Walnut Orange Scone

This one is surprising, not overly so but just enough to make me want to have another cup; despite the artificial flavoring. Anyway, the dry smell doesn’t leave much to be desired. Smells to fake honestly. But liquid has some interesting notes. The more I drink it the less sure I am though. Now I’m starting to feel I don’t like it as much. Perhaps this is the type of tea that needs to be hot to be enjoyed. When it’s lukewarm the citrus comes out to much and somewhat ruins it for the rest of the flavors.

This had a pleasant orange flavour at the very beginning. The walnut and white tea flavours were very light and barely came through. I’m not sure if it was the inconsistency of ingredients due to the advent calendar packaging.

Though named after a scone, I couldn’t really detect any buttery flavours. As I sipped it throughout the morning, the orange flavour strongly reminded me of the satsuma scent from The Body Shop and I couldn’t have it any more.

Advent Calendar 2017, Day 10: Lovely, bright orange taste, with depths added with the baked good/walnut taste. Perfectly named, light and refreshing.

Tasted this in store and it was underwhelming. Sweet and orangey but the walnut severely lacked and I couldn’t get any scone-like note from this. The white base was also missing, essentially. Not terrible but the flavour profile was aimless and lacklustre.

Day 10 DavidsTea 24 Days of Tea advent calendar — Walnut Orange Scone. Interesting choice for today’s tea to be heavily nutty after Day 9 was also a very nutty tea. I think I would have preferred if they’d mixed it up a bit more and spaced these away from each other. But I’ll try to keep my feelings on the other from influencing my notes on this one.

As I’ve done with others from this advent calendar, I split the brew into two mugs & added milk to only one. The milk-less mug had a bit of a bitter aftertaste, but the milky version was much smoother, the bitterness was balanced out. So my recommendation is based on this addition. Without milk, I dunno if I’d serve this to anyone. And even with milk, you gotta like walnut for this tea to work, as it’s pretty notable. But anyone drinking a tea with walnut in the title who doesn’t like walnuts and blames the tea, well … you knew it was a snake when you picked it up.

The orange-ness is not as in your face as I thought it might be, it’s nicely balanced there: noticeable but not overpowering. I also kind of expected this tea to be quite sweet, but that was, pleasantly, not the case.

So, yes, I’m saying Recommended, but it’s a pretty mild, caveated one.

I know that I’m not the only one out there who is not a fan nutty teas, so I was really hesitant to try this one after smelling it. I was right to be worried. It has a very slight white tea and orange taste with a bit of spice followed by a TON of walnut and an bitter aftertaste. It’s definitely not to my liking unfortunately, but the name does sound delicious!

I picked up a small bit of this because I was concerned that it might be too tart, but I am pleasantly surprised that it isn’t. I actually really like this tea. I’m having it unsweetened and it’s pretty mild to me, but I am definitely picking up the walnut flavour. It’s this warm and nutty note at the end of the sip. The orange is definitely there, though not too overpowering, but it does become more dominant as the tea cools down. Same with the tartness. I do wish that the walnut was a little stronger. As far as the scone taste, I can sometimes taste it as a butter note, perhaps from the white tea base. I’m really happy that I gave it a try. I’m definitely going to get more.

I can definitely taste the orange in this tea and it blends quite nicely with the other ingredients as well-wouldn’t say it tastes like a scone though. Kinda leaves an unfavorable aftertaste in my mouth between sips and for this reason, I would not recommend this tea.

*Update: I tried it as an iced latte and it is a bit better but there is still that weird aftertaste going on. I can finish my drink, but am glad I no longer have any of this tea left in my stash.

First sip is pleasant, like tasting the light vanilla orange glaze on a scone (no scone/buttery flavor for me, but the vanilla frosting and orange zest is there), but the aftertaste is a lot of bitter orange peel and bitter rosehips for me, and I find that rather unpleasant. The flavor was light, even using double the amount of tea that I normally would.
On my second try of this, I found the orange peel to be too bitter again, and something tasted strangely dry and herbal.

So, this one is a white tea – something I’m always open to there being more of. I think it’s also my favourite, not just of the new teas but of the whole collection.

The smell of the dry leaf is really delicious, and I found myself constantly gravitating towards to wall tin of it while working today just to pop open the sniffer lid and get a good inhale. It smells like orange zest, and buttery, flaky pastry! Really intoxicating.

This is another one that I want to be able to latte, but that I can’t so that’s kind of disappointing. It’s a pretty big let down that 4/5 of this year’s winter teas are NOT latte friendly. If any time of the year is latte season, it’s winter – right!?

Steeped up this is glorious though! The orange is definitely the strongest flavour, but I like it a lot. It’s a lot like fresh grated orange zest, with a brightness to it in the cup and just enough sweetness. Mostly, I like that it’s a natural tasting orange zest and not something overly candied in nature. The walnut isn’t as strong as I expected it to be, but there is a sweet nuttiness to the undertones of this one that’s coming from the walnut. I wish it was a little stronger, but I’m not unhappy with how it reads. It’s light, but a solid compliment to the orange.

Maybe the most understated element of this blend is the ‘scone’ aspect though; there’s definitely a buttery element to this one flavour wise – more in the finish of the sip than anywhere else. That buttery quality is what really makes me think of scones, it’s a good touch! Apart from that, there are also light/gentle malt, straw, and lemon notes to this one flavour wise and the softest hint of apple.

It’s good! I totally got a small bag of this one, and I foresee it being a go to in store option for me this winter season, as well! I just really appreciate how smooth it was, overall.
