Mao Xie aka “Hairy Crab” is a type of Anxi oolong tea that grows in many places in Anxi county of Fujian. Mao Xie means literally “Hair of the Crab” and refers to the hairs on the tea leaves that break off when brewed and float on the top of your cup. Mao Xie has got a thicker and sweeter taste than its more floral counterpart Tie Guan Yin.

Our Mao Xie Oolong is the highest grade normally available.

It looks like I’m having an oolong day.

The looseleaf is made up a really pretty rolled balls of emerald green and a few little bits of orange.

Steeped a long time, but in cool water (650 mL 70 *C water). It doesn’t smells like like a flower, but on first taste it is fairly vegetal and extremely floral. It is quite light, not very oxidised. The liquid is not thick at all, but it is certainly a pleasant drink.

The oolong has unfurled its leaves, and it is even more pretty now. This would be an excellent candidate for gong fu (which I will be trying soon) because I suspect the floral flavour will change and new notes will come out.

Overall, a beautiful tea with a light, floral, and slightly vegetable flavour.

A nice happy medium of an oolong. It’s a little toasty and a little floral and a little sweet.
