of the bagged/boxed teas are.
Congrats to everyone on their progress so far! I am up to 7 sipdowns for the year and I just combined three different teas into a cold brew, so once that is done I’ll be able to count 3 more. That will get my to my goal for January and then it will all be stretch and gravy from there!
Huzzah!
I’m at 11 so far for the year, but 10 of them were small swap samples. ;)
I’m focusing on clearing out my swap samples first, then I’ll probably move on to my purchased samples, and then to older teas.
Although I have so many purchased samples, I likely won’t get through them all…
Nice job everyone! So much progress just a few weeks into 2019!
I’m currently at 8, and very happy with my progress! My goals are targetted toward freeing up space, and this last week I went through the herbal cupboard in my kitchen and also the shelving in my living room and reorganized and am feeling a little better. Definitely no space for expansion (order hiatus is most definitely staying on for the time being) but I had cleared enough room out of the sampler drawers in the kitchen that the smallest packages were able to be shifted to those drawers, and now things aren’t crammed into a craziness that hurts my librarian head; all my packages are in nice, neat, alphabetical rows. So babysteps are being made toward the space problem. Have yoinked the next set of things that I’ll be working towards for sipdown since I have a little dedicated spot I set those things so when I go into the kitchen for a cuppa they grab my attention.
@Mastress Alita – good job! It’s such a feeling of relief even to free up a bit of previously occupied space! I recently put the vast majority of my teas into a large cube shelving unit, and although I didn’t actually reduce the size of my stash, it felt better to have everything neatly in one place. (There is one bin of tea yet to fit in there, and as my sipdowns accumulate, I’m hoping it will make it in!)
I just joined you all and am glad I got in at the beginning of 2019, 3 sipdowns and counting. Dragon Well, Lapsang Souchong and Sinharaja, all from Golden Moon tea.
Thanks Morgana,
My Best, Mark
I started counting sipdowns, but I stopped since it’s kind of pointless in my case. I share so much tea with family, I send it away in swaps, or I sell it, so sipdowns just aren’t a very meaningful count. Instead, I’ll challenge myself to finish all the tea that I started the year with. Anything in my stash on January 1st needs to be gone by December 31st. That’s a few pounds of tea, so I may fail, but it’ll be useful for cycling through older teas regardless. Anyway, I’ll update at the end of the year. We’ll see!
Congrats on doing so well, everyone! I’m on 9 sipdowns this year so far, should be getting my 10th in today!
