From white2tea

Our 2022 Blood Moon is a bit of an odd hybrid Yunnan tea. Picked and processed most similarly to yueguangbaior moonlight white tea that has been shade dried, this tea was also intentionally partially oxidized, about half way to being a black tea*. It’s a unique tea that feels closer to an aged shade dried white, despite being freshly picked and processed in 2022.

The bright and clear soup is sweet and enduring, with a velvety softness and aromas that flit between vegetal and fruity. Soft strawberry flavors and grassy honey are at the forefront of its youth, though we suspect it will deepen and thicken up in the coming years. It’s a beautiful experiment to experience.

Each purchase is for one ~ 7 gram ball.

*FOR CATEGORICAL BOXES, BLOOD MOON DOESN’T QUITE FIT INTO EITHER THE WHITE OR BLACK TEA BOX, AND TECHNICALLY IS PROBABLY AN OOLONG, DUE TO IT’S PARTIAL OXIDATION DURING PROCESSING. HOWEVER, FOR EASE OF UNDERSTANDING OF THIS TEA, SINCE IT DRINKS MORE LIKE A BLACK TEA/WHITE TEA HYBRID, WE HAVE LISTED IT ACROSS THOSE TWO CATEGORIES RATHER THAN AS AN OOLONG TEA, WHICH IN PRACTICE, IT DOES NOT REALLY RESEMBLE AT ALL.

Gongfu!

This unique tea that is somewhere between a white tea and a black tea started off softer with warm, buttery and slightly savory notes that intensified over the course of the session into a well juxtaposed mix of brothy miso, green beans, and artichoke and rich butterscotch and English toffee. I love that sweet but salty and umami rich blend. It’s hard to say I’ve tasted another tea quite like it! It’s a good thing I’m working at sipping down some of these minis because I just placed quite a large Shulloween order!

Sipdown! (25 | 61)

Sipping on this one grandpa-style this morning. I used to use double-walled glass tumblers for this because they have convenient little strainers in the top, but I found they kept the tea too hot and it was difficult for me to drink it within any reasonable time frame, leading to oversteeped tea. So I’ve switched to large mugs for the time being, and just trying to avoid the leaves ha ha. Simple is best I guess!

This is a beautiful tea ball, with very large, fuzzy golden buds predominating. Steeped up, it tastes so much like black olives to me! Which is bizarre, but I love black olives so I’m not mad about it ha ha. I could see also calling it a very overcooked green bean-y vegetal note (my grandma always simmered green beans to death with bacon on the stove, and it reminds me of that). Maybe a hint of smoked meat? It’s also malty and thick on the tongue, with a bit of fuzzy apricot and a drizzle of honey. Still, overall it leans quite savory to me. Their description mentions strawberry and I guess I could see that if I really look for it.

I really like this tea. I only ordered one ball next time I will definitely order more. I steeped it gung fu style for 30 seconds. Multiple steeps. I like your description of the taste. Definitely do not overstep.
