Grown in the northern WuYi mountains of China’s Fujian province, this oolong is a unique find. Its leaves are robust and twisted with a high aroma, typical for this special grade of tea. Min-Pei is light in character with a natural orchid-like flavor and produces a clear, bright amber cup color when brewed.

YUM YUM YUM! I was not expecting such a delicious oolong. I have a feeling that this tea could provide a lot of diversity in taste. Since I had such yummy results using boiling water with Samovar’s Wuyi Dark Roast, I went straight for the boiling water first. Apparently it was a good idea. I love it! I think the boiling water intensifies the roasted flavor. The liquor is dark amber. The taste is smooth and certainly robust…very flavorful for a dark oolong. The roasted notes are very prominent. I’m also picking up soba and a light sweetness like mild honey. There is also an earthy stoutness. I think if this tea was steeped at a lower temp and time, that it would yield a much different result. Milder and perhaps a little sweeter with heightened notes of orchid. I’ll have to play around with it. As it stands now, this is a power packed oolong…and great for breakfast.

The taste has a lot of character but it’s hard to describe. It’s certainly yummy. It’s Juicy but not really sweet but’s it’s not grassy, woodsy, or bitter. It’s smooth but has some kick to it. But it’s not peppery. I don’t really think it’s floral tasting either.
It’s almost like that guy in high school that was trying to be a rebel but deep down inside he was a big softy. The ‘good girls’ liked him and so did the ’not-so-good girls" and the guys wanted to BE him!?

This is a really nice basic roasted oolong. Great value for the price, and I could see this being a staple tea. Roasted flavor up front, but not offensive. Caramelized sweetness, orchid florals, and a touch of oak round out a tea which has perhaps a black plum fruitiness at its core. A great combination!
