Chocolate Chai

Drama, drama, drama. School hasn’t even started yet (we have one more week), and already there’s been tears from my daughter who’s entering eighth grade. She and her friends are working it out, but I have to say this is the part of school I enjoy the least. Junior high girls trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in is the stuff of nightmares. I remember being there myself, but it’s just as tough to watch your kid navigate the junior high years! All of that to say I’m drinking this tea to give myself a little break before going to see how my daughter and her friends are fairing. As much as possible I’d like them to work it out on their own.

I’m liking this chai more and more. It’s wonderfully sweet and spicy, and while there is chocolate it blends with the tea very well. This works for me since I’m not a big chocolate tea fan. I hope Wegman’s keeps this version of this tea for awhile. I like it much more than their previous version. The spice is much more noticeable now, and there seems to be more of the base tea. That, along with the chunks of chocolate, makes this one a keeper.

Maybe I’ll resteep the leaves before wading back into the fray… :)

I couldn’t help myself from diving into this tea today. It was cold and it has been drizzling off and on all day today. Thankfully the wind has died down. Only a couple of tree limbs have fallen to the ground with no damage.

I brewed this for four minutes and poured it into my Tardis mug with no additions to try out. It smells good. I don’t remember it smelling overwhelmingly like chocolate but it made me smile. I tried the tea and with no additions, it doesn’t really taste like much. I mostly could taste the tea and it was a middle of the road tea.

Unsatisfied, I decided that since traditional chai is made with milk then I needed to try this with milk before deciding if I liked it or not. I am so glad I did! When the milk was added both the chocolate and a pepper note jumped out at me. The chocolate was bordering a darker chocolate and the pepper note was closer to a red chili pepper than anything else. It was good and satisfying. I think this would make a very good early morning tea.

Got this yesterday on a wegmans run, and I was craving a chai so it worked out well.

I didn’t feel like the chai or the chocolate were quite strong enough for me, but especially not the chai. I like my chai to have a bit more of a kick. However, this would probably be good for chai lattes- particularly iced come summertime. I’ll have to try it.

The chocolate and coconut combo are what makes it…nice touches! Sweet!

This isn’t a very strong or sharp chai. I’m not really getting any chocolate out of it either, but it is pleasant. Not something I would go out of my way to get, but definitely drinkable. I’m a bit picky about the chai I will drink because a lot of it is too strong or too ginger-y for me. But this one is nice.

LOVE! I’m almost out of this, and last time I made it up to Wegman’s in MD, they didn’t have it..:-( It makes an incredibly good iced latte.. There’s just something about the coconut that makes it better than any other chai.. :-)

As the other reviewers have noted, the flavor is much milder than the fragrance. This might be a good thing, though, if, like me, you’re a little wary of the sharpness encountered with some types of chai. Coming from this viewpoint, the first sips of this were a welcome relief: good complement of flavors without any bite. It’s smooth and it has some depth. Good both with and without almond milk. Cinnamony and just barely chocolatey enough to be satisfying, unlike with other chocolate teas where I’m left thinking ‘yeah, right, where’s the chocolate?’ It’s a good low-calorie treat for a winter day!

Subtle chocolate taste even though there are thick chunks of chocolate in this. It’s a wonderful breakfast drink on a cold drizzly morning — chocolate makes everything feel better :)

This tea isn’t nearly as flavorful as you would expect. It’s without a doubt the best smelling tea in the universe, however. It smells exactly like warm cinnamon buns. Unfortunately, the tea itself tastes a little boring and bland. I’ve found that if you make sure to use hot water and let it steep for almost 6 minutes, and then sweeten it with honey, it really enhances the tea and brings it above and beyond what it would be normally.

In short: Use 205F water, steep for almost 6 minutes, and sweeten with honey. Otherwise, a little bland, but smells fantastic.
