Purple tea is a naturally occurring variatal that grows wild in the mountainous areas of Yunnan around 1600-2000ft altitude. This ‘Ye Sheng’ Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze var. assamica originates from Northwest Dehong County in Yunnan. Being wild and naturally pest repellent means no intervention has come before the tea trees and leafs to create this tea!
The taste isn’t bitter as such, more of a slight bubbly tonic water constancy that leads to a thin line of astringency at the finish…interesting! The wild nature of this cultivar transmits to a hard to define ‘wild taste’ that is intriguing. Slightly woody, smoky, herbal. A strong energy can be felt from the first cup and has great aging potential.
