I’m usually pretty averse to artificial flavors, but somehow i find this Lipton tea totally delightful. It smells absolutely wonderful, and while the flavor is delicate, a little bit of honey seems to really bring everything together for me. It’s my husband’s favorite tea, and i usually wish i’d gone with this rather than whatever i’ve picked for myself when i make it for him. It doesn’t really have a tea flavor at all; it mainly just tastes like caramel. Yum!

I have refrained and resisted from rating this tea because its underwhelming reputation has done enough damage to the name “Lipton.” Or has it? This poor excuse for tea relates to hip/hop in the way that it’s useless and serves no real purpose but also never seems to go away. How can a product be so terrible and have such a poor reputation but continue to pervade store shelves? Anyway, when I’m out to a meal and I order tea I always let them know that if they only provide Lipton to just bring me water or coffee. I would rather drink Tetley filtered through a dirty gym sock. Lipton should be free and never sold. Calling it “tea dust” is a compliment.

drank Vanilla Caramel Truffle by Lipton

Had this ages ago . . . It tasted weird and wrong, on multiple attempts. The tea itself—without adding any sweetener—was cloyingly, overpoweringly sweet. There was also some vanilla flavor, and not much else. I couldn’t taste the tea at all.

The best way I found to drink it was with milk and no added sweetener. Then it was like watery vanilla-flavored milk. . . . Though still not what I wanted, which was a cup of TEA.

Gave the rest to a friend.

drank Darjeeling by Lipton

In some respects, I find it hard to believe that I am actually reviewing a tea that is sold by Lipton. Quite some time ago, when I was first starting to “get into” tea, I discovered quickly that Lipton bagged teas were far from quality, when compared with some other bagged tea offerings, as well as nearly every loose leaf tea. The contents of each tea bag tasted as though they were fannings, which are the leftover dust of broken tea leaves. Yet Lipton’s bagged teas were so inexpensive that they became the go-to bagged tea for hotels, restaurants, convenience stores, etc. looking to offer a tea that was cheap.

In more recent years, with the rise in tea’s popularity among the masses, Lipton has been striving to bolster the quality of their offerings, at least from the visible aspect. Switching to pyramid infusers for some of their “premium” lines, offering flavored black teas, actually delving into the areas of white tea and rooibos (albeit flavored on both counts), and expanding upon their herbal blends are all examples of their attempts. (The current obsession with flavoring teas is another story entirely…) Another try on their part is branching beyond the “black tea” label to special, regionalized offerings. Today’s review will touch on their Darjeeling.

Traditionally, Darjeeling tea is sourced from a specific region in India, but the packaging for this tea bag has no source information. Because it is one of their “premium” teas, the label is at least a bit fancier than their generic black tea or even their Yellow Label tea. As three to five minutes of steep time in just-boiled water are recommended, I choose the low end (having already tried a cup of this, yesterday, that was steeped for four minutes and tasted entirely over-infused).

My thoughts from yesterday’s cup had been along the lines of “I had been struck by a small ray of hope upon seeing that Lipton had been branching into what appeared to be slightly fancier teas. Unfortunately, after a very short steep, the produced cup was both bitter/astringent and not particularly flavorful.” Having reduced the steep time for today’s cup, I hoped that I could at least discern some better flavors with perhaps a touch more complexity.

No. No, no, and some more no. I wonder why this tea tastes like their generic black tea with a touch of darjeeling flavors? On one hand, I can at least tell that it is supposed to be darjeeling, so that very, very slightly satisfies my hope. On the other, massive hand…it tastes terrible. In fact, only the aftertaste is really darjeeling. The smell and initial flavors are rough and more reminiscent of an assam of low quality (sans the typical maltiness of an assam). Thankfully, this was a teabag that I picked up from the office and not something on which I spent money. The one redeeming factor about this tea is that worse teas do exist…but that is not saying much. On my personal enjoyment scale, I would rate this tea an 18/100.

drank Lipton Black Tea by Lipton

Well I’m traveling again and stuck in an airport all night with delays. Last night nothing was open but one small shop and the only thing they had was Lipton! I was so desperate I went for it. I noticed it was the new blend that they’ve been advertising on tv, so I was kind of curious as well.

I steeped the bag for 3 minutes at whatever temp the shop water was. The first thing I was greeted with was quite the aroma! It had a nice malty smell with some honeyed notes and a light roastiness. There was also a brightness that was pretty uplifting.

From the very first sip, I really enjoyed this tea. It must be the fresh-pressed tea leaves that they’re now adding to the bags. It really makes a difference! The tea was full bodied but still light and not astringent. It was smooth with a silky texture, with notes of molasses, fresh bread and a hint of chocolate. I really felt great drinking this tea.

I feel like I have to spread the news! This amazing tea can be had at your grocery store! I even found a special coupon code for ordering online today for 50% off, what a steal! The code is: APRILFOOLS

Good one!

Ze_Teamaker

ehehehe I was like, “Wait, Lipton tea rated at 97? INCONCEIVABLE!”

Dinosara

Yeah, I will take the rating off tomorrow. I don’t want anyone to see that in my highest rated teas. :D

Chiyo

Haha man you got me good. Happy April.

Ysaurella

With Easter I almost forgot it was the first of April…until I saw this rating ! well done ;)

Starfevre

wow, I was totally believing you until I hit the coupon code. Nice one.

Indigobloom

DOh! ya got me :P

KiwiDelight

Best tea prank. I’ve been chuckling all day!

LaFleurBleue

You had me there too, especially as the 2nd of April arrived earlier here and the outrageous rating was still there;) Very good one!

JacquelineM

I BELIEVED YOU!!!!!!!!

Dinosara

:D I actually used some of their promo material copy almost verbatim. The stuff about enjoying it “from the very first sip”, and that I “felt great drinking this tea”

LaFleurBleue

Don’t tell me the fresh-pressed tea leaves, the honeyed maltiness or the uplifting effect were also in the promo material…
The most likely uplifting effect it might have is on my stomache, especially if steeped too long.

Dinosara

LOL! Actually they fresh-pressed tea leaves is something they have started advertising in tv commercials. No clue what it means! And “uplifting” was also a word I lifted from the promo material!

Bonnie

Very good!

ohfancythat

hahahah!!

Angrboda

LOL! At first I thought ‘Gosh, Dinosara must be in sore need of a cup of tea…’

GiggleGoddess

which online website uses that code?

It hurts, kill it before it reproduces and hurts your friends and family. Only good for those emergencies where you can’t find anything else, but even then it’s better not drink it.
Steaming pile of tea-like pee.

You appear to be new to steepster so welcome. There’s a newbie thread in the discussion tab. Also, following people who follow you or selecting people to follow allows you to see each others tea reviews (kind of the point of this whole process). The people here are very nice! I’m the oldest probably…the grandma of the place. Moved from Silicon Valley to Colorado a few years ago. Love tea!

Chiyo

Thanks for the welcome~ I will check out the newbie thread. Hope to get to know you and everyone else. :)

For me, this had a very strong taste of (slightly bitter) oranges. It’s good for casual sipping, but I wouldn’t recommend keeping the tea bag in. The brew gets quite bitter after awhile. Decent tea; go for iced with a bit of honey on a hot summer’s’ day.

This is a good light tea for casual sipping; you first get notes of green tea, followed by a gentle wave of hibiscus/rose with hints of passions fruit. I could only taste the raspberry afterwards. It was decent tea and tastes quite good iced with just a smidge of honey.

Honestly, I don’t know how to rate this tea – I don’t know even when I started drinking tea. My first memory is drinking hot lipton tea out of plastic pink cups with milk and sugar. I drank it when I was little on sunday mornings, in middle school before I had to go to the bus stop, every night coming home from rehearsals. I drank it when I visited my grandparents at the hospital, at family function after family function, and when they died. Lipton Tea to me is just a fact of life. The taste of it is familiar and warm. It’s home really.

Bought this kind to keep at work. No matter how quickly I steeped it, it tasted bitter and a little lemony as well. Good to have around the office for a hot drink, but there are many more tasteful green teas out there.
