From Yunomi

A saemidori single cultivar sencha from Kurihara Tea Farm’s new tea field in Yame, Fukuoka prefecture.

The saemidori cultivar has gained respect in the industry for it’s bright color, sweet and umami rich flavor. As sencha, it produces a delicious balance of grassiness with strong savoriness from the umami.

Thank you for the trade, Marshall!!! I’m currently looking at this one and the Gyokuro side by side and being absolutely mind-blown. I mean, it’s not like this is the first gyokuro or sencha I’ve seen but knowing the work they go through to make the minor differences… Just wow.
Dry appearance is amazing. I would not have guessed this to be a sencha because that is stellar coloring. Guess I need to study up more. Needless thin and tight. Dark green with a few light greens.
Dry aroma: nice. Fresh. Bits of umami.
Flavor: Umami. Fresh cut grass.
Mouth feel: smooth.

My shincha order from Yunomi is finally here! I pre-ordered it back in April and it took quite some time for all the teas in the order to become available before they could ship it. I am blown away by this first tea, truly! There is almost nothing wrong with it honestly. I liked Kurihara’s gyokuro in the past, so I wanted to start with their sencha this time. Supposedly this family has about 3 hectares of tea plantations.

This tea is a chumushi (40-50 seconds), but they say the flavor leans more towards a fukamushi as the leaves are so young, and I agree. Very deep umami with phenomenal strength and some nice sweetness. Longevity is 5 infusions; quite solid for a sencha. No bitterness or astringency. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth and rich.

At $0.30/g, this value is INSANE. Super excited for the rest of the samples!
