Menghai tea factory has released this Peacock series of single-estate tea mountains since 2001. They represent some of Menghai Tea Factory’s most sought after teas and are produced in very limited quantities. Mengsong Mountain Mengsong has one of the highest concentrations of ancient tea gardens in Menghai County. The Mengsong tea growing area lies at a high altitude. The tallest peak in Xishuangbanna, Huazhu Liangzi, is located near the tea growing area at an altitude of 2429 meters. It is known as the roof of Xishuangbanna. Mengsong benefits from its high altitude, heavy forest cover, and often misty weather. It is truly a case of “high, misty mountains produce fine tea.” Mengsong area tea has a unique flavor and strong aroma. Mengsong Peacock tea is a 400g fresh Pu-erh cake. The buds and leaves are large and fleshy. The leaves have a thick, but soft, character. The tender buds are a yellowish green. They possess a high amount of fine fuzz. They are highly tender and have a glossy appearance. The flavor is sweet, mellow, and refreshing. The fragrance is clean, pure, and long-lasting. It has a unique and strong appeal.

Guoyan (Yunnan Sourcing)Almost done with the Peacock series. One left, after this one. I do believe this is probably the best in the series. Still, I consider it only above average. It opens with a strong orchid and fresh mushroom aroma that subsides into the cup. The first steeps are delightfully sweet and thick, but the middle steeps can be easily over-brewed to produce an astringency that strips any and all saliva off the tongue, making your mouth feel like sand. It lightens up in the later steeps, but empties out quickly. There is some “orangeness” to this tea that makes it a little tame, but otherwise, I think it’s an above-average Menghai sheng.

I got 10 grams off the cake (sorry grand-daughter I will get you another) into the “new” yixing I was gifted with from a great teafriend.
I gave a quick rinse and started brewing. This is a bit textured and complex. Notes are smoky, tannic, camphor,bitter and a touch salty. It has a nice full feeling in the mouth. A bit of sweetness rolls around the back of the tongue.
I am for sure a fan of Bada and Menghai mountain teas but I think my love of Mengsong is coming along. I have had some good Mengsong teas lately and am trying to expand into new territory. A nice golden hue on this one. It may be a bit too “smoky” for some but I think it has developed nicely. I look forward to trying this a bit down the road.

Sounds good although for some reason I associate camphor flavor with ripe tea, Merry Christmas everyone.
Aren’t there several teas in that series, it seems to me that I have a “Peacock of something” tea.
