Originating in Africa, Rooibos (Afrikaans for “Red Bush”) has been gaining popularity across the world. Rooibos shares the health benefits of the Camellia sinensis plant, with high levels of anti-oxidants, but unlike tea, it is naturally decaffeinated, a fact that is making it more and more sought after for a healthy lifestyle. The tea brews to a darker red color, and has a naturally sweet flavor. Because the Rooibos plant is a member of the Legume family of plants, you will also detect a slightly nutty flavor in the rooibos brew. You can consume Rooibos tea plain, or in the traditional manner, with milk. No matter how you brew it however, you will not get a bitter cup of tea, as the tannin levels are almost non-existent in the Rooibos leaf, despite the fact that it is a highly oxidized tea in it’s processing. A great taste, no caffeine and high levels of anti-oxidants combine to make this tea a sure winner to new tea drinkers and connoisseurs alike!
