From DAVIDsTEA

Just dessert

What’s not to love about a red velvet cake? It’s chocolaty, it’s rich, and it’s bright red. We’re the first to admit it’s a pretty flashy dessert. If other cakes are birds of a feather, the red velvet is the peacock – which is exactly why we love it so much. And this sweet, lightly creamy black tea blend perfectly captures our favourite dessert. With semi-sweet and white chocolate chips, beetroot powder and little red sprinkles, it’s rich, delicious and a whole lot of fun.

Ingredients: Black tea, semi-sweet chocolate bits, white chocolate bits, beetroot powder, sprinkles, natural and artificial flavouring*.

Allergens: Soy and dairy

I was very excited about this tea. I love sweet teas, dessert teas, chocolate and cake. Sounds like it would be the perfect tea for me.
My expectations where not met in the way I was hoping. The tea has a wonderful smell, similar to the smell of melted butter, brown sugar and vanilla. The tea has a beautiful color too, a rich red.

When I first tasted it I was taken back for a moment, was it sweet? was it too sweet? was it bitter? Did I steep for too long or too short? I could not tell, so I took another sip. I was enjoying what I was tasting, but felt it was lacking something. I tasted caramel, vanilla, almost like a browned butter and brown sugar too. What I did not taste was chocolate or any creaminess.

I would recommend this tea even if you do not enjoy red velvet cake, or chocolate. It could be too sweet for some but I enjoy sweet teas.

I will definitely enjoying experimenting with making this tea to a latte or perhaps adding chocolate milk.

Got this in a 24 Days of Tea Christmas package and was surprised to like it quite a bit. It’s sweet, but not overpoweringly so. I might get it again in the future.

I love this, have hoarded a few big tins of it, and don’t understand why it’s not a permanent flavor. It tastes just like rich chocolate cake with buttery, white chocolate frosting. One of my favorite dessert teas (if not my #1 favorite)…

I like that I don’t have to add anything to this tea, but the candy it contains is basically already a sweetener. The taste is just average. I am not a fan of the artificial ingredients.

I love it so much and I’ve been drinking this for consecutive days and everytime I tried to drink 2 cups of it in one day I usually gets a headache :( but the tea is great though.

I had it again but steeped it less, also added a little cream and it tasted so good! I feel this is a favourite for me and am SO glad I have 100 grams of it or else I would have finished it all by now. Bumping my rating from a 55 to a 95.

Looks like you are new here. Welcome!
Cutting down the length of time you steep helps alleviate too strong of a flavor. If you leave tea to steep for too long it can result in a bitter cup. I usually steep for 3 minutes for blacks I haven’t tried before and adjust from there. Reading other reviewers steeping parameters for teas can help you figure out how to adjust for a particular tea.

Ashley

Thanks Dustin! I’ll try that for sure next time, I steeped it for 6 minutes so that’s probably why. I appreciate the advice, it’ll probably help a lot :)

Is it just me or does David’s have a tendency to make a lot of their cake teas very similar? I’ve had both Coffee Cake and Birthday cake before and it’s kind of interesting just how similar this one is to both of them. Perhaps I should be more mindful of my smelling to take note of the subtle differences.

Overall, this tea smells well, like cake? I’m not entirely sure what a red velvet cake is supposed to smell like in particular but its good at least. Even though the leaf was like 2 years ago it kept a lot of its flavor which is surprising, in a good way. I find that it tastes a lot like it smells, like cake. I don’t really taste the black tea base and its not as full-bodied as I would like but I think its something I’ll pick up again sometime when I have room in my tea cupboard.

Last night, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I’ve had a 50 g bag of this tea for months that has been slowly emptying and finally used all of it up. I also revoked my tea latte virginity card and had my very first tea latte using this tea. May I say, it was amazing. I drank the entire cup in less than a minute which was a huge improvement from having to work at it to drink this tea if I made it plain. This doesn’t taste anything like red velvet to me, however. It has a strong chocolate flavour but its missing the raspberry to call it red velvet. I don’t think I will buy this tea again, but I am very glad it made my first latte experience a good one.

HELLO YOU SWEET ENCHANTMENT-SPUN CONFECTION.

This ridiculously tasty sweet tea was made by sugar-dusted, giggling elves. Their shoes are always upturned. Their smiles are permanent upon their faces. It’s kind of creepy, actually.

Their glistening chocolate mansion is ensconced in a forest that’s magical in the worst possible way. There are centaurs out there with flaming bow-and-arrow sets. And Voldemort eating unicorns.

Your best bet is to stay in the moonlit tea-mixing factory, listening to Aqua CDs on repeat.

What I’m trying to say is, this is tasty.

Came across this today and had to have it straight up and lightly steeped. Yum! Today, it tastes like DTs’ Birthday Cake on a black tea base.

It is what it is and sometimes that is just fine.
