Quangzhou Milk Oolong

I first tried this tea in store with my Afternoon Tea meal. I enjoyed it so bought a bit to take home.
The tea itself smells buttery, mixed with the earthy oolong scent.
Once brewed, there is a subtle, yet present milky/buttery taste. It’s a smooth cup, and I found it quite satisfying. I like to keep a bit around all year long.
Beware, though, as if the temp is too high/low or you steep too long, you can lose the nice light milky taste and get an overpowering astringent tea leaf taste (I suppose just as with most teas, though I find this tea a bit more tempermental when it comes to this). I fiddled with the temp and time quite a bit, but can’t remember the perfect temp and time I stumbled on. I do tend to use water at a lower temp than recommended on their label, though. I’ll try to update the next time I brew it with what I’ve found most pleasant.

I drank this all day today! I filled my 20 oz travel mug with 2 tsp of leaves this morning and added hot (not boiling) water. I sipped on it all morning, refilled at lunch, then refilled mid-afternoon. Yummy, sweet, and a teeny bit creamy all day long. No sugar needed to bring out the sweetness or the light floral nature to this tea. I love it and hope to always have it in the house. My sample is running dangerously low, and I’ll have to make the trek up to The Whistling Kettle soon.

As with most oolong, this tea is good for several steeps, and the flavour changes subtly with each one. It has a pleasant, creamy odour with earthy undertones, and the initial flavour is much the same. This tea tastes almost like it has already had a small amount of milk added to it (hence the name), with hints of the round, almost nutty flavour I’ve come to associate with oolongs. As you steep it more, the milk flavour becomes less prevalent, with the “oolong” flavour becoming more dominant, though it maintains a creamy smoothness throughout the steeps. This tea is delicious, I could happily drunk it all day!

Milk Oolong is one of my favorites so I have been trying to sip as many as I can. This one was interesting. It was a bit less creamy than I am use to, it also had a hint of mint at the end of each sip. The tea was a little less green and a bit more roasted than my favorite oolong. All in all it was a good cup but not my top pick for oolongs.
