Genmaicha is an uniquely distinctive and delicious tea, due to the fact that it is made using perfectly roasted grains of brown rice, which often expand and pop during roasting. This surprisingly tasty recipe actually originated with the poor citizens of Japan as a clever way to extend the household tea supply until the following spring. This invention quickly became a smashing success. Roasting the rice transforms the grains into tiny, crunchy parcels of sweetness, that then infuse harmonically with the sylvan tones of the green tea to create mouth-watering undertones that hint at hazelnuts and burnt caramel.
