From Mandala Tea

Nine Lotus green tea transports the drinker to Jiu Hua Shan (Nine Lotus Mountain in Anhui Province, China) where there is spectacular natural beauty with few roads and no air pollution. The area is visited by some tourists, but most of the residents are Buddhist monks who cultivate this very special tea amidst numerous temples at an altitude of nearly 3,500 feet. This tea brings me back to my visit to Jiu Hua Shan, tasting the sweet, moist air in my cup, hearing the mantras whispered by the tea-picking monks in my heart.

These needle-like leaves may be enjoyed gongfu style, with a tea tumbler, or a simple water glass. We find the brew exceptionally sweet and uplifting.

Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – February 2023 Tea #4 -A tea swap tea or gifted tea

I wanted to finish these leaves here from Kawaii433 before they got any older.  The last time I used only a teaspoon and a teaspoon just didn’t seem like enough at the time.  Today I used at least two teaspoons for a big mug. The flavor was better!  These long leaves taste almost like a Laoshan green, just not as strong.  Nutty, creamed corn, a bit vegetal, a bit like spring flowers somehow.  Definitely better with more leaves.  Not astringent or overdone at all.
Steep #1 // 2+ teaspoons for a big mug // 30 minutes after boiling // 1-2 minute steep
Steep #2 // 25 minutes after boiling // 2-3 minute steep

Nothing like the therapeutic soak of Chinese green tea leaves in a bowl of hot water.

Soothing, creamy much like soymilk with a forward sweetness balanced by fine grass astringency, fine sorrel acidity, fine wet granite minerality.  Hints of buffalo grass and leafy herbs.

The leaves float.  Good news is they’re edible.

I will be sure to order Nine Lotus from Mandala with my next order to bathe longer in these leaves’ calm.  Thank you yet again, Kawaii :)

Received a free sample of this and oh, yum!

Busy day on a chilly overcast day, so I’m drinking this grandpa style. I saved a little to do it gongfu next time. This is so good that I may just grandpa it again.

First impressions: The leaves are awesome looking, long and thin, vibrant green. The liquor is virtually clear with a light greenish-yellow tint. Very creamy mouthfeel, almost buttery, when sipping but has a crisp ending. Because I just used a little of the sample, so I can gongfu it later, it was perhaps more light than usual. Maybe with more of a sample, I’ll get more umami or vegetal taste. I did get a little of that but not much. It was just a calming, delicate fruity taste, a twinge of lemon and other fruity notes with lemongrass notes, with no bitterness, really low astringency and slightly naturally sweet throughout. Highly recommended.

Very smooth. Grassy notes. Slightly nutty. Slightly sweet. The wet leaf smells so good. Slight marine/seaweed in the smell but not in the taste.

Wowee, this green tea is GORGEOUS! You need to check out my photos Steepster readers!

Nine Lotus is delicate. It has a creamy texture yet crisp and clean. The notes are sweet grass, lemongrass, unripe crisp pear, kiwi and lemon curd. This tea is so beautiful and the leaves are almost perfect! Nine Lotus is also cultivated by Buddhist Monks, how cool is that?

Nice! Thank you. I’m really happy you’ve been enjoying this one. When I was on the mountain in 2012, I was pretty sure I could taste the sweet air there. Now, not on the mountain, I taste the air in the tea and I’m really happy about that.

Very pleasant light green tea. It lacks bitterness and produces a calming cup. Comes from the nine famous mountains in china, a place home to monks that pray all day. This is a meditative tea that would be wonderful to enjoy in nature.
