How many teapots do you own?
I have this habit of going to thrift stores/garage sales to buy good quality teapots for very good prices. I not have 5 pots and 8 different tea cups and I am in love with all of them.
I just bought a beautiful black and white Japanese clay teapot with a little brush stroke bamboo on the front ($5.00) as well as a little tea cup for $1.00. I also just bought a Yixing pot (clay) online coming in a few weeks.
Am I being weird or do others have many teapots as well?
Not weird. Not in the tea community anyway. I have 5 or 6 not counting my gaiwan. I’m sure that is on the low range for many on here. I have no idea why I have the addiction I do other than I love tea. But you would think one or two would be fine. But I am always on the lookout at stores and art fairs.
I own around 20 teapots and 35 cups. In my defence they are different sizes and origins, well mostly anyway. Plus variety is the spice of life in the tea world. Some people collect stranger things.
Ps. I bought another 2 cups today and already have others in mind. And I got a new teapot and cup set yesterday.
I am guessing that I have over sixty teapots. Most of which were collected before I started brewing gongfu style and are now too large for my average use. But I like my collection. I have picked up at least thirty five or so Yixing teapots at least. The smallest one is probably 60ml, the largest one is 1.5 liters. The large one hasn’t seen any use since I started brewing my tea gongfu style. It has been suggested that I sell some of them but I really don’t even want to part with the big ones I don’t use.
Did a quick tally (easy to do since nearly all my teaware is in my room)…
Currently I’m sitting at:
Six (6) Gaiwans
Five (5) Yixing Pots
Eighteen (18) Infuser Mugs
Three (3) British Style “Teacups” With the matching saucer…
One (1) Chawan and Two (2) Chasens For matcha
Seven** (7) Teacups For Gong Fu style drinking
One (1) Aroma Cup
Two (2) Chahai/pitchers
One (1) Mate Gourd
Five (5) Western style teapots Three of which come with (4) cups
Two (2) Tea Trays
One (1) Cupping Set
Four (4) Teapets
Two (2) Timolinos/Carry Mugs
Two (2) Cold Brew Pitchers
**Seven for now, but I just ordered two more to add to the collection…
It’s a little scary to see it all listed out, but it’s a fun addiction.
I’ve got 10 teapots. There’s one cast iron, one porcelain, two yixing, two side handled pots (Chinese), two Kyusu (Japanese) and one celadon.
52 Western style pots, including 2 tea for one sets
2 kyusu
7 clay pots (probably not all yixing)
7 gaiwans
5 glass Western style pots
2 travel gaiwan sets
You are in good (or at least understanding) company here when it comes to teaware collecting. :)
23 clay pots (techically 24, but my mom has not mailed it yet)
16 other pots in various sizes and materials
22 gaiwans (and one shiboridashi on the way, so 23)
7 chai hai
countless cups…no really, I am not counting them, I have far too many, they are the thing I hoard the most
a small army of tea pets
My problem is that someone gifts me a teapot every year… Lets see, so far I count 6 tea pots. In order of arrival:
-A tiny flowered teapot from china town (mostly decorative)
-A green metal teapot from Teavana
-A single serving glass teapot (the kind with a nesting cup) – good for blooming & colorful teas
-A large ceramic pot a friend painted for me (good for company)
-A Tardis tea-pot (just what the Doctor ordered)
-A baby french press (does that count?)
As well as a couple of pots I made myself, but they don’t get used much.
5 gaiwans, 4 shibos (three I made myself) and 11 teapots (one I made myself). Didn’t count but dozens of cups.
This is really just a start.
