A review of Awake (Black Tea) by Tazo Tea

Tea Name: Awake
Tea Type/Varietal: Black
Region:
Steeping Vessel/Amt. Leaf: cup/ teabag
Plucking Season:
Liquor Color: bright orange red
Leaf Characteristics:
1st Steeping:
Water temperature: 200 Fahrenheit
Time: 5 minutes
I have been enjoying this one Tazo tea bag for most of the day. I took the tea bag and put it in my cup and pour the boiling water into my cup and left it to steep for a good five minutes. I than took my cup to view the tea’s color which is a lovely reddish orange cup of tea. At first there does not seem to be an aroma; nothing prevalent to permeate the air or my nostrils. Upon sipping the tea, however, I am met with a full bodied cup of tea which is smooth and creamy with a slight malt taste.
Overall, this tea has no after taste and is not bitter at all. It stands on its own with no sugar or cream added and as one drinks the tea it taste as good as first to the last drop. Tea is just as described on package “A lovely tea of boldness, depth and character, invigorating any time of day.
This another one of the tea bags obtained while volunteering at The Massachusetts Conference for Women.

A review of Calm Herbal Infusion by Tazo Tea
Company: Tazo Tea
Tea Name: Calm
Tea Type/Varietal: Herbal
Region:
Steeping Vessel/Amt. Leaf: cup/tea bag
Plucking Season:
Liquor Color: soft amber
Leaf Characteristics:
1st Steeping:
Water temperature: 190 Fahrenheit
Time: 5 minutes
I volunteered for The Massachusetts Women Conference and obtained these tea samples from them. I had a cup of this herbal infusion while waiting in the volunteer room and decided to take some home. I have so many teas to review; there was no need for my taking them. Yet I did. A thief I am. Anyhow, I fixed for myself a lovely cup of this Calm tea this morning and not mid day mind you.
I seem always calm, and yet the world around me is chaotic since it is not my home; my life is not my own it feels like. The other reason for being attracted to this tea is because I had purchased a bottle of Tazo Herbal Infusion but it was infused with spearmint and peppermint. So seeing this herbal infusion strikes a cord of familiarity and the tea is quite nice.
I take one tea bag and put in my cup and pour in the hot water leaving it to steep for a good five minutes and the aroma fills the air immediately with hints of chamomile, hibiscus and rose petals. It is a lovely light amber (yellow base) and when I sip and sip this tea it is the Chamomile that is most prevalent and with more sipping there is the hints for other herbs like lemongrass but not too strong and hints of rose in the fragrant as well.
This is probably the most soothing tea that I have had and I can just keep drinking it all day long; similarly I did while waiting in the volunteer room at the conference after having found this tea. I had been there earlier in the morning and had not notice that there was tea; well I did not think to look for tea. But in the afternoon while in the same room I look closely at the table and saw the tea sampler box and ventured over to finding (Tazo teas, Tetley Teas and Lipton tea bags) I chose this herbal infusion of Calm tea and fixed myself a cup of this tea and taking some of the tea bags with me.
I am happy to say I have had another wonderful cup of tea by Tazo Tea. Thank you to the conference staff for having such good teas available.
Preparation
just made some creamy oatmeal with this! I’d actually never put tea in oatmeal before. Quite yummy. I found an extra box of this hiding in the back of the cupboard so I’m finding ways to use it.
So today I found out I’m actually farther along in my pregnancy than I thought. I had my first ultrasound and found out my due date is probably closer to June 9th then June 23rd. Wow!
And it’s most likely a girl! Which is what me, my husband and mom all had a feeling about. Sounds like little Lily’s gonna be a gemini!
I am so obsessed with making oatmeal with tea. I didn’t have a chance to eat mine this morning :( and also that is super exciting about your baby!
“Natural flavors” does not constitute “pear”. Whatever, I’m picky about what’s on the back of the box. I don’t even taste pear, anyway.
I’ll only drink this one iced. It’s refreshing when its cold and reminds me of a Dark ‘n Stormy (Gosling’s dark rum, Gosling’s or Saranac ginger beer, ginger and lime simple syrup, wedge of lime). If you haven’t tried one, please do. I might just try and make one with this tea.
If you drink this warm, there’s something about it that’s off-putting. The ginger is too faint and there’s too much emphasis lemongrass. Its got a bergamot intensity when it should be crisp and clean. Ginger is light and has a zing to it, its not oily and deep, like this tea makes it. Hence, why I ice it; it calms down and is sweet and clean.
Preparation
Okay, take two before I throw this tea bag out. This time I used “green tea” temperature water and steeped it for about 2 minutes or so. I’m hoping to bring these green tea notes out that I supposedly missed the first time around.
And…. no. It still tastes like black tea to me. And it’s still too astrigent for me to enjoy. Maybe even more so the second time. Not enjoyable at all.
Good try, Starbucks, but this random blend brings me no joy. I gave it a shot.
Is this what happens when Starbucks buys a tea company? And to think…Teavana already couldn’t make a good tea blend!
LOL. Well to be fair, I don’t know how good Tazo was before this.
To Starbucks credit, they did used to use typical tea bags and switched to full-leaf pyramid bags, so.. it’s a start. But they’re still a coffee company first and foremost (and from what I understand from my coffee snob friends, they’re not even a GOOD coffee company).
Yes, their coffee is mediocre from what I’ve heard. I personally used to enjoy tazo teas – but that might have been before I discovered “real” tea. Maybe. :P
Aww, no judgement here. We all have to start somewhere. I started on Tazo too, since they had a bunch of it in the office breakroom.
They’ve had this for a couple years. I can’t remember if I had it last year or two years ago but it was pretty meh.
Steven Smith started Tazo which was acquired by starbucks in 1999, so, I’m going to state emphatically that Tazo WAS a good tea company at one time. But in the 13 years since Steven Smith was at the helm it has managed to lose its way.
Why do large corporations always throw acquired companies to the dumpster? Large corporations seem to have no care in the world for quality :/
Because it’s all about the money, money, money.
One thing I’ve learned as I get older – especially regarding politics – when I ask, “Why does this happen? It makes no sense” it’s usually because of money.
Starbucks was having a BOGO on Tazo teas. I saw they had Joy, the seasonal blend, as part of this sale. $7 for 30 sachets seemed like a good deal, but I wasn’t sure if I would like the tea. So I bought just a cup to see if I’d like it.
The verdict? Bleh. I might have steeped this longer than I needed to, since it’s a little bitter. I’m mostly tasting black tea. There’s supposedly oolong and green in here, too, but I don’t really get it. I’d recommend this to someone who likes Christmad stuff and black tea.
I’d bet this might perk up with a little milk. I’ll give it a second steeping and see what happens.
I’m embarrassed to admit that while in the summer I always get an iced passion tea lemonade from Starbucks, I didn’t realize that they actually sold the tea! Starbucks has BOGO on tazo teas today, so I picked up a box and brewed a cup. And yeah, I think I will stick to drinking it cold in the warmer months! I found it quite bitter and tart, and I added a fair bit of sugar to it. :3
Totally reminded me of Fruit Loops, and apparently I’m not the only one who thought so. As unpleasant as that sounds, I actually quite enjoyed it. It’s a yummy tea to have when I’m craving black tea with a bit of milk and sugar, but not as good as I’d imagine Earl Grey should be. Less of a fake citrus flavour would be nice.

Preparation
This is defiantly a morning tea. I know it gets a bad rep for being harsh and slightly bitter, but this tea is a great alternative for people who don’t want to drink coffee in the morning.
I recommend drinking it with evaporated milk and sugar. It gives it a creamy texture that you don’t get with 2% milk and makes the flavour softer. I really like it when I’m on the go and don’t have time for breakfast.
Preparation
It was kind of bland for me. I had to let it cool before I could really taste the more subtle flavors of the green and oolong teas. It smells fantastic dry, anyway. I think all of the flavors would pop out with a little sugar, but I always say that. :)
Preparation
While at Walmart today, I picked up a bottle of this in the checkout line. Not a good decision. As I see in many of the other posts about it, it does have an off taste. I couldn’t stomach any more than 2 sips. I will not be picking up another one of these and hope this note will help you to not make the same mistake I did.
I was worried about this blend from the start since it is a combination of black, oolong, and green teas. Still I had to try it and so I did. It was very fruity. I have never been a huge fan of teas where the the strongest flavor is fruit. I don’t mind it being a part of a more complicated flavor profile but not so much the primary flavor. With that said it isn’t for me but I can see someone else liking it if they were a fan of fruity flavored teas. Oh and surprisingly this tea doesn’t actually have fruit in it, it’s the tea itself that has that characteristic.
