From Canton Tea Co

Ye Sheng Wild White Tea
Other names:Wild White

This is a glorious, limited edition tea with a great story. This tea farm was once owned by the government but had been abandoned for many years and the tea bushes were left to grow wild. Our producer recognised the potential in the farm, the natural tea bushes, the excellent terroir and particularly the yellowy, rocky soil – perfect for giving the tea a delicious mineral note. He bought up the estate and produced this great tea from the first, small harvest of all the tea bushes that had been left untouched, in a natural state for decades.

We are the only people in the UK (and probably anywhere outside China) to have this tea. It is an ideal all-day, summer tea, very soft on the palate with a creamy depth and a satisfying full-bodied, warm fruity note, lifted by the mildest hint of flint (from that excellent ground).

First…I want to say…when I first read this description all I could think of was “oh…so this is the REBEL of the White Tea World, eh?” Well, “BRING IT ON”…Rebels are COOL! Almost like the Danny Zuko or Kenickie from Grease!

Anyhow…this is really REALLY Fab!

It kind of had an astringent yet fruity smell to it but there was a little hay-like aroma going on there too!

The taste is VERY vibrant for a white! It’s creamy but a little juicy and semi fruity at the beginning of the sip but finishes more buttered veggie-like. There is a delicious aftertaste that lingers, too!

Wonderful! Memorable! I really like this!

I’m going to go listen to Billy Idol now…

This brews up to the most beautiful color… so light, almost like alabaster!

This is really nice. Pleasant sweet flavor and it feels very soft on the palate. Almost creamy. The flavor is delicate at first, but develops into a stronger flavor as I near the bottom of the cup.

An excellent white tea … thank you to TeaEqualsBliss for sending me some!

I had this in April, and I officially call that month “Ye Sheng” Month – simply for the fact that I tried three different teas from that wonderfully odd varietal of tea leaf. This white tea is wildharvested from an abandoned government farm, and the leaves yield the most exquisite, lemony notes of any white I’ve ever had. Didn’t think Silver Needle could be trumped…but it was…and hard.

5g / 200ml water from kunzan tetsubin in a banko-yaki pot.
Two infusions.

First impression is very much like a high grade silver needle. But the leaf look more like a mao-cha, curly and twisted. The tea is matured from 2008.
Taste is like that of a good silver needle. maybe a bit sharper. Very full taste, with a long fresh aftertaste. Aftertaste reminds me of a lemony black tea. A darjeeling perhaps. VERY nice!

Will have to look around for more matured silver needle.

I have just finished off an old sample of this that I inherited from my mother. I think it must be a couple of years old now, but it was still a lovely, fruity tea with notes of hay and apples. The texture is creamy and it is quite relaxing, which is just what I need right now.

I only have a small sample of this tea, as it is extremely expensive, and unavailable in anything but samples at the time. It is an interesting tea, with robust flavour for a white tea, and it does diverge slightly from the usual white tea palate of cucumber/hay/barley/wheat to a more oolong-ie palate of fruit, minerals, and creamy greens. It is also not as light bodied as white teas usually are. If you really love white tea, then you probably won’t rate this tea among your favourite whites. I love white tea, and Norbu’s Ya Bao is still ranked as my favourite (yes, I have tasted Verdant’s Ya Bao and I don’t like it as much), with Tea Palace’s Bai Mu Dan second, and this tea is ranked with Verdant’s Ya Bao as “an interesting white when I’m looking for a more aggressive flavour”. For me, white teas are soft, soothing, a relaxing way to end the evening in mellow sweetness. Both this Ye Sheng Wild White and Verdant’s Ya Ba have a rough edge to them that makes them more interesting, but also makes them fit to fill my white tea cravings. If you are not a white tea person, and you think that white tea is bland – this is the tea for you.

The aromas of this white tea’s dry leaves are quite sweet and grassy. Fuzzy, short, white twists intermix with small green leaves for an enjoyable looking tea. Canton Tea Co’s packaging suggests using 2 teaspoons of leaf per cup of water and infusing the tea for 2-3 minutes. Accordingly, 2 teaspoons of the tiny leaves went into my cup for a little over 2 minutes. The resulting aroma of this tea was somewhat different than the dry leaves suggested.

My cup of tea still maintained its grassy aromas, yet felt deeper and stronger with a light, roasted smell. I was further surprised when, upon tasting it for the first time, the flavour burst in my mouth, both sweet and fruity and without a lot of the formerly smelled grassiness. Impressed by the full flavour, I continue drinking.

This is one complex white tea…the flavour is not, in any way, straightforward. Slightly reminiscent of half a dozen different white teas, this is a must-try for white tea lovers. On my personal enjoyment scale, I would give it a 91/100.

First of all i need to say that this is my first white tea.

The Color of the tea is a pale yellow, I really like it.
The smell is really sweet, both before and after brewing; I think it is the best quality of this tea.
The taste starts really creamy, and ends smooth, leaving the mouth with a wonderful aftertaste.

In conclusion this is one of the best tea I have ever tasted.
