Traditional Japanese Genmaicha was invented as a way for poor farmers to stretch their tea supplies. Blending popped rice with green tea reduced the amount of tea in each cup. Soon, this habit caught on across the Japanese society, and Genmaicha became a popular tea throughout Kyoto and Tokyo.
