From SpecialTeas

The earthy character of Pu Erh with its natural smoothness and depth has earned it a devoted following, but even a tea purist will sometimes enjoy a little something extra. We think the addition of orange to this tea is the perfect compliment and may even add to its appeal. The bright, fresh citrus taste of the orange brings the perfect balance to the deep soul of the Pu Erh. With the additional benefit of being organically grown, we think the No.840 Orange Pu Erh is a “must try” for the Pu Erh enthusiast.

Recommendations: Use 1 heaping tsp. per 6 oz. cup. heat fresh water to a roaring boil; let steep 5 min. Try with milk.

Wombatgirl sent this one to me, and it is actually the orange pu-erh that started our swap. Or, well, it was my NBT one, I think, that did. I had a great experience with that one and she told me about how she hadn’t had a very good experience with this one. So she sent me hers and I sent her mine.

The leaves smelled a bit… fishy. I’d like to choose a more poetic word and say ‘ocean-y’ here but I can’t really stretch to that. It’s fishy. The end. Of course it’s also pu-erh-y and orange-y, but compared to the memory of the NBT (I ran out), it smells a little more old. Not as lively. Not as fresh. Which is a weird thing to say about a pu-erh, honestly, but it’s true.

After steeping the orange aroma comes out more, but I’m only picking up some earthy hints of the pu-erh. Mostly it’s dried oranges. It makes it seem a little more lively, but it still strikes me a bit… thin.

No, this does not compare to NBT at all. If I slurp the sips I get pu-erh and oranges and everything, but it just tastes very dusty. Again, it lacks livelyness. It’s just a standard tea. It doesn’t have character.

It’s nice enough, and I certainly like it better than Wombatgirl did, but it’s not even close to being as good as the NBT orange pu-erh.

PHEW!
I’m glad you don’t hate it.

Angrboda

No, I liked it. But I DO like the NBT one better. :)

First time I try a tea, I always go off the instructions on the front of the package. This has gotten me into trouble (I’m looking directly at you Samovar Royal Garland*) a few times, and this was one of them.

I was making 16 oz of tea, so I added slightly over 2.5 heaping teaspoons per directions (1 heaping tsp per 6 oz water) and brewed for the 5 minutes it noted.

It smelled like a fishtank and the hubband poured his cup down the sink after two sips. In protest. I just didn’t finish mine. I have a bunch of this – it was on sale @ specialteas. So I took it to work and tried it again. This time, not quite 2 for 12 oz of water, and about 3 minutes.

Much more palateable. The orange does add a nice note, and it doesn’t smell like a fishtank anymore. However, this is not my favorite pu-erh, by a long shot.

(*My container of Samovar Royal Garland called for 2-3 tbsp to 6 oz of water. It was not pretty. I haven’t reviewed yet because I haven’t gotten over that, even though I know I need to try it with a much more reasonable parameters.)

Wow, that 2-3 tbsp thing sounds like a misprint!
